The Orchards Care Home, a purpose-built setting situated in the popular residential area of Shard End, east of Birmingham, provides personalised nursing and nursing dementia care to older people.

With welcoming sitting rooms, spacious dining areas and en suite bedrooms, the home has been designed and furnished to offer residents a true home from home. The on site salon and cinema provide the opportunity to relax and enjoy a favourite film, whilst for green-fingered residents, the courtyard garden is the perfect space to flex those gardening skills and reap the rewards of their hard work.

With a focus on personalised care and support, the team at The Orchards design life around residents, getting to know each person so that they can offer a lifestyle that's as engaging as it is relaxing. When our mom was told she was going to a care home I was very worried, but I needn't have been, everyone was so kind and helpful.
With all the help from the physio's and the carers Mom soon was able to return to her own home.
I would recommend The Orchards care home to anyone.

All the staff from the doctor, nurses, carers, physio, cleaning staff and office staff made my mothers stay as comfortable as possible. They were all cheerful and very helpful. Even when they were very busy, they made time to ensure moms rehabilitation went as well as possible.

Female personal care was provided by a male without consent. Often left in bed until 10.00 and only got up when the family arrived. Would wait ages to take her to the toilet. Weekends, we would have to wait ages before staff let us in. Poor staffing levels. I could write a book of disasters.

On admission to the home, all of our residents are offered the choice of either female or male carers to attend their personal care needs; this is noted and evidenced within their individual care plans.
Residents are also offered the choice of times they wish to be woken each day, this is recorded in the care notes and reviewed daily as the resident's choices may change depending on their mood.
The home continues to monitor staffing levels within the home, dependent on residents identified needs and we staff the home accordingly to ensure kind care and that the individual resident’s needs of care are met daily.
During some busy periods of the day and in the absence of our Administrator in the reception area, there may be delays in staff responding to the front door access bell. For security purposes, we do require a member of staff to respond to visitors wishing to gain entry and delays may occur when staff within the home are providing care to our residents, although we endeavour to respond as quickly as possible. The Home Manager operates an open-door policy and is always happy to meet with any residents or relatives who may experience issues of concern so that they can be immediately rectified.

The facilities there were excellent. The support staff and all the medical staff were truly remarkable. My mum, coming from having been in bed for 10 weeks, with the help she had all the way through, I couldn't fault them.

Very pleasant experience for me and more importantly for my sister who is 95 years old and has been a resident for six months. Everything very clean and rooms and corridors are well presented. Loved the period pictures in the corridors. Staff very pleasant. My sister seems to be very happy and contented.

Liquid soap dispenser in en-suite not working. Toilet continuously blocked. Taps in en-suite need replacing. All staff are amazing! so friendly, helpful and professional at all times!

My sister came to the Orchards care home after breaking he ankle. From the beginning the staff have been bright upbeat and friendly while helping and caring for her. My sister is vegetarian and they have done everything they can to accommodate this. She has been encouraged to have contact with other
residents and her visitors are welcomed. Everything is spotlessly clean. The Orchards is very well organised with interesting activities for the residents.

Introducing Simon Barnett
Home Manager at The Orchards, Birmingham


What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?


“For me, kind care is going above and beyond for all Residents and listening to their individual needs.”


As a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Simon has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. He is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards in care and quality of life for Residents


Having joined The Orchards as Home Manager, Simon closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for and every Resident. He extends this caring approach to his Colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


He also works hard to arrange events and activities with nearby nurseries, schools and clubs and is always keen to include the local community in life at The Orchards.


When asked what he enjoys most about his role, Simon remarked:


“It means the world to me to see a smile on a Resident’s face, making them happy and helping to enhance their lives is the best feeling.”


Outside of work, Simon enjoys spending quality time with his friends and family, especially as he has seven siblings and 18 nieces and nephews. He also enjoys travelling abroad regularly and seeing new places.
