  • The Coombs, Coleford
The Coombs offers up to 36 residents compassionate, individualised residential, nursing and respite care. Originally built as a private residence in 1856, The Coombs was renovated 100 years later.

Situated close to Coleford town centre in the beautiful Forest of Dean, the home is surrounded by large, pleasant gardens and is adjacent to the Coombs Park Estate.

Offering a mix of different accommodation, this warm and friendly home has rooms in the original Grade II-listed main house and in the specially designed single storey lodges that have subsequently been added. Cosy lounges are available to relax in, as is the garden on sunny days and social activities take place daily for your enjoyment.

If however, you'd like a little more privacy, then your own bedroom offers a peaceful oasis. To give you the support you need when you need it, a friendly, professionally trained team are on hand around-the-clock to support you in how you wish to spend your day enabling you to continue to enjoy a fulfilling and independent lifestyle.

A dedicated Activities Coordinator organises a varied programme of events around each individual's requests, hobbies and interests. The team will be delighted to assist you to continue with existing pastimes, as well as give you the opportunity to try something new if you would like to. They make sure everyone is able to enjoy themselves to the fullest, be that with arts and crafts, a coffee morning or more individual pursuits.

Visits from outside entertainers happen regularly. The home has access to a Trust minibus for trips out.

A talented cook and kitchen team prepare tasty, home-cooked meals. The freshly prepared, delicious dishes are carefully balanced to get the best nutritional value and take into account individual dietary requirements and preferences. I visited the home in July 2017, pending my aunt's discharge from hospital and instantly got a very warm comfortable feeling about the facilities (the pod system lends itself perfectly to a communal atmosphere), surroundings and most importantly the staff and level of care they would deliver. This feeling
was only further backed up when on a somewhat stressful hospital discharge, the manager took control of the entire situation in a very professional and extremely considerate manner.
I cannot fault the level of care given to my aunt through her declining health and her last weeks before her passing. A genuine warmth, compassion and love is shown from the whole care team to the residents and visitors alike. It is a happy place.
In summing up, there are no individuals amongst the care team at The Coombs, every member carried the same ethos which obviously comes from the leadership of the home manager who is excellent. For me, The Coombs provides "excellent care wrapped in a big warm hug".

When we knew that my Mother would require residential care, I was anxious to find her a bed at The Coombs because over decades I have been impressed by the quality of care I have seen to be offered there. I was not disappointed during the period from October 2017 to her peaceful death earlier this month.
The critical issue for me is the standard of care offered by the carers and medical and other staff within the home and my wife and I have been more than satisfied with everything we have seen and experienced during this time. Under great pressure from demanding patients with complex needs and personality issues arising from illness or from one of a number of particular conditions I saw great sympathy, support and help offered on a regular basis by many Carers who do a difficult job with good humour and consistency.

Nice friendly home with caring staff. Although an old building, it was clean and tidy. The food looked appetising and the staff are really kind and considerate.

My mother has been in The Coombs for two weeks now. The care and attention she receives is first class. All staff are wonderful. She is happy and comfortable and pain-free. She has improved greatly in last two weeks and I believe this is because of the excellent care and attention she has received.
I would highly recommend The Coombs to others. I speak on behalf of the rest of the family and we would like to express our thanks to all staff for making our mother happy and comfortable as she nears the end of her life.

I base my review on the fact that my mum is settled, well cared for and happier than she has been for many years. She tells me almost every day about the lovely food and the kindness of the staff. As a frequent visitor, I feel valued and most welcome at all times. I have only two negative points to
make.
The garden area outside the room needs to be tidied and planted for a pleasant outlook.
Activities for residents are only arranged 4 of 7 days as the coordinator is part time.

We went to The Coombs because it was recommended now we know why. It was exemplary. The manager pulled out all the stops to assess my mother-in-law on the ward. The home continues to communicate frequently with facilitating discharge. At the Coombs, the care was excellent, they were kind, patient, professional
and my mother-in-law's health improved to the extent she wanted to go home.
The staff were again so supportive, communicating with GP, pharmacy and social services. Throughout, their communication and care, was more than excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend The Coombs.

When my friend first moved into The Coombs, she was very dispirited and disinterested in everything. Within a very short time, I could see the difference in her - she began to care about her physical appearance, took an interest in other residents and developed a strong relationship with the staff.
The encouragement she has had, including learning to use a powered wheelchair for the first time, has resulted in her looking and sounding much more lively. I am delighted every time I visit her - and I can only put her present good health, improved appearance and involvement in residents' well-being, down to the wonderful staff and facilities.

The Coombs provided kind and supportive care for my mum during her respite. I was impressed with the willingness of all the staff to accommodate mum's wishes and let her choose what she did and didn't want, could or couldn't do. The house has a lovely atmosphere and the rooms are as homely as possible.
Mum said they listened too me and didn't just treat me like a silly old lady. I think that says it all.

My Step father arrived at the Coombs on the 15/02/16. first Impressions are very important. The Manager is in this job because of her kind, caring and wonderful compassion she shows, this is immediately obvious. We were so I pressed by her kindness and then could see what a fabulous team she had, even
hand picked it would seem by how super they all are. He has had a rough time but so far has settled well and been so well looked after and comfortable. To us as a family the Manager and her team have been superb. So far everything has been so perfect we are in shock, I am sure with what we have seen this will continue. The home is beautiful and the residents are so friendly too, you can see how happy they are to be here. Well done, so far one very amazing place!!!!

My mother has now been in The Coombs for 2 years. She is very deaf and completely blind, her mental capacity is much less now but when she asks where she is and I say "The Coombs!" she has said "I like that". She knows she is cared for and well looked after and recently asked me to thank everyone for
looking after her so well. All the staff are gentle, kind and respectful. It really does feel like a family and I am so grateful. The home is "super clean" with no smells. It is well decorated and the grounds well kept. Parking is sometimes a bit difficult but that is a very minor problem!.

The Coombs was the first care home I visited when looking for a suitable place for my 96 year old cousin. I knew immediately there was no need to look any further - the manager and all the staff I met were so welcoming and friendly, and there was a calm and loving atmosphere.
My cousin went into Holly
Lodge and is so happy there. All the rooms are light and airy - it is as good as being at home.
His bedroom is a good size, well equipped and always very clean and tidy. The staff are all so caring and attentive to his needs and he really enjoys their company. The food is of a high standard with a good variety each day. I, also, have had great support from the manager and all the staff too - the best care home I have ever visited over a number of years.

The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and we felt that my partner was well looked after and they tried to make the food appetizing. Due to his limited mobility the manager changed his room to make him much more comfortable to enable him to see more. From the moment we stepped through
the door we felt a caring and loving atmosphere where people really cared about the individual. Special thanks has to go to the carers who were there in his last moments and many others who cared for him a big thank you for their compassion and love.

Choosing a nursing home for dad was a daunting task. A soon as we walked through the door at The Coombs we were reassured he would be well cared for. The staff are wonderful; dad received the best of care and they are so supportive to relatives too. Dad's cat was even able to visit his room. The Coombs
is bright, airy and well decorated and maintained. Overall very pleasant. It is a real home from home. Dad wasn't able to join in with the arranged activities but the "All about me" booklet was an excellent tool for conversation. We even learned a few new things too!

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.625)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.625) out of 10 for The Coombs is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.6 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 5.000 for The Coombs is calculated as follows: ( (36 Excellents x 5) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 5

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.625 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Coombs is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.375

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
