Summerdyne is a converted regency house for 27 residents just outside Bewdley town centre. As a smaller home, the team prides themselves on a homely, friendly and attentive environment. This can be seen in their whole set-up, from the food they provide through to the varied activities, from visits to the local pub, use of ipads to stay in contact with friends and family. Visitors are encouraged to come at any time, to provide input into the daily activities and the care plans, and are welcome at social events.

Long serving staff are proud of the excellent reputation for the professional care provided; the home was one of the first to achieve the Worcestershire dementia standard. Caters for nursing and dementia needs, and offer both palliative care and respite care.

We find the management always there to help with anything for us and Mom. The staff are friendly and helpful, nice to Mum, chat with her and make her laugh. They all go out of their way to be kind and caring. Mom is cared for and looked after in every way. We are all happy with her care and well-being.
She is always dressed nice and looking lovely. Every effort was made for her 100th birthday to make it a very special day for her and us. Home is spotless and food lovely. Cannot thank them enough. They all did a wonderful job with Covid. A big thank you; well done, everyone. We would recommend Summerdune to anyone.

I am reviewing the end of life care for my mother who passed during the covid outbreak.
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to be with my mum during the last few weeks of her life and on her passing. During this time, I gained a real understanding of the care my mum had received, and also,
of the experience of staff supporting relatives through the end of life stage. The staff were very attentive in picking up the signs that Mum was close to the end of life, and as soon as they detected any changes, they kept in contact with me and were able to answer and let me ask questions at each step of the way. This included what could be expected as a relative and also what was happening for Mum. Right to the end, the staff were attentive with Mum and paid attention to every detail, ensuring the quality of life and dignity. For instance, once Mum has lost her appetite for food, they were quick to try different drinks to keep her as hydrated as possible, and they found she loved ginger beer. During the last few days, I could ask staff questions and felt reassured about the experience they had in gaging changes in Mum's health as this is the first time of going through end of life with a loved one. During the last 24-hours, I was able to be with her and hold her hand, staff would regularly check on Mum and also if I wanted a drink or food. I felt I understood the level of care and attention Mum had received for the past two years of being in the home. As Mum passed, a nurse sat with me so I wasn't alone and knew exactly when to intervene and exactly what to say in such a life-changing moment. Two weeks after Mum had passed, I received a life book with pictures of a wide range of activities Mum had experienced during the last two years of her life. As I hadn't always been able to be at these, this is a precious memory and a reminder that quality of residents life and dignity is very important at any stage, and wonderful to know this is valued. This would be the main reason, as a relative, I would recommend Summerdne to others.

When Dad arrived at Summerdyne in early March it was a very sad and difficult time for him and our family and we had no idea at that point what the future would hold.
From the initial meetings, to Dad’s arrival from hospital, we felt confident he would be in good hands.
Our first impressions of Summerdyne
as a caring, compassionate and well-run setting proved to be right. COVID prevented us from visiting Dad shortly after his arrival, but communication from the home was always excellent and we felt confident he was being well cared for and kept safe.
Summerdyne has an excellent reputation locally and we can see why. Thanks to the patience, care and support Dad received, we have recently been able to bring him home - an emotional day for him, us and the staff who turned out to give him a lovely (socially distanced) send-off.
We will always be grateful to the manager and her wonderful team who work so hard and give so much to make Summerdyne the safe, warm welcoming place that it is.

Thank you Debbi for such a lovely review. It is very much appreciated by all of us at Summerdyne. We are all missing Dad but are so glad that we were able to help him to return to his home and garden that he loves so much. We wish you all the best and will be keeping in touch.

My uncle moved to Summerdyne Nursing Home in April 2020 during lockdown. Staff and residents have all been free of Covid-19 and I feel confident that the precautions the home takes keeps everyone safe.
My uncle spent a week's respite at the home in July last year and we were both impressed by the homely
and caring atmosphere, which is why he chose to move here when he could no longer cope at home. The staff are friendly and supportive; this has made such a difference to me because it has been a very stressful time. My uncle has settled well and feels well cared for. The garden is lovely and is a great place for him to watch the birds, squirrels and butterflies.

My mum receives excellent care and the staff treat her as one of the family. Sadly she is bed-bound and has dementia but she is wonderfully well cared for. I have had to enter 'don't know' for activities because sadly she is unable to participate, but the staff do try to include her as much as they
can given her situation. They recently sent me a 'hug' from my mum as we could not meet due to COVID-19. The home has remained clear of COVID at all times.

Reply from Paula Lees, Manager at Summerdyne Nursing Home

Thank you, Mark, for a lovely review it is very much appreciated by all the staff and I know that our wellbeing/activities will continue to engage with mum as she may not always participate but does respond to music and food positively and also hopefully we will continue to use the portal so you remain able to see mum in these strange and difficult times.

My husband and I are the only relatives of a resident at Summerdyne.
Summerdyne is made by the staff. We searched along time for a care home that we thought suited before moving our relative to the home.
The manager is brilliant with excellent communications.
All the staff are kind and caring.
Our relative moved in May 2019, and we have been very impressed with the standard of care and kindness the staff constantly provide.
One particular staff member is wonderful, dynamic, caring with an attitude rarely seen these days in the environment of her role.
I hope you make every effort to hold onto her as a key staff member.

My grandmother has been at Summerdyne for about two years and she loves every minute. The activities coordinator is fantastic, providing singers, exercise specialists and hairdressers. My grandmother has never been happier and is loved by all the careers just as if she was their own relative. The staff
work so hard to provide 24/7 outstanding care. The hairdresser is amazing as she put a smile back on my grandmother's face as she hasn't had a proper hair cut in over two years. The new manager is brilliant as she makes the effort to get to know everyone who walks in through the door and greets everyone with a smile and manners. Thank you to everyone at Summerdyne for providing the fabulous support and care for my grandmother.

Since bringing my brother down from Leeds to Summerdyne I have been extremely happy with the dedication of the staff who interact with him over and above their remit, also providing daily fun and interactive sessions.
The overall feeling of the home is comfortable, spotless, fresh and caring.

My mother has been at Summerdyne for a year and a half and the happiest I have seen her in a long time. The management is excellent and always happy to listen and resolve any problems. The staff are caring and go beyond to deliver care; nothing is ever too much bother. Most important for my mum is the
consistency of care and staffing. Keep up the great work!

Surroundings and care are excellent.
Staff are caring, competent and meet all needs.
Have some reservations regarding billing ie, claiming back overpayments could be dealt with more promptly and billing could be easier to understand.

Reply from Ruth Hanlon, Administrator at Summerdyne Nursing Home

Thank you for your comments, they have been noted.
Most residents who reside in a Nursing Home are entitled to Funded Nursing Care, which is paid directly to the Nursing Home from the council and is refunded back to the resident once received.
Unfortunately, this process can fluctuate in how soon the payment is received and can often arrive, but misses the next invoice run.
This process is out of our control and we can only apologise on behalf of the council.

The care my mother has had over the past 4 years has been excellent. There is a family atmosphere which is a great comfort to us as a family. This is not relevant now as my mother has advanced Alzheimer's but initially, when she was more able, we felt that communal space was a bit limited and particularly
quiet space but I appreciate this is difficult to resolve.

The staff at the home were all professional and completely competent in dealing with the care required for my mother. It was evident that her time in Summerdyne Nursing Home was the very best that it could be. The nursing staff were always very supportive of all members of my family when they visited.
We visited every day for 3 months and not once did we feel that we were a burden or in the way. I would highly recommend choosing this home for any relative as its cleanliness, professionalism and fantastic staff are rarely equalled.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.872)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.872) out of 10 for Summerdyne Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.972 for Summerdyne Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (104 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.972

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Summerdyne Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
