My husband passed away on 3rd November. His care was excellent. The nurses and staff were kind, loving and considerate in every way. I shall always remember the Gables and would highly recommend them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. With love and best wishes.

I have been extremely pleased with the care my husband has received at The Gables. He seems much more relaxed and cheerful. He obviously trusts and feels comfortable with the carers who are always encouraging and are quick to meet his needs.
The management at the home have been very helpful and supportive
not just to my husband but to all the family and have helped me through a difficult time.

Care is good some of the staff are brilliant. Just wish the rest of them would talk more with the residents then they would learn what the residents need by their signs, needs more individual awareness and understanding.

My father was taken to The Gables from the hospital for a two-week assessment on 21/06/23 - 08/07/23. He left in an ambulance suffering from a severe chest infection, a kidney and urine infection and conjunctivitis. He could walk, wash and toilet himself before being taken into social services care.
Now he can do none of these things. The Gables did not care at all for my father he was dirty and unkept as was his room. There were 3 days when he did not even have bedding on his bed but an old sofa cushion for a pillow and a throw. This awful place is in need of an unannounced inspection. I will be taking legal advice! I have photographic evidence and messages for the family.

Reply from Jess Hetherington, Manager at The Gables Nursing Home

We are sorry to receive this review. When your father arrived with us, he was able to walk, and toilet himself, with prompting and support, however he also had significant behaviours which impacted his ability to be fully independent. He was placed on our complex dementia unit. He was supported and assessed throughout his stay. Unfortunately, his dementia related behaviours posed a significant risk to himself, his environment, and others. It is difficult to accept that a loved one can present with behaviours which are challenging, but we endeavour to work with relatives, to support them through these difficult times. It is a shame that the opportunity to discuss your concerns while your father was placed at the Gables, were not explored. We ensure that the environment is kept clean and hygienic. We do not restrict peoples access to their bedrooms and the nature of complex dementia means that personal items can get moved. On discharge he was still mobile and was able to toilet himself.

My brother has been a resident at The Gables Nursing Home for about three years now. He loves it there. All of the staff genuinely seem to care for him, I wish I had known before, when he was in a previous home, what caring, nurturing and encouraging looks like. This isn't just a home, it's his home
and when we visit we always feel so welcomed and at home ourselves. I can't speak highly enough of the team there, I would mention a few but there are too many to mention individually as they are all wonderful.

In August this year, my husband was transferred to The Gables Nursing Home from a previous care home, the treatment and care he is getting at The Gables are excellent, second to none. The nurses are 100% dedicated to the residents. Excellent carers, they couldn't be looked after any better. The home
is spotless and smells lovely, it's warm and comfortable. I have no worries whatsoever. He is comfortable and happy as he can be. He is 94 in June and has dementia so he needs that special care he is getting at The Gables.

The Gables Nursing Home is a fantastic care home. The staff are always so attentive and caring and I know my mom is well looked after and cared for. the management team are always available to respond to any concerns or queries and will always communicate any issues. In particular, five members of staff
are amazing at what they do but there are so many other staff I could mention but don't have room. Thank you all.

The Gables staff are always so friendly and welcoming. You can tell that they really care about all of the residents. They made a real effort for Nan to feel special on her birthday, decorating her room and bringing her a cake. They make sure that there are lots of lovely enriching activities to keep

Current Review Score: 9.0 (8.952)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (8.952) out of 10 for The Gables Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.301 for The Gables Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (66 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (8 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 103 Ratings = 4.301

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.651 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Gables Nursing Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 47 registered maximum number of service users is 9.4. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.4 = 0.851

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
