Excellent care given to my dad in the 18 months he was in The Firs. When he was near the end, the staff kept me informed at each stage and was very helpful when the end came.

My sister is unable to carry on a 'normal' conversation so I can only base my comments on her appearance and the standard of her room which is always clean and tidy. In other words, I am entirely satisfied with her present situation.

We as a family have been very satisfied with the care and support my great aunt has received, she always looks clean and tidy and she seems happy and well cared for - we can't ask for much else.

My mother is being very well cared for at The Firs Nursing Home and she is very happy there. The staff are very friendly, kind and gentle towards her. They ensure her needs are looked after, as well as fully supporting her to achieve her own independence as much as is possible. They are keeping her
safe and well and happy. They have been great in helping us with any administration tasks too. There is a very comprehensive and well-delivered programme of activities which help stimulate my mother, both mentally and physically. We get regular feedback on Mum’s activities including lots of photos which are lovely to see and to share with friends and wider family.
The Firs has helped my mother to keep connected with us by helping her to use Skype and we are now able to share in her life through our regular communication this way.
It is great to see my Mum looking so well physically and really enjoying life and the good company of the staff and residents.

I have been involved in helping residents since my mother moved in, in September 2007. She died in March 2011. For the last 12 years I have provided musical memories via an iPhone at least twice a month (285 times to date for 2 hours). I have introduced myself to 3 residents in The Firs, other than
my mother. My experience in dealing with the staff is very positive, with a very caring attitude and patience.

I am finding we are having an awful lot of problems with different aspects of my husband's care - I feel that the communication between myself and management is very difficult and I feel as though I am getting nowhere with getting any answers.

Carers have difficulties due to understaffing and don't

have the time to spend with residents.

The new Manager has been like a breath of fresh air. The Manager is professional, approachable and always cheerful. A situation has occurred but I was listened to and have confidence that my concerns will be acted upon. As a relative, this is most reassuring.

The care staff are so lovely and kind. My Aunt is very happy, in fact, I have not seen her so happy in years. The Manager and his admin are always there to help with a smile on their faces.

I need to thank the manager of the Firs for showing myself and my family around. When we visited we were unsure of the best place for Mum in her last few weeks, but when we met the manager, he took all our concerns and talked them through. The Firs is very homely and is under-going decoration but it
only took us 10 minutes as a family to pick The Firs for Mum. She was there 2 weeks and I can't thank the staff enough. I know mum was happy there.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.099)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.099) out of 10 for The Firs Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.299 for The Firs Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (59 Excellents x 5) + (47 Goods x 4) + (21 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 127 Ratings = 4.299

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Firs Care Centre is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
