Castleford House nursing home is an attractive Victorian building, set in an idyllic location, near Chepstow. The interior boasts large rooms, high ceilings, massive fireplaces, all lovingly and sympathetically refurbished.

Castleford House offers stylish and comfortable accommodation for residents. There's a mixture of single and double rooms and the majority are ensuite, with a terrace or views onto gardens. Inside the house, residents enjoy bright and airy lounges as well as a smaller sitting room/library for quiet reading.

A rich schedule of organised activities gives residents the opportunity to participate in favourite pastimes, learn new skills, venture outdoors and keep their minds and bodies fit and alert.

There is a passenger lift and all areas are accessible for wheel-chairs. The gardens are available to residents and visitors at all times and offer views over the Wye Valley.

My father moved into Castleford after being in hospital.
We visited a few different nursing homes to get a feel and Castleford stood out. The feel of the place, the beautiful gardens even had chickens walking around. One thing that stood out was the number of people walking around not confined to chairs.
The staff were friendly. Dad had Lewy body dementia, he was allowed to walk around. He loved to get involved with the music therapy sessions. Was allowed to dance and sing.
They get families involved where you can eat with your loved one in a lovely dining room with a good choice of food, you can join in with activities.
I would recommend without a doubt Castleford.

Overall I am very happy with Mum's care at Castleford. And the staff do a tremendous job to keep the residents happy and stimulated. Mum seems content and happy at Castleford. Her personal care is good she is always clean and dressed appropriately. The staff are friendly and helpful and treat the residents
with respect and dignity. The meals are nutritious and presented well, with thought to residents personal dietary needs. I am impressed with the number of different activities which are on offer weekly which also include seasonal festivals, and also with the staff's efforts to get the residents involved in them, each to their own ability.

The Castleford team have made mum's transition into the home as easy as possible for us. All our requests and concerns have been listened to and although there is inevitably some loss of communication variation in attitude between staff, generally everyone has been enthusiastic in supporting our needs.
I've been particularly impressed with the manager's knowledge of what is happening at a person-centred level, on the ground.

Always plenty of staff available. Clean surroundings. Pleasant gardens if only they could get the resident outside in the fresh air more only a few is not enough. Played music is too quiet most are hard of hearing. More care should be taken in dressing in the morning wrong clothes and thermals in the
Summer.

Without exception, we have found the whole team ay Castleford communicate very well, they all come across as sincere, polite, supportive and caring. Their response time for emergency care is quite remarkable as it is with more mundane duties alarms etc. Apart from the above mentioned all the staff act
in a respectful professional manner. Castleford is certainly going places.

Mum has been with Castleford in Tutshill for a nearly a year. A year ago, I couldn't have imagined feeling as comfortable with her situation and reassured about her care and wellbeing as I do now. I and she are really fortunate to have a member of my family or a friend visit her every day. We have
been reassured by the care and professionalism shown every day by the Castleford carers, nursing team and managers. They genuinely care for mum, as they do all their residents. They get the basics right; mum is well fed, sensitively cared for and attended to. I see it in how well mum looks, in how she interacts with each member of the care team, in how settled she seems (on the Facetime clips of her singing) when we are not with her. Alongside the vital basics, Castleford management and carers think of new ways to gently engage and bring variety and flavour to the lives of their residents, I feel mum is in safe hands and would recommend Castleford in Tutshill.

We wanted to take mum out for a Christmas treat so cooked an afternoon tea for her and all the family at a hotel near Castleford. One of the nurses made sure he had all the details and made arrangements for the van to be available and a carer to accompany us. The resident's activity coordinator sent
me an email because a friend of mum's from New Zealand had sent her a Christmas card and the activity coordinator wanted to know more about the lady so they could talk to mum about it and return a card. Both staff put extra care into their work.

The staff were exceedingly helpful and considerate to both our needs and our friend with dementia. For me it was particularly difficult as I lived a considerable distance away and could only travel to the home infrequently. All arrangements were put in hand by the manager who was particularly helpful.
The staff we spoke to were well informed about my friends needs during the time she was there.

Try to spend 2/3 days (2 1/2 hrs) during week. Beautiful well kept gardens and grounds with adequate seating to sit or walk in gardens. Display of flowers the best I have ever seen. Well kept reception rooms. Plenty of room for residents to walk about if they want to.

I have no hesitation in recommending this care home to anyone who is looking for a home for a loved one. My godmother had previously been in a care home in the East Midlands for 3 years. It had good reviews but Castleford is a world apart in terms of kindness, care, good management and joy.


It is

a wonderful place to visit and to know that your loved one is so well cared for.

Due to her rapid decline in dementia, Castleford House arranged for Mum's transfer from her previous residential care home.
They have been kind and helpful during a deeply stressful period. We have been deeply impressed with the knowledge all members of staff seem to have about residents on a day to
day basis and how they communicate that to us.
It is very reassuring and we are grateful.

I've had a varied and exciting nursing career, working as a cosmetic treatment nurse for the Harley Medical Group and, before that, staff nurse roles in Chepstow Community Hospital and the Manchester Infirmary Clinic. I became a nurse because a friend of mine applied to nursing college. However, I found that I enjoy caring for people, trying to give them the best care/life possible.


I consider myself to be a good listener, able to provide support and I am not judgemental. I enjoy meeting and getting to know people I care for, making them smile or having a laugh. I like knowing that their loved ones are happy with the care they are receiving.


In my opinion, Castleford House achieving overall Outstanding is the home's best achievement. I believe that I played my part in that, helping develop the home into a forward-thinking environment with more modern standards of care. I celebrate success at home with a meal or takeaway, or treat myself to a shopping spree! At Castleford I like to ensure that everyone knows that they are an important part of any success the home has.


I find that going for a run or walk helps with my mental health. I also cope with stress by writing a list of things that I need to do and prioritising what needs to be done first.


Castleford House and Milkwood Care are very supportive and flexible. The company are keen for the team to achieve further qualifications.

I previously worked as a heavy plant operator, a JCB driver, a boarding manager at Lafarge Plasterboard and was then manager at Critchcraft Tiles.


One of my favourite things about my role is seeing people smile after a job is done. I find that this role is different to the other jobs I've had, it's a bit of a challenge for me. I think the ability to learn and fix a variety of tasks, many being quite challenging, is one of my strengths.


I think that one of Castleford House's biggest achievements is getting the overall "Outstanding" CQC rating. When I'm stressed I tend to go clay pigeon shooting or blame the wife (and then buy her some flowers afterwards).


At Castleford there's always help at hand if you need it. Being part of the team allows me to achieve so many things in my role.

Amelia Pace

Joined: 2014

I started in social care as a care assistant at Gibraltar Care Village in 2013, moving to Castleford House in 2014. I became a senior carer in 2016 and then swapped onto lifestyles in 2018, initially working as a lifestyles coordinator and senior carer, and then I became a full-time lifestyles coordinator. In 2021, I became "Head of Lifestyles".


I consider myself to be innovative and creative, have excellent communication skills, am able to plan and have great people skills. I am able to think and work outside the box and strive to achieve outstanding standards. I wanted to work as a lifestyles coordinator because I believe that, with my unique skill set, I can make a difference to people's lives and improve the quality of it through meaningful stimulation and person-centred activities.


My best achievements at Castleford House include:
1. Going "viral" on social media
2. The home achieving an overall "Outstanding" CQC rating
3. Winning "Activities Team of the Year 2021" at the Caring UK Awards.
4. Helping people who experience dementia defy limitations


I celebrate success in style! We have ceremonies and display our achievements, including everyone helping and encouraging others to learn from us. When I experience stress, I try to break down my issues into smaller pieces and look to problem solve. I'm not afraid to ask for help and I am aware that I need to prioritise my mental health.


The team at Castleford House really helps me achieve my career and personal goals - there is ongoing support and we are an extended family.
