My nan has been at Valley Court for 2 months now and she likes to refer to being here as being on holiday! She has a new lease of life and it’s nice to know how happy she is here. We don’t have to worry about her and all the staff are amazing! Always going above and beyond, they treat all the residents
like family. There is always a story for her to tell when we go to visit her. Couldn’t recommend this care home enough.

Reply from Home Manager, Manager at Valley Court

We are really pleased with your positive feedback. We feel that we are one big happy family here and that is easy to see through the care we deliver. Our care home is a place where we share laughter and joy with our residents, and I am glad to hear that your nan has found a new lease of life. Thank you for your kind words.

Nan has been here a couple of months now. Lovely, caring, homely place that treats residents like their own family! Staff and management are thoughtful and on the ball. Activity coordinators are top-notch! After a bad experience elsewhere Valley Court is a breath of fresh air! Highly recommended!

My mum was in the care home and the staff did not do a very good job. My mom was not looked after well and it was very difficult to get anyone to help with my mum and it was not a good place to go to.

Reply from Jamie O'Connell, Staff at Valley Court

Really disappointed to read this review as we aim and strive to go the extra mile when caring for loved ones. We have looked back at the records when your mother left us to go to another care home more than 10 months ago and we did everything to accommodate and care for you and family members, from the kitchen staff, carers and activity team. It is hard when large families all have a singular idea of how care is delivered. but we give care based on individual needs and assessments from professionals and deliver this to our best abilities while making it person-centred. We are sorry you felt the need to leave this rating with no explanation for each point rated at 1 star. But rest assured we will continue to audit and check on all areas to make sure we are giving quality service and care.

My father went to Valley Court two months ago following a stay in hospital after being diagnosed with dementia, all the staff gave outstanding care to my dad and always found time to talk to myself, my mother and my brother. I really can't praise the staff enough. I would have absolutely no hesitation
in recommending Valley Court to anyone.

My father has been at Valley Court for just over two years. He recently turned 100 and, despite his health, the home enabled it to be a really lovely, memorable day. Nothing was too much trouble. All the people there are very caring and this is evident in the way he has been looked after and cared for.

In general, the staff were as helpful as they thought they could be. Unfortunately, I took my dad out for a few hours and came back to a dirty room, his breakfast plate and drinks were exactly where he had left them, bed sheets unchanged, nothing washed up.
Losing all items of clothing. No one seemed
to know what was going on, couldn’t tell me if he had had a shower or if he had been offered a shower and then declined. Slept in his clothes that he wore all day.
Excuses were made as to why he had no clothes, no PJs. I was told it’s the family’s job to label clothes, however, I don’t live in the same country so unclear how I was going to do that when this was my first visit. It’s very disappointing.

Reply from Care home manager, Care home manager at Valley Court

Thank you for your feedback. It’s disappointing to read this review, as you can see we generally receive feedback the opposite to this. The manner in which you found Dad's room is way below the standards we expect in our services, this has been addressed with the team that we’re on that particular day. I’m glad following this review you decided to come and raise your concerns with myself directly, this has allowed me to look further into your concerns and address these as I promised. As discussed, you witnessed Dad's refusal for care and support, Dad does have consent, however, the team should ensure all records of refusal are recorded, again this has been addressed with our team. Dad's care plan has now been reviewed with the information provided by yourself and hopefully, this will support the team to deliver the quality of care we aim to deliver each day. Apologies if you feel you were given excuses, as agreed our domestic team will label any clothes that require labelling.

My mother was admitted to Valley Court Care Home a few weeks ago. This was a concern for me as I had a very negative view on care homes. I am very pleased to say that this has now been proven to be completely incorrect.
Without exception, I have found all of the staff friendly, supportive and some
of the nicest people I have ever met. They are enthusiastic, caring and always exceed our expectations. I could write so many positive reviews on how I have found them and the care they provide to my mother, not to mention other residents. Also, It has to be said that I personally have had such fabulous support in helping me deal with the emotional impact of my mother's condition.
A significant highlight has to be that of the entertainment team, with support from other staff members, they have already provided us with such wonderful memories which have lifted our whole family at a time when we have felt so worried and concerned with such an amazing, positive impact on my mother!

I would like to express my thanks to the manager and her team for the care that her team gives to the resident in the home. My mother is well looked after. The home is spotlessly clean, and the staff are friendly. The food looks great. Nothing is too much trouble.
Thank you.

Our relative has been at Valley Court for approximately seven months. In that time, the staff have looked after the resident with good care and dignity. They attend to the needs of the residents and provide a welcome and friendly approach to any of our needs and requests for information. They also provide
activities and stimulation for the residents.

Reply from Home Manager, Manager at Valley Court

My mum was transferred to Valley Court in October 2021 with a terminal cancer diagnosis of 3 months, during Covid. As with many care homes, they had their trials and tribulations of Covid outbreaks and staff absence issues, but that did not detract from the care and dedication they provided for my mum
during her stay. Mum was as sharp as a razor and more than aware of her diagnosis, but the staff helped her navigate through her darkest hours with dignity and resolve. Mum was fortunate enough to spend the last few months of her life in the care of Valley Court, with the most caring of human beings anyone could wish for. From the nurses, carers, cooks and cleaners; every single one of them a ray of sunshine whom I am eternally indebted to. Thank you Valley Court.

I don't know where to start! Both my parents have lived at Valley Court. We searched around for what we hoped would be the best place for our parents to see out their lives. We stumbled across Valley Court. As soon as we entered Valley Court, we knew that this was the place for my parents, it felt like
home from home and boy we were right. I could name people, but all the staff at the home work as a team and it would be wrong to put someone above the other. All the team have shown compassion and love for both parents until the very end of their journey in this life. The food is all home-cooked, which counts for a lot with my parent's age group. The activities and providers of the activities are excellent. The family cannot thank everyone enough for the gift of care that has been bestowed on my parents. If anyone is looking for a safe haven for their loved ones, this is the place and long may it continue in these times. Thank you all again.

Valley Court is an excellent home. I give it an excellent name. The girls work hard and I'm treated like family everywhere I go. People ask me where mom is and I tell them. My friends say what an excellent home it is. My mother is 101 years old. She is treated with kindness and respect.

I can’t thank and continue to thank all the staff for looking after my dad. He has been in the home and bed-bound since his arrival in March 2020, but even though visiting has been difficult due to lockdowns etc, we are reassured and know he is very well looked after and the staff are very warm and
friendly.

My husband and I were familiar with this home for approximately ten years when we used to visit my husband's best friend's mum on a regular basis. She resided there for around 12 years until she died at the very good age of 99! Each time we visited, we were always made welcome by the staff and over
that period became familiar with the carers and nurses, whom we had no doubt really cared for the residents. Therefore, when my mum suffered a serious stroke almost three years ago and needed constant care, this home was our obvious choice for her. The staff are friendly and have shown great care, patience and compassion to her and allow me to relax in the knowledge that she is actually looked after more knowledgeably and professionally than I could do myself, and therefore I would have no hesitation in recommending the home, and all the lovely staff to anyone hoping to find a home for their loved one.

My Nan has settled in lovely, it has been a worrying time and such a reassurance that she has settled in. She knows the staff’s name and details about the staff. They take their time and talk to me about who my Nan is as a person. They treat her like they are their mum or grandparent. My Nan talks highly
of staff and how she is treated. She is informed of all her care and knows what she is doing. She is respected as a person. I am thankful she is in this care home. I am also thankful for the staff!

Our mom was at Valley Court for 16 days following discharge from hospital. The care she received was fantastic. The staff made her smile for the first time in 16 days when in hospital! They treated her with dignity, compassion and most importantly kindness. Nothing was too much trouble and at the end
of her life, gave us as a family that same kind of treatment. We will never be able to thank them enough.

My father has been a resident at Valley Court for several months.
I can not praise enough the care/attention he has received. Valley Court has afforded him a quality of life via devoted/caring nursing staff. Praise must also go to everyone at Valley Court from the admin department, cleaners to the
kitchen staff who have helped my father settle and welcomed our family.
I/my family appreciate you all, in particular, the nursing staff who have shown my father the utmost respect. Your attitude/application towards your work is an example.

My mother/mother in law passed away this morning after being at this home for the last couple of months. Our mother was looked after with such care and kindness from every member of staff. Her quality of life changed the day she moved here. Being able to play bingo, which years ago was her favourite
hobby, to having her nails painted for the first time in 96 years. The meals were always lovely and she was always looked after with dignity. Please thank all your staff for the brilliant job they are doing. Our family are so grateful. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 7.8 (7.759)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.8 (7.759) out of 10 for Valley Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.897 for Valley Court is calculated as follows: ( (47 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (14 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 78 Ratings = 3.897

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.862 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Valley Court is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 69 registered maximum number of service users is 13.8. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 13.8 = 0.362

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Meet the Team (12)

Liam

Liam Palmer

Job Title: Care Home Manager

Liam Palmer is the new Home Manager. Here since 2020, Liam has ran care homes and retirement villages for various groups as a manager, regional manager and consultant prior to joining Valley Court.. He believes that working with and serving older people is a privilege. He thinks care homes should be well run and good places to work and that if you don’t hear laughter from the team as you walk around, there must be something wrong!

He has an abiding interest in company culture, leadership, quality and customer service. He has apparently written a couple of books (which few have read).

Jamie

Jamie O’Connell

Job Title: Head Chef

I’m the Executive Chef (my posh new title!). I have been at Valley Court for 5 years and working in hospitality since I was 16. With my team of kitchen assistants., we work hard to provide nutritious and tasty food and drinks for our 60+residents. There is quite a lot to my role – planning the menu, dealing with suppliers, catering for individual preferences, pureed diets for those with swallowing difficulties. I know all the residents here and will regularly go and see them. We have a “resident of the day” process in place where they are asked about their individual preferences, checking they’re being catered for. I ensure they get to eat their favourite food and avoid what they don’t like. It is their home after all.

I see Valley Court as an extended family and I care about those here as I would my own. I see it as a privilege to get to know these lovely people and do my bit to try and make their life here as happy and fulfilled as possible. I’m working on a pilot with a speech and language therapist to help educate staff about how to support those with swallowing difficulties. I like projects and learning something new. Recently, I have been developing my skills with pureed diets – I managed to take a full English breakfast (popular with our residents) turn it into puree and put into the shapes of the original items. Residents loved it and I get many contacts from other homes asking how I do it (secret!).

What I especially enjoy is variety – for example we make birthday cakes fresh for each resident birthday and we go and sing to them with the cake and candles – the whole thing to make them feel valued. Unfortunately, Liam our home manager joins us who sadly can’t sing (don’t tell him!)

In my spare time, I do some work for helping promote singers and bands with marketing. I managed to get Paul Burrell (Princess Diana’s ex butler) to record a tribute to the home which was fun. I also help Liam with the social media.

The highpoint of my career at Valley Court was at Christmas 2020, singing “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby / David Bowie with Liam the Home Manager to residents in the nursing wing. I was Bing, Liam was David Bowie (he has the hair). Remember that..rum pum pum pum? It was funny..we went into various rooms and sang lots of times, we were experts by the end! Forget BGT!

Tina

Tina Davis

Job Title: Head of housekeeping

My role is Head of Housekeeping. I’ve worked in social care for 20 years, with 16 years as a senior carer across a couple of homes. I manage a team of 7 housekeepers, with responsibility to ensure the home is kept clean and fresh, with high levels of hygiene and safe infection control practices. I want the home to be a lovely and clean for the residents – it really makes a difference to live somewhere well managed. Residents deserve to live in a nice clean home – dignity is so important and that motivates me and my team to give our very best.

I’ve been with Valley Court for 4 years, 2 years as a housekeeper and 2 years as a Head of Department. The home is a friendly place to work, the residents are happy and well cared for – you can see that clearly. It’s good place to work- staff are happy, lots of laughing and singing. When I come in, I feel uplifted. The refurb has made the home more fresh and welcoming. Think it has given the staff a greater sense of pride in the home. I think this is important because it takes a team effort to manage the home and keep it nice.

I am an active supporter of Villa with my husband and go to all their matches which is one of my many interests!

Helen

Helen Baddams

Job Title: Activities Coordinator

Hi my name is Helen Baddams my role at valley court is Activities Coordinator working with Amanda – I cover the nursing residents upstairs, with facetime calls, 1 to 1’s, pampering and other activities. I’ve been here since 2010! Some of the residents within nursing are nursed in bed, so I make it a priority to ensure we get some time together. This means a lot to many of the residents here – I know them all from when they first joined us.

What I love about my job? The feeling that I have made a difference to some of the beautiful people living here, I find that really fulfilling. I enjoy working here – there is a good atmosphere. I get on with everyone, attend daily management meetings, we support each other. This is what I think running a care home well all about. In the last year, with a new manager, there have been many changes for the better – whether the new hair salon, or refurbishing the rooms – it all looks far nicer for the residents and their families. We’ve had lots of positive feedback. It’s a nicer place to work too.

I’m best friends with Amanda the other Activities Co-ordinator. We’ve known each other since we were 4! She likes to think she holds my hand and looks after me as she did then (it is really me looking after her!). It’s nice as we got on and we’re like family.

Amanda

Amanda Hayden

Job Title: Activities Coordinator

My role is Activities Co-ordinator. I’ve been here for 8 years, working with my friend Helen Baddams. We went to school together!

I work in the residential part of the home and we have fun! I arrange facetime calls, games, make a fuss of those who have their birthday. We like to really celebrate peoples birthdays here with painted banners, cards, and a specially made cake and the team will come and sing. The home manager comes but he can’t sing (don’t say I said that!)

I love everything about my job, seeing residents smiley faces, listening to their stories, keeping them connected with their family is so important. It doesn’t feel like work to me and we work as a team. I help the team where they need it and I get plenty of support from my colleagues.

For me, it’s a welcoming happy family feel here at the home. With the refurb, families and residents are really happy with what we’ve done – the environment is looking lovely.

Colleagues say I’m approachable and will always help and make time for people. Friends say I am slightly loopy. I wouldn’t disagree. Love Amanda x

Jeff

Jeff Turner

Job Title: Maintenance

My job is maintenance man – I oversee the maintenance of the building, previously a painter and decorator by trade. I also oversee the refurb which has been going on since last July. I work closely with the Home Manager to come up with new ideas for decorating and developing areas – they’ve all worked well because we share our ideas, respect each other. We have a laugh and do great work - how it should be.

I’ve been here for nearly 4 years. The people I work with make it for me, we have fun and we help each other. I’ve got 2 decorators helping me – they’re doing a fantastic job. We’re doing showrooms now. I am especially proud of the hair salon we made here – I love to show it to families, it’s really stunning and it brings joy to the residents here. There was a time during the lockdown where we had no visitors, we used the time to get a lot done. Now when families are able to return, they can’t believe how the home has improved – it looks much fresher and more modern. There’s more laughter here and it’s a really great place to work. I love talking to residents, showing them how we will redo their room – they love to be involved. We let them choose colours, paper, they like watching the work being done. Being part of it. It’s a pleasure to come to work and I work with some great colleagues.

We’re really lucky – we have some beautiful gardens here. The Home Manager has promised me a residents barbecue in summer – watch this space!

Job Title: medication trained carer

I’ve been at Valley Court for 8 years, in the care team on both the nursing and residential wings. I’ve worked in all areas of the home when help was needed including the kitchen (I can cook!) and the laundry and a time as a nursing assistant. To me, Valley Court is our own little family, I call it “Happy Valley.” This is my second family- I love working with older people, I have since I left school as a volunteer (a little while ago!). I like working with older people as I feel connected to them. I find it really rewarding.

I think the home is looking far better now, I really like the look of the hairdresser, the residents love the feeling of going to the hairdressers, it’s like they’re “being pampered”. It makes me happy to see them feel happy. I think the new manager Liam has some interesting ideas. This is the way we should treat older people - with that love and dignity that we’d want for ourselves.

Job Title: Care assistant

I started at Valley Court in 2006 – 15 years of service in July. Prior to that I worked in retail – at Peacocks and Owen and Owen in Wolverhampton. I’ve seen many changes in care – standards have got a lot higher – whilst there is more paperwork it is all about better care and better outcomes for people living here.

I am a manual handling trainer which I enjoy. I have always worked days, I enjoy the company of the residents and the home is like a 2nd family to me. I think effective teamwork is the most important thing to run a care home well, me and my colleagues work together really well. We trust each other.

We aim to give the best possible care to those that live here. I have always worked on the nursing wing – I have a passion around palliative care -ensuring we make those important final days.months or years count as much as possible. We get good support from our clinical lead and we’ve a great team of experienced nurses. This gives me confidence to do my role.

Job Title: Administration

I work as the Administrator – doing finance HR and related admin which I enjoy. I’ve been here since 2014, previously working in a large GP practice.

I’ve been working here long term with my colleague Lauren. Lauren is on maternity leave – much missed. We’ve been really lucky to have Sharon step in to help – she’s doing a great job. She was a senior carer before, knows a lot and we have fun too.

I feel it is important to provide a decent, accurate admin service to the owners and the staff. I pride myself on getting the details right. Whilst much of my work is detail orientated, I still get to enjoy a laugh and joke with my colleagues. Apparently, I am especially good at charades – this is a private joke!

We’ve implemented new systems for payroll, HR and accounts. This means much of my work to write in ledgers and manual spreadsheets has thankfully gone! I was hesitant about the system for payroll but actually it has worked really well, it is much easier now.

My secret ideal job is to a librarian! Me and Liam the Home Manager have a good joke about this. He has promised to buy me a librarian stamp for the books. I find this funny, he thinks it dull! He just doesn’t get it!

Job Title: Deputy manager

I’ve been at Valley Court for 12 years, progressing through senior carer to nursing assistant and more recently Deputy Manager (2019). I have always had a passion for caring for older people, since caring for my grandparents when I was young. I have worked in social care since then. I feel this is what I’m here to do, my purpose.

The home has a good reputation in the community having been here for over 20 years. It was run on a fairly traditional basis up until the new manager Liam took over in July 2020. Since then, he has brought in some new approaches around improving the experience for the resident focussed on developing teamwork. This has worked really well. Residents have enjoyed seeing the refurb take shape and being asked about which colour / or paper they want. We also make more of a fuss of them, by celebrating their birthdays with a homemade cake and candles and the team singing to them! Unfortunately, Liam joins us and can’t sing but I don’t have the heart to tell him! Thanks

It was tough when the families weren’t able to visit during the lockdown and it has been lovely for them to start visiting again. I see the residents, their families and our staff team as a 2nd family and that’s how it should be.

Job Title: Care Team Leader

I have been at VC for 3 years, starting as a carer, then moving up to senior carer and then late last year, I moved up to Care Team Leader (CTL). After school, I went into work in hospitality initially. I had wanted to work with children but then a role came up at Valley Court and I have been really to have opportunities to develop my career here with lots of support.

You can hear me laughing out loud most days I’m on – for me this about a sense of joy from providing good days for our residents – it really gives me a buzz when we make their day. It helps that we have a really nice and welcoming home environment, it doesn’t look or feel like a care home, more like an interesting home and I think the residents and staff appreciate that difference.

I was only a senior carer for a few months so to then move to up to CTL was a big step. I was nervous about it but I needn’t have been. I share an office with the deputy manager and she has been great and has really helped me grow into the role. My work really varies from being on the floor, to doing supervisions to quality audits, to ad-hoc projects for Liam to helping nurses with documentation. I enjoy learning about the service from different angles and seeing how it fits together. There is a lot more to it than I realised!

Job Title: Care assistant

After leaving College studying health and social care for 2 years, I became a childminder. I did this for 6 years and I loved it. I supported children from 6 months to 13 years old. However, I had always wanted to get into residential care, working with older people. Reports and feedback from school always said I was considerate, thinking of others more than myself. I felt this was the right career direction for me to go. A friend of mine at Valley Court told me about a role coming up and here I am nearly 3 years later!

I work days in the nursing wing. I love working with the residents – every day is different and its nice to have a good laugh with them, cheer them up and to make them physically comfortable. I have a very dry sense of humour (which most people get)! People tell me I am fundamentally kind – I’m just a teddy bear really!
