Castleford House nursing home is an attractive Victorian building, set in an idyllic location, near Chepstow. The interior boasts large rooms, high ceilings, massive fireplaces, all lovingly and sympathetically refurbished.

Castleford House offers stylish and comfortable accommodation for residents. There's a mixture of single and double rooms and the majority are ensuite, with a terrace or views onto gardens. Inside the house, residents enjoy bright and airy lounges as well as a smaller sitting room/library for quiet reading.

A rich schedule of organised activities gives residents the opportunity to participate in favourite pastimes, learn new skills, venture outdoors and keep their minds and bodies fit and alert.

There is a passenger lift and all areas are accessible for wheel-chairs. The gardens are available to residents and visitors at all times and offer views over the Wye Valley.

Castleford House has recently been redecorated internally, giving it a bright, fresh look.
The staff respect the residents' dignity, treating them with kindness and patience.
The meals are nutritious and well presented.
Management willingly provide updates on the well being of the resident, on request
from their family members living far away, for which we are very grateful!

My father has been at Castleford House for eighteen months and the staff there are always caring, helpful and supportive. We do no visit dad on a specific day or time, however, when we arrive each time he is still receiving the same care and attention so we know he is being given the same level of care
24 hours a day. Castleford House organises various activities indoors and outside during the years. We have attended this year a dog show, the Summer Fate and we are looking forward to the Halloween/Bonfire night in November. They have taken him out on numerous trips to the park for tea and cakes and even the seaside. We would confidentially recommend Castleford, it's staff and management.

Would like to see more activity rather than people sitting in chairs all day. Exercise is essential especially people with dementia. A physio department is needed. There seems to be only one at hospital. Castleford is a great place. Staff very kind and caring. Very professional.

Dad has been at Castleford for over a year.


He is happy (as much as we can tell), he is always dressed smart, clean and comfortable. We visit often even if we find the visits hard. Staff are always on hand to help.

My husband is looked after very well. He is always in a lot of pain and can have extra morphine on a bad day. This is not always noticed by staff that he is in more pain. The staff are very kind though. He can go to the toilet himself but not clean himself properly so I find him with horrid dirty nails
and sometimes poo on his hands. I don't know what can be done as they don't always know when he has been.

Mum has been cared for at Castleford House for four years. She has been well looked after and staff have been kind to her. Home is kept clean and tidy and we are made welcome when visiting Mum. Sometimes I feel it is a little understaffed so can get very busy then but on the whole, it's all good. I
think mum gets a bit bored at times as she is still alert although wheelchair bound. But the activities lady is very good and does her best for the residents.

My husband went into Castleford House last October and settled in very well. The staff have connected with him, and they are all very kind and willing to do anything for him. He is always tidy and seems to be happy there. Good activity staff who interact with patients very well.

The care my mother received whilst at Castleford was always of a very high standard. The week leading up to her death was above and beyond the normal. The staff were excellent to all the family and treated us with compassion, whilst still retaining their professionalism and this made the situation more
bearable. Mum was treated with dignity right until her last breath and we will be eternally grateful.

My mother has been in the care home for approximately 3 years. She has always received excellent care and has been happy and content in the environment. The staff work so hard and are always friendly, approachable and helpful. They are so dedicated and caring and make life so much better for the residents.
As far as I am concerned, my mother could not be in a better place at this moment in time.

Grounds and environment were excellent. staff very friendly, nothing is too much trouble. Engaged with my husband a lot, didn't seem unhappy. Staff a little careless on how my husband was handled, bad cut on back of hand. Electric shaver went missing but the manager paid me for that straight away with
apologies.
All in all, we were most happy with my husband's care. Perhaps if nit picking I would say a little more entertainment interaction.

Just thought I would do an update on my previous review which was over two years ago. I am pleased to report that my 94 year old Mother is still happily receiving such good care at Castleford. Indeed she hardly seems to have deteriorated much at all. She is happy and very well cared for and we are
so grateful to the staff as it has been such an emotional journey as she suffers from vascular dementia. I cannot recommend them highly enough or thank them enough for looking after my mother so well.

In October 2014 we were told that my Mother needed both nursing and dementia care. We looked at many homes. Some of them were depressing, some not too clean, some were obviously over crowded and in some the staff simply did not give us confidence. After much searching we found Castleford House. What
a joy and how different to so many of the others we had seen. Mum had a lovely private room on the ground floor with her own en suite. The interior of the home is pleasant and was always clean and fresh. Gardens are lovely. Castleford has - in my opinion - an excellent team of nursing staff, carers, domestic and maintenance staff. All friendly and helpful. Sometimes they took Mum on trips in their bus. She particularly liked going to the seaside. Mum always looked clean and tidy and we were confident that she received the very best of care during her time there and that she was safe. Mum was there for 16 months before she passed away.

I would like to thank all of the staff at Castleford so much for the help and support to all of our family and the fantastic care that they take of my mum. She is always clean & tidy as well as her room being immaculate whenever any of us call in to see mum, which is always on spec and never prearranged.
We have struggled with mum's diagnosis and illness as a family but we all know that she is safe, well and feels comfortable an cared for.


I can't thank the management and team enough for what they do on a daily basis!

My Mum has been living at Castleford for 6 years during which time her condition has deteriorated considerably (as expected) even thought she is quite young. The staff at Castleford have always taken fantastic care of her even when she has been a little uncooperative. Whenever I come to visit, Mum is
clean and tidy and her room and bed are always spotless. Mum used to like to wander about a lot and the staff were always very accommodating of this even though I'm sure it made things a bit more tricky for them. They would allow her to sit with them and even help with things if she wanted to. All her medical needs have been taken care of and Mum is shown a lot of affection and care. The team members don't change often which is very helpful for someone with Alzheimer's who gets easily confused. I have every confidence that when anything happens to Mum (she has a slight fall or doesn't fell well) somebody will let me know straight away. The very distressing situation of Mum's illness has been made very much better by knowing that she is getting the best possible care. I am always made to feel very welcome when I come to visit and the team have always been very kind to us as a family. I can't recommend the Manager and her team highly enough.

I've had a varied and exciting nursing career, working as a cosmetic treatment nurse for the Harley Medical Group and, before that, staff nurse roles in Chepstow Community Hospital and the Manchester Infirmary Clinic. I became a nurse because a friend of mine applied to nursing college. However, I found that I enjoy caring for people, trying to give them the best care/life possible.


I consider myself to be a good listener, able to provide support and I am not judgemental. I enjoy meeting and getting to know people I care for, making them smile or having a laugh. I like knowing that their loved ones are happy with the care they are receiving.


In my opinion, Castleford House achieving overall Outstanding is the home's best achievement. I believe that I played my part in that, helping develop the home into a forward-thinking environment with more modern standards of care. I celebrate success at home with a meal or takeaway, or treat myself to a shopping spree! At Castleford I like to ensure that everyone knows that they are an important part of any success the home has.


I find that going for a run or walk helps with my mental health. I also cope with stress by writing a list of things that I need to do and prioritising what needs to be done first.


Castleford House and Milkwood Care are very supportive and flexible. The company are keen for the team to achieve further qualifications.

I previously worked as a heavy plant operator, a JCB driver, a boarding manager at Lafarge Plasterboard and was then manager at Critchcraft Tiles.


One of my favourite things about my role is seeing people smile after a job is done. I find that this role is different to the other jobs I've had, it's a bit of a challenge for me. I think the ability to learn and fix a variety of tasks, many being quite challenging, is one of my strengths.


I think that one of Castleford House's biggest achievements is getting the overall "Outstanding" CQC rating. When I'm stressed I tend to go clay pigeon shooting or blame the wife (and then buy her some flowers afterwards).


At Castleford there's always help at hand if you need it. Being part of the team allows me to achieve so many things in my role.

I started in social care as a care assistant at Gibraltar Care Village in 2013, moving to Castleford House in 2014. I became a senior carer in 2016 and then swapped onto lifestyles in 2018, initially working as a lifestyles coordinator and senior carer, and then I became a full-time lifestyles coordinator. In 2021, I became "Head of Lifestyles".


I consider myself to be innovative and creative, have excellent communication skills, am able to plan and have great people skills. I am able to think and work outside the box and strive to achieve outstanding standards. I wanted to work as a lifestyles coordinator because I believe that, with my unique skill set, I can make a difference to people's lives and improve the quality of it through meaningful stimulation and person-centred activities.


My best achievements at Castleford House include:
1. Going "viral" on social media
2. The home achieving an overall "Outstanding" CQC rating
3. Winning "Activities Team of the Year 2021" at the Caring UK Awards.
4. Helping people who experience dementia defy limitations


I celebrate success in style! We have ceremonies and display our achievements, including everyone helping and encouraging others to learn from us. When I experience stress, I try to break down my issues into smaller pieces and look to problem solve. I'm not afraid to ask for help and I am aware that I need to prioritise my mental health.


The team at Castleford House really helps me achieve my career and personal goals - there is ongoing support and we are an extended family.
