It has gone way downhill since my previous grandmother was in there in 2014. My auntie, father and sister go on my behalf now, because where my nanna is now where other residents are and they upset other residents who have "worse dementia" than my grandmother and one even screamed down my ear and I'm
autistic and it was not pleasant, but that was the only time the staff actually did something about it! Not only that, every time we go, the staff or dementia residents always take my nanna's stuff and never to be seen again. When we or my auntie go to complain about this staff do nothing about it and my auntie has complained too many times now to the "manager" and does absolutely nothing about it! Also the staff are still on their phones rather than doing their job, which if that's the case why are they in this job? So please send someone to check that place, because the good rating on CQC I think is faulty.

Reply from Mandy Reeves, Operations Manager at The Poplars Nursing & Residential Care Home

Thank you for sharing your comments with ourselves and providing me the opportunity to respond. I have spoken with the home manager and she has advised me this matter is under investigation having been raised by a relative. I understand it is difficult when you visit the home if you are on the area where your nanna lives as sometimes people's behaviour when living with Dementia may be unpredictable at times. Perhaps it may be more suitable to encourage your relative to have your visit in a different part of the home if they are willing. At the home, we record all care given to residents on a MPOC, which is a handheld phone and all staff have their own device which is allocated by the company. If there is any further information we can provide for you, please do not hesitate to ask the manager or ask for my email address and contact me direct. Thank you once again for sharing your concerns with me.

Much improved service, friendly and helpful staff. Clean and warm environment. I'm happy and feel at ease with my mother being cared for at this home.
Sometimes have to wait to get in at weekends as there is no office staff but overall a good place.

I looked at other care homes in this area and this one came top in my opinion regarding value for money and the
experience, kindness and understanding of the staff. There is also a call system in every room that will alert the nursing staff and care staff 24 hours a day and just one more thing the
food is excellent.

My mum says she feels safe at Poplars. That is comforting for her family. She is fed well and the staff are very attentive. She has made lots of friends during the year she has been a resident. Thank you for looking after my mum.

Current Review Score: 7.1 (7.138)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.1 (7.138) out of 10 for The Poplars Nursing & Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.6 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.5 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.638 for The Poplars Nursing & Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (18 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (9 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 47 Ratings = 3.638

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Poplars Nursing & Residential Care Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0.25

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
