  • Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home, Leek
Abbey Court Nursing and Care Home was purpose built in 1995 to offer safe, comfortable and homely surroundings to residents receiving both nursing and lifestyle care. The home is still doing that 29 years on, and supports residents and their families with all manner of physical, mental and lifestyle challenges.

With ensuite rooms available, private gardens and a quiet secluded location in the traditional Staffordshire Moorlands town of Leek, Abbey Court also offers a warm homely environment, as welcoming as popping round the neighbours... The door is always open to visitors, the kettle's always on, there's always a fresh biscuit in the tin!

Abbey Court has undergone a further partial refurbishment in 2018, with a new reception area being created and redecoration of lounges - part of the ongoing commitment to ensuring that the facilities are exactly what the residents and their loved ones need and expect.

A varying menu of fresh home cooked food is available 24 hours a day, and an enthusiastic activity and lifestyle programme and a passionate and dedicated staff team, some of whom have worked there for over 20 years, makes Abbey Court a unique and truly person centred home from home.

Abbey Court is also proudly accredited by The Gold Standards Framework.

Visitors wishing to explore and experience for themselves are always welcome - no appointment is necessary.

My uncle sadly spent only a short time in Abbey Court, however, during that time the care he received was consistently of a high standard. Members of staff were compassionate, responsive to care needs, observant of and proactive regarding changes in my uncle's demeanour, including medication to ease
his pain. He was kept clean, tidy and well shaven and his dignity was maintained. A special thanks to a staff nurse for her care of my uncle and our family.

Reply from Mandy Leadbetter, Home Manager at Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home

We really appreciate the feedback given and will share this with the team. We strive to give excellent standards of care to all, if we can make the final days as peaceful as possible for residents and their families then staff are rewarded. Thank you again for the lovely comments.

What can we say apart from the whole experience at the nursing home was excellent in every sense. From the first time you enter the unit to the end. Very caring and professional and exceptional nursing care. Thank you for everything.

Reply from Mandy Leadbetter, Home Manager at Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home

It's great to receive this feedback, great moral booster for the staff. We all do our best, not always getting it right but we do strive for excellence in everything we do. I'm very proud of the team. Thank you.

I have great respect for the staff and the care they give... some are better than others.
The issues I have are
1) Items of clothing go missing even though they have the room number on. Items that obviously require ironing are not ironed and I take my mother-in-law's laundry home to iron! White items
very often come back tinged with other colours so obviously whites are not washed separately. 4 hand-knitted cardigans have been totally destroyed due to not being washed with care.
2) I have been asking since 2020 for her room to be decorated and refurbished... it was and still is a very shabby room.

Reply from Mandy Leadbetter, Home Manager at Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I will pass your kind words to the staff. I too have utmost respect for them and the care they provide is invaluable to us and to the residents. I have raised your concerns regarding ironing with the housekeeping team to ensure this is addressed. We have also begun the process of updating the bedroom and this is underway as we speak, we look forward to hearing your feedback on the refurbishment once complete.

The overall atmosphere in the care home appears to have deteriorated since Mum (who has been a resident for approximately twenty-two months) arrived. The staff appear to have less time to spend with the residents. This is particularly noticeable in the area of social interaction with residents like
sing songs. I feel that is detrimental to the overall health of the residents. Changes from a catering part of view, I believe have been negative. Although the food might be nutritious the appearance is very unappealing.

I would like to thank you all for the care of our dad and grandad. End-of-life care was excellent. So comfortable and clean, excellent. The staff treated him like family. At the very end, you all gave him dignity and peace. You will be thanked forever by all our family. I recommend anyone with an elderly
relative who needs the care to place them here, your mind will be at peace.

Reply from Adam Knights, Managing Director at Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home

Thank you for your kind words, it will be forwarded to the team. We take pride in our work so it's lovely to see excellent feedback like this. Best wishes to the family.

My mum has been a resident at Abbey Court for four months now after hospital admission. I am delighted that she has settled well and have no regrets about her move. She is always well dressed with her hair and make-up done well, which is very important to her. Mum loves the entertainment, particularly
anything to do with singing and dancing (lots of it provided). There is always somebody on hand to deal with any concerns that we as a family have, and the staff always respond positively. More than happy that Mum is here.

Handled the Covid-19 pandemic extremely well, was able to visit following the rules. Any issues with laundry were raised and dealt with. Nan is getting the care she requires.
Difficult for Nan not in her own home, but we were made to feel welcome. Only improvement is next spring, the outside needs
to be cleaned and tidied up - perhaps flowers/plants.

I have found most of the staff to be friendly and caring and the home very clean. My friend gives a different insight. I know that they have struggled with her dietary needs. She buys her own soup! I have been in her room when a particular carer was on duty and heard her say something under her breath,
re my friend, which I assume she didn't think I heard, which I didn't think was very professional.

I am more than happy with the care my mother is being given at Abbey Court.
During the imposed restrictions Abbey Court did all they could to facilitate my visits and since the easing of these, they have gone out of their way to enable me to have longer visits. These longer visits, as well as a packed
lunch which Abbey Court provide, if necessary, enable me to take her for several hours on picnic trips around the Leek countryside. As my mother cannot get about easily without assistance the staff are always there to gently help her into and out of the car.
The staff are always friendly and treat my mother with care and respect. Living outside the country as I do, they are always there to assist my mother, allowing her to talk to me when I ring and arranging video calls.

My mum is now in her 7th year at Abbey Court and my dad was there for 3 years before he sadly passed away. My parents have both been happy here and very well cared for. Abbey Court is a very clean and well-managed care home. Staff are always friendly and welcoming whilst maintaining complete professionalism.
Mum is content and completely well cared for. She is treated as an individual and all her needs are well met. All staff are aware of her likes and dislikes which is also important to us. During the pandemic, their care for residents and families has been unwavering. Any concerns have been dealt with promptly and efficiently. The food is homemade and mum is given options to suit her needs. Abbey Court is like one big family and I cannot rate them highly enough.

The home has provided my father with excellent wrap-around care, all his needs are catered for taking into account his Dementia and great age. The home is very proactive with myself eg emails, contact, and visits. It is kept immaculate throughout. The staff go over and beyond to make sure residents
experience good food, entertainment, nice company, and feel joy. The home is professional in all aspects of care, empathy, dignity, and laughter. This is why I have given my ratings.

My father has dementia and we selected Abbey Court for his care based on recommendation. The level of care and compassion and treating him as an individual is exceptional. The staff are amazing and willing to assist and answer any questions openly and honestly. External healthcare professionals have
also been involved with the care and sharing information and updates has been exceptional. So pleased my father is receiving his care here and I would say it is more of an extended family which l am also made to feel part of. We know he is receiving the best possible care from a dedicated caring professional and compassionate team. During the covid pandemic, communication has been excellent and although contact has been limited, l cannot fault their endeavours to explore all types of communication ensuring we can maintain a form of contact. I would recommend Abbey Court to anyone who needs to move their loved one into care.

I have spent the best part of 10 years caring for elderly friends and family. My friend was dead set against going into a home until we chanced upon Abbey Court. It's clean, well kept and importantly a safe place for her. She thinks highly of the staff who are all very friendly and more importantly
seem to know their care job inside and out.

My husband was transferred to Abbey Court after being in hospital since June where his general well being had diminished. After only a day he was starting to take interest and try to talk. The staff have been very patient with his moods, not wanting food, drink or medication and this week he has started
to try to feed himself. He is always treated as a person and everyone uses his name. Abbey Court is the next best thing to home.

In my opinion, Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home is one of the best care homes I've seen. My friend has been in the home for over two years and I visit her weekly. On some occasions, I have visited when meals are served, food looks very nice as the cook is doing a good job.
The carers I find have
been kind and helpful to my friend. Improvements have been made in the reception area where visitors sign in and I've always been greeted warmly at reception which is very nice.

I visit my mum most days and find the home welcoming and pleasant. The staff are approachable and always busy helping the residents. My mum always looks clean and tidy. Her room is clean and fresh. The staff are excellent and some go above and beyond. I do hope this trend continues in the future.

Current Review Score: 7.6 (7.617)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.6 (7.617) out of 10 for Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.6 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.067 for Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (24 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 4.067

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.55 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbey Court Care and Nursing Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 10 = 0.3

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
