  • Summerdyne Nursing Home, Bewdley
Summerdyne is a converted regency house for 27 residents just outside Bewdley town centre. As a smaller home, the team prides themselves on a homely, friendly and attentive environment. This can be seen in their whole set-up, from the food they provide through to the varied activities, from visits to the local pub, use of ipads to stay in contact with friends and family. Visitors are encouraged to come at any time, to provide input into the daily activities and the care plans, and are welcome at social events.

Long serving staff are proud of the excellent reputation for the professional care provided; the home was one of the first to achieve the Worcestershire dementia standard. Caters for nursing and dementia needs, and offer both palliative care and respite care.

My review is that the care home is very clean and both management and staff are excellent, very friendly and helpful. The care home is more like a big happy family and everyone who works there are very friendly and helpful and give 110% they work very hard and are a credit to you. I know that when I
go home that my mom is safe and cared for and my mum has settled in well. So I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the hard work that you all do.

A very well run nursing home which provides outstanding person-centred care. The manager ensures a very homely atmosphere for the residents.

Sadly, my mum died suddenly but peacefully in July 2017 having lived very happily at Summerdyne Nursing Home for 2 years. Her end of life care was excellent.

The support and respect given to me and my family at such a difficult time was truly comforting which helped us come to terms with her sudden death and enabled us to start the grieving process.

My Mother spent 10 weeks at Summerdyne after falling at home, breaking her right arm and dislocating her left shoulder. She was very happy during her stay at the care home. It was difficult for her as she was unable to use her hands due to the fractures. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, she
was treated with the utmost respect and dignity during her stay.
All her outpatient appointments and transport were organised by the home.
Towards the end of her stay, the staff worked hard to help her rehabilitation to enable her to return to her own home.
Visitors were always made very welcome no matter what time they visited.
I cannot thank all the staff, both day and night staff, enough for the care and love they gave my Mum during her recovery.

When Mum came to Summerdyne for 2 weeks respite care we found the home to be full of life and warmth, with a very friendly feel to the place. Her room was lovely and homely, fresh, bright and airy. The carers were attentive and kind and the manager is a lovely lady. We were always welcomed as visitors
and offered tea/coffee. My brother even managed to get a meal there with Mum!

Also when we initially looked round care homes, we were able to randomly drop in (no appointment needed) and were given a coffee, a tour of the place and had a very informative chat with a lovely nurse who was extremely knowledgeable about dementia. When we left, although there's no denying Mum was glad to return home (there's no place like home!) she only had good things to say about her stay, and when the time comes for more respite we won't hesitate to use Summerdyne.

Summerdyne has a very homely atmosphere, the staff are always welcoming and helpful, always attending to residents' needs in a very caring way.

During periods of illness care has been taken to ensure adequate nourishment and hydration has been delivered, resulting in speedy recovery, along with medical

care of course.

I would like to say a big 'thank you' to all members of staff for the wonderful job that they do.

It is a huge relief to all the family that my mother in law is a resident at Summerdyne.

Wonderful staff, who treat all of the residents with care and patience. The manager Tula ensures that the home runs well with a firm professional manner but with a kind and considerate aspect to her staff and

residents.

The food is wonderful and varied. Activities are regular and plentiful, targeted at all of the residents.

The home is very clean and unlike a lot of homes we have looked at, does not suffer the same unpleasant smells, attributed to the cleaning staff who work so hard.

Any issues are dealt with promptly, although since my mother in law has been resident at Summerdyne (18 months ) they have been too few to mention.

Excellent and loving care for my dying father. He passed away well cared for and peacefully. Staff also very good with my incontinent mother when she visited him. Regularly saw the same staff and was kept informed about his condition. A stark contrast to his treatment under the NHS.

Searched 'far and wide' for this care home for my cousin, who suffered a devastating stroke at the age of 62 years, resulting in total disability and blindness. She has been very happy and contented at Summerdyne for 6 years, despite her condition. The management is superb. Staff appointments are
made with the greatest of care. TLC is second to none - from all members of staff, alongside an excellent standard of medical expertise and attention to every detail regarding the residents' welfare.

The nursing home is all we could have wished for under the sad circumstances. The staff have all been both welcoming and friendly, most importantly they inspire confidence that the patients are treated kindly and with dignity. The room occupied by our mother is bright, clean and tastefully decorated
and we are struck by the cleanliness of the entire place- there are no unsavoury odours. We feel very fortunate to have been able to secure a room at Summerdyne for palliative care.

My mum came to Summerdyne in November 2014 as she was suffering from dementia. During her time at the nursing home she received the best care from a team of very dedicated staff. In June 2015 my father also came to Summerdyne for long term care and again I found the home to be so supportive as it was
an extremely difficult time for us all as a family. Sadly mum passed away in December 2015 and again the staff excelled in all aspects of their care for mum and my family, especially my father. I visit my father every day and always feel welcome in the home and part of one big family. This is a wonderful nursing home and I feel extremely fortunate that my parents have been able to live here; and to be loved and cared for every day by an amazing team of people.

Reply from Tuula Page, Manager at Summerdyne Nursing Home

Summerdyne staff consider it a privilege to provide homely care for our residents who we consider as our extended family. It is very important to us that the families and friends of the residents feel supported and helping to achieve a good quality of life that they all deserve.

We were very nervous about Dad going into a nursing home. You do hear some awful stories. However, I am confident that my Father is living in a very clean (it doesn't smell of urine), caring, supportive, encouraging atmosphere.

The staff are genuinely lovely. The entertainment is good and my Dad

has even joined an outside singing club which he wouldn't of done prior to going in.

The manual handling trainer has got him moving far more than he was at home so he is more independent; she is firm but kind with a big helping of humour.

Our family has now got their lives back, Mum is relaxed and the pressure is off me a little.

I went to have a delicious lunch with Dad today - just let them know you're going and pay £2.50 for delicious home cooked food, sourced from local suppliers.

We couldn't be happier and neither could Dad, in fact he regularly tells me he doesn't want to go home.

When you have to put a person i.e a loved one into the care of others and that same person has loved and cared for you, it is one of life's hardest decisions. When we found Summerdyne we were immediately impressed with the cleanliness and homely feeling that it gave us. After 18 months of Summerdyne
experience we can thoroughly endorse our original feelings. The dedicated care that my nearly 100 year old mother receives is at a standard that I would be happy to wish for myself when my time comes.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.872)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.872) out of 10 for Summerdyne Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.972 for Summerdyne Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (104 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.972

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Summerdyne Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
