The atmosphere and culture within St. Joseph's are second to none. On our first visit, we knew our mum was in safe hands. The staff were unfailingly caring and couldn't have made us feel more welcome. Thank you so much to everyone there for making a difficult situation much easier for all of us.

Our dear Mum was admitted to St Joseph's for end-of-life care during May 2024. Prior to this she had been living in a residential home and after several admissions to hospital, it was felt that Mum's needs were more complex and now needed specialized nursing care. With the help of the management team,
who went above and beyond, Mum was discharged from hospital and into the care of St Joseph's very quickly and efficiently. When Mum arrived at St Joseph's, she received a warm welcome from all staff and we immediately felt reassured that she was in professional, compassionate and safe hands. We found the care at St Joseph's simply exceptional. She was treated with patience and dignity by all staff, throughout her stay. As Mum approached the end of her life the skill and knowledge of the nursing team ensured Mum was kept comfortable and pain-free and the family supported and informed at every stage of Mum's final journey. We will never forget, thank you all.

My mum only spent three days at St Joseph’s before she sadly passed away, but I could not have imagined how beautifully she was cared for by the staff there. My mum was treated with the utmost dignity and respect and the staff went above and beyond to make myself and other members of our family feel
supported and informed every step of the way of this very sad end of Mum's journey. Thank you so much, your care and support will never be forgotten.

Reply from Julie Anderson, Manager at St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home

It was our pleasure to care for your mum in her final three days. I will ensure that all the staff that cared for Mum will see your very lovely words. When walking into St Joseph's for the first time, I had a sense of tranquillity and was greeted with respect from all members of staff. I could not have placed my husband in safer hands; he was loved and respected by all who looked after him. We, as a family, cannot thank them enough and highly recommend
St Joseph's as the best care home for your loved ones. He was in St Joesph's from 31.01.2020 - 25.04.2023.

Reply from Julie Anderson, Manager at St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home

Thank you for your kind words; your husband was a lovely, kind and gentle man, and all my staff were very fond of him. It was our pleasure to care for him for the three years he was with us. Thank you again for taking the time to send in a review; it means a great deal to every at the convent.

My mother-in-law was sent to St Joseph's from the hospital with heart and kidney failure to receive palliative care. Although she was only there six days before her passing, her care here was second to none. The staff are so very kind and friendly and extremely professional. The building itself has
a very welcoming feel and is spotlessly clean. My mother-in-law's room was spacious and full of natural light overlooking a lovely garden. I cannot thank the staff here enough for making my mother-in-law's inevitable passing peaceful, calm and dignified.

Thank you, Jane, for taking the time to leave this review. It was an absolute pleasure to know the staff at St Joseph's. Everyone, at all stations, was kind, caring and considerate not only to my late husband but also to me. They looked after me whilst I spent my last hours with him. The cleanliness is remarkable in such a large building, and the food is second
to none. I can't praise St Joseph's enough.

I can't praise the staff here enough for the care, kindness and respect they showed to my dad in his final days and to me and my brother, who were basically with him 12-13 hours a day, sometimes even overnight, as he was on end-of-life care. It gave us so much comfort knowing he was in good hands, and
it was a real blessing that he ended up at St Joseph's Convent. There really are no words to say how truly grateful we are to you all.

Mum was admitted as a palliative care patient following 13 weeks in the hospital. On admission, her face lit up, and we saw a big difference - she was so happy. The staff were so caring. Mum was admitted to a hospital several times but was always so glad to return. Sadly she had to return to the hospital,
where she passed. Her last wish was to spend her final days at St Joseph's, but she was too frail. Thank you for giving her a new life, be it all too brief.

Reply from Julie Anderson, Manager at St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home

Dear Ann, thank you for your kind words. We, too, are sad that Mum was not able to return to us before her passing. Mum did enjoy her time with us, with her infectious laugh and cheeky sense of humour, which all the staff members enjoyed. Our thoughts are with you.

I cared for my wife for six years as she had succumbed to dementia. She developed pneumonia, which caused her to decline further and faster. It was now obvious she was beyond my carer skills. I was very reluctant to place her in care. My comment was tangible, but I was so very reassured by the total
care provided with love and dedication by St Joseph's.

My wife became a resident in St Joseph's in March 2021. She had a fractured hip and vascular dementia. Initially, she had severe pain until the staff on advice changed her medication. She was on completed bed tet as she was unable to sit up. For someone who was confined to bed and did not have a bed
sore is a testament to the care she received. As an ex-nurse of 50 years, I cannot praise this home highly enough and would recommend St Joesph's to everyone considering going into care.

My wife has been in St Joseph's for two months now since suffering from a stroke. We chose St Joseph's based on recommendations from friends and family. CQC reviews are good, and daily extended visiting has proved all reports are right. The standard of care, quality, empathy and professionalism is exceptional.
When your GP says she would place her mother in St Joseph's without question. There really is nothing better than can be said.

My mum only spent four weeks in St Joseph’s Convent Nursing Home, but I can not fault the care and compassion of the staff. What struck me immediately was that every single person you passed said hello, just this small gesture made a huge impact, following nine weeks of Mum being in the hospital where
the staff hardly spoke.
It was an obviously caring environment; the staff came across as enjoying their job and genuinely caring about those they looked after. The environment is clean, comfortable and welcoming. The gardens are outstanding - a lovely place for residents. During Mum’s final days, the staff were outstanding and a comfort to her family. I can only say a huge Thank you.

My mom went into St Joseph's when she was discharged from the hospital and needed a home for further recovery. We were recommended to St Joseph's, and we received a really warm and friendly welcome into the home, both when we had an initial visit and when Mom arrived there. After coming out of the hospital,
Mom was quite weak, had lost a lot of self-confidence and was quite nervous about going into a new environment. However, the quality of the care, friendliness and different range of activities turned Mom into a completely new person within only a few days, and she got her old personality back, looking so much brighter and healthier. This was down to the excellent care and treatment that was given to her in St Joseph's, along with a lot of friendships from the staff and other residents there.
As a family, we cannot thank all of the staff at St Joseph's enough, from the manager, nurses, care staff to the receptionist, they were all so friendly, helpful and caring towards Mom and our family.

Reply from Julie Anderson, Manager at St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home

This care home and the staff who work there are exceptional. In an age where there is so much negativity around Adult Social Care, standards of care in care homes, and worries about such services, there are only good things to say about St Joseph's.
The kindness, compassion and genuine dignity that
is afforded to residents and their families, many of whom are in their final days of life, is outstanding.
Every member of staff knows you by name and acts with respect and pride for all those in their care.
I cannot say enough good things about everyone at St Joseph's, and from the day that our Mum moved in, to the time of her death, she was treated with genuine affection and care by all who work there.

My family was very distressed by the severe decline of our dad in the ten days he was at St Joseph's for respite care, which included the loss of over eleven percent of his body weight and severe dehydration.
Without going into detail he deteriorated physically, emotionally, and cognitively and by
the time he returned home he was very frail.
Dad suffers from Alzheimer's and the change of 'routine' clearly created challenges at St Joseph's. But such challenges must be typical in a care home setting that offers dementia care?
We were so disappointed, having hoped that respite here would have been a positive experience.
We did, on a more positive note, meet the staff who were clearly caring and concerned for Dad.
Finally, Dad's wedding ring, which to our knowledge has never been off his finger, disappeared during his stay.
We have notified the Manager of our specific concerns.

Reply from Julie Anderson, Manager at St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home

I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations of care for your father; whilst he was having respite care at St Joseph’s Convent Nursing Home. As a team, we strive to provide the highest level of care at all times for all of our residents. I have since spoken to my team at great length after I received your letter of complaint. Although my team felt that we did give your father the care he required, we have taken the concerns that you raised and now have a more robust pre-assessment process to ensure that we ask more searching questions regarding how the care is being delivered in the home environment. Hopefully, in gaining further detail, this will reduce the change in routine which can cause distress to new residents. I do understand that these changes won’t change your experience of St Joseph’s Convent Nursing Home however, I hope you take some reassurance that we have taken on board your feedback and can assure you that we pride ourselves in providing the highest quality of care.

Both my mum and my dad consecutively received care at the Convent over a period of eight years. The care throughout was of the highest quality - warm, compassionate, attending to the slightest details, and completely trustworthy in terms of the support for my parents' physical and mental well-being.
I visited daily over that period and was always warmly welcomed and supported. During the lockdowns, prior to my mum's death, we worked collaboratively and creatively to find the best way to maintain contact, with safety and wellbeing always being the primary consideration. The staff became friends and were always willing to discuss matters and consider possible changes. I will forever be grateful to everyone at the Convent for the care they gave, and for the love they showed.

Dad was a resident at St Joseph’s for several years and was looked after extremely well. His room was lovely, and his personal care good. He was encouraged to join in lots of different activities, and the garden is wonderful for sitting out in the summer. The best thing about St Joseph’s, without a
doubt, is the people who work there. They always have time to say hello and are cheerful and caring. The receptionist is really friendly and knows everyone. When Dad needed full nursing care, the transition was seamless, and he was looked after with dignity right to the end.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.056)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.056) out of 10 for St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.844 for St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (57 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 64 Ratings = 4.844

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.212 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Joseph's Convent Nursing Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 49 registered maximum number of service users is 9.8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.8 = 0.612

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
