The Orchards Care Home, a purpose-built setting situated in the popular residential area of Shard End, east of Birmingham, provides personalised nursing and nursing dementia care to older people.

With welcoming sitting rooms, spacious dining areas and en suite bedrooms, the home has been designed and furnished to offer residents a true home from home. The on site salon and cinema provide the opportunity to relax and enjoy a favourite film, whilst for green-fingered residents, the courtyard garden is the perfect space to flex those gardening skills and reap the rewards of their hard work.

With a focus on personalised care and support, the team at The Orchards design life around residents, getting to know each person so that they can offer a lifestyle that's as engaging as it is relaxing. Lovely, caring staff. Mom is well looked after which pleases me. The food choice is excellent. Staff always take their time to talk to you and give updates on resident. Glad my mom is at this care home.

Whilst visiting a friend yesterday, the emergency alarm went off and the staff were very professional in dealing with it and maintaining residents' privacy and dignity as I passed their room. Staff also have treated my friend with the utmost respect and dignity.

When visiting the home, I feel a nice sense of warmth and calmness. The environment is bright and welcoming. The staff are polite, helpful and hard-working, they seem happy in the workplace, they care and go above and beyond to help. The management is approachable and friendly and I can speak to them
about any problems that may occur and feel satisfied with the solution. My sister is treated with dignity and respect which makes us as a family very happy. I very much feel part of The Orchards family.

My Grandmother was referred here to receive end-of-life care instead of spending her final days in the hospital, and the care home was amazing, they treated her with care and respect at all times and were always there to help us during the difficult time. The care home is clean, safe and generally beautiful,
the staff were excellent and made a difficult situation easier. Thank you for looking after our relative during her final days and ensuring she died with dignity and in no pain

From the minute Mum arrived with you she was respected, listened to, and certainly well cared for. The detail you required before she came, and on checking in, showed how keen you were to meet Mum's every need. The staff were always professional, respectful and listened carefully to Mum, making sure
she always felt in control. All the staff got to know Mum very quickly, making time to talk to her and listen carefully to her likes and dislikes. We were all very impressed by the relationships staff quickly developed with Mum, and having got to know her ensured her care was personalised to her needs. As a family, we felt very welcome and included. Staff were always friendly and approachable, and everyone, including cleaners, the laundry and kitchen staff knew Mum, and always had a cheery welcome for us. Knowing Mum was being well cared for, in a safe environment these last few months was a reassuring gift. We can’t thank you enough for all you did for Mum.

Beautiful care home with welcoming and compassionate staff. The room in which my grandfather was staying in for the duration of his visit had excellent facilities and made him feel comfortable throughout. I was also offered full use of the in-home salon so that I could cut my grandfather's hair. It
was also nice to be able to sit in the gardens whilst visiting, during which time we were offered hot drinks by the staff. The finish of the home is of a high quality with fascinating historical photographs throughout. A final thank you to the staff for all that they did.

Absolutely wonderful home! The manager and staff are beautiful people, who could not have done more to make my grandad feel at home during his stay. They excelled themselves and our expectations of care. My grandad returned home after his two weeks' stay like a new man. He thoroughly enjoyed his stay
there and cannot praise the staff enough. He has made some lovely new friends which he can’t wait to meet again on his next visit. I would like to give a huge thank you to every member of The Orchards for making this experience the best we could have wished for - for my grandad, but also my family, as we were able to rest easy, knowing that he was in the best hands.

My mom came to The Orchards from Good Hope hospital, as we felt for her own safety she needed 24-hour care. It has been only a temporary placement as we had secured a place elsewhere, but I have to say I cannot fault this home. My mom has thrived, she has gained weight, she looks the best she has looked
in months and it’s down to the love and care shown to my mom by the staff. I can’t stress enough what lovely caring people who work so hard and can’t do enough, they are an absolute asset to HC One. They genuinely care and are so friendly - nothing is too much trouble. If we hadn’t secured a place elsewhere, which is nearer to our home, I would keep her there without any hesitation. So to all your lovely staff, a massive thank you to you all. You’ve taken away so many worries and anxieties I had about my mom for the first time in years, I haven’t had to worry about her and she has been really happy and absolutely loves all the carers who look after her. You all deserve a pay rise.

My mum was placed in your care by our local hospital and the love and care shown by everyone we met reflected on just how much they give the people they care for. Mums car was above and beyond the call of duty and the warmness shown to us was equal to that too. When mum passed away they were so supportive
and considerate was outstanding and very family orientated. Nothing is too much trouble for them a great team and a great care home too.

As my mum needs to be helped with food at times, her tray, bib and clothes get dirty with food and are not cleaned regularly. (Mainly her tray.)

It was my Aunty's 100th Birthday this May and the staff did their utmost to make it a special day, within the covid guidelines. All the staff were engaged with the event and decorated the dining area and courtyard for the occasion. The chef baked a fabulous cake and we celebrated in style. Aunty had
a lovely day, nothing was too much trouble and it is good to know that my dear Aunty is in a lovely caring environment. Thank you to all the staff team for looking after her.

Introducing Simon Barnett
Home Manager at The Orchards, Birmingham


What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?


“For me, kind care is going above and beyond for all Residents and listening to their individual needs.”


As a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Simon has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. He is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards in care and quality of life for Residents


Having joined The Orchards as Home Manager, Simon closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for and every Resident. He extends this caring approach to his Colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


He also works hard to arrange events and activities with nearby nurseries, schools and clubs and is always keen to include the local community in life at The Orchards.


When asked what he enjoys most about his role, Simon remarked:


“It means the world to me to see a smile on a Resident’s face, making them happy and helping to enhance their lives is the best feeling.”


Outside of work, Simon enjoys spending quality time with his friends and family, especially as he has seven siblings and 18 nieces and nephews. He also enjoys travelling abroad regularly and seeing new places.
