Our 57-year-old brother was transferred to The Old Vicarage from our local hospital. We had a look around before we made our decision and were warmly welcomed by the nurse in charge and the team. Our brother received 10 weeks nursing care, a number of which encompassed end-of-life care. The whole team
were kind, caring and compassionate towards not only our brother but to us as a family and his friends too. It was an anxious time all round and the management took the time to listen and respond to our queries. We could not have asked for better care in his last few days when we remained with him day and night. We are truly grateful, thank you. We were aware of an activity programme but our brother was too poorly to participate so unable to rate.

The staff are very kind and support me with all my needs. I feel well looked after and safe. I would prefer to be at home but I cannot look after myself. I see the manager everyday and she checks that I have everything I need. The food is really nice, especially the cakes. My room is small but is ok.
I can put my photographs up.

My mam went to The Old Vicarage in her final week of her life. I’m a gypsy who lived in Goldenhill all my life our family came night and day to be with my mam in her final days. I stayed with my mam the staff went above and beyond nothing was too much trouble for them. I could not possibly thank the
staff enough, the home had a beautiful homely feeling to it. All staff deserve medals for being so kind to everyone who came through their door. Best care home I've ever been in, beautiful friendly staff they couldn't do enough for all my family to help us deal with the loss of my mam. I will be going in this week thank you all so very much. Best of the best.

This home was chosen by the hospital and is out of the area I know. It was chosen because it could meet the very specific needs of my mother. I have discovered that members of management and staff are always friendly and welcoming. They respond immediately to any query or concern I have and are always
kind and understanding as well as supportive. I am kept fully informed by them and they telephone me immediately that there is something that I need to be told about. My mother is treated extremely well, with respect and cheerfulness, even when she is very challenging. I appreciate the way all members of staff speak to her. They have taken time to get to know her and sometimes ask me questions about the people she mentions so that they understand who she is talking about. During the months that my mother has lived there, the environment has been considerably upgraded and it is welcoming, bright and cheerful. It is always clean. I am very happy that she was placed there.

Reply from Lesley Forrester, Home Manager at The Old Vicarage Nursing Home

We found the old Vicarage Nursing Home to be all we could ask for when caring for our brother-in-law who was a patient for six months receiving palliative care. The care provided by the staff was exceptional. They made sure all his needs were met during this difficult time with cheerfulness kindness
and understanding. The manager was always available to talk to us when we had questions to ask. A special mention to the office supervisor whose compassion and helpfulness shone through on some very difficult days.

Reply from Lesley Forrester, Home Manager at The Old Vicarage Nursing Home

I would like to thank all of the caring staff for looking after my Mother. I have seen most of them during my visits to the home over the past few months and they have all shown care and compassion for us both, it gives me great comfort knowing that my mum is in good hands when I'm not there. Last weekend
when I visited the home I was greeted by her carer telling me that my mum was in the upstairs lounge. One carer had styled my mum's hair which was a great surprise to see her looking so good chatting and enjoying a chat with the other residents. This is the first time that I have visited when my mum was dressed and out of bed.

Reply from Lesley Forrester, Home Manager at The Old Vicarage Nursing Home

Thank you for your kind words regarding the care received by Mum. I have also had the pleasure of meeting with her husband who visits most days. I can confirm that your mum spends most of her time in the communal lounge and engages in therapeutic activities. The home is secure with a key-coded entrance and exit and is a secure environment for our residents. Your mum is in a shared room which was provided at the request of her husband as she is a very sociable person and enjoys the company of others. However, I feel your rating for the management of the home is unfounded. Records indicate that you visited the home on 2nd April and 18th June both of which are a Sunday. At no time have you met with or attempted to speak with the home manager in order to make an informed rating.

The staff are excellent, nothing is ever too much trouble. They do a very good job under some difficult circumstances. The dementia building needs the rooms brought up to date, should be all laminate flooring, not carpet. I do understand the difficulties and cost of this and the cleaning but feel sure
it would improve things. I notice some decorating has started and you may already have this in hand, just my opinion.

Reply from Paul O'Grady, Development and Delivery Manager at The Old Vicarage Nursing Home

Thank you for your review. We appreciate the ratings for our staff who we know work really hard to ensure the highest standards of care. We are currently updating some of our rooms and we do have a maintenance and repairs schedule. We are changing our flooring to laminate in some areas of the home.

My wife was recently transferred from another nursing home due to its closure. Her room here is much smaller and just about adequate. It is sometimes difficult to move a chair down between the bed and the outside wall when she is facing in that direction.

Reply from Lesley Forrester, Home Manager at The Old Vicarage Nursing Home

Hello, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you have found her room adequate. If you would like to discuss the layout of her room please do feel welcome to come and speak with us and we can see if we can re-arrange this to suit. Many thanks.

The team provided excellent care for my elderly mother who was in the last weeks of her life. She was well cared for, kept very comfortable and spotlessly clean. We will be forever grateful for the care and compassion shown to my lovely Mum and us, her family during this sad time. The staff were lovely
to my Mum and we will never forget them and what they did for us. Thank you so much.

Not able to get a full opinion as only allowed 30 minutes visit, due to covid. Mother was able to talk and make sense before covid so able to keep an eye and sort problems out for her, if any. She is now unable to tell me what is going on due to her illness, so I have to make observations in my short
visit, which is not ideal.

Reply from Paul O'Grady, Development and Delivery Manager at The Old Vicarage Nursing Home

Thank you for your review. We are living in such dangerous times for our residents that measures we would obviously rather not have taken, are crucial. We all look forward to a safer world and getting back to the way of life we enjoyed in the home.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.610)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.610) out of 10 for The Old Vicarage Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.710 for The Old Vicarage Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (102 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 124 Ratings = 4.71

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Old Vicarage Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
