First experience of a nursing home for our relative. Sadly turned out to be a poor one. No senior members of staff introduced themselves or rarely spoke to us as family members.
Our relative was kept in isolation for over half of their stay, at risk of falls this only impeded the situation and made
respite a difficult time for all. The family felt the need to visit still daily again against the point of respite care.
Couldn’t covid tests be done at home prior to avoid this for residents? If at all still needed now. Staff were all wearing masks and appeared not to be transitioning into a covid recovery.
Told to ring to give the time of the visit which is very restrictive and had to visit in the bedroom; never in communal areas. This wasn’t home from home as we expected, very depressing for the resident and family.
This resulted in ending respite early.
Tablets stock amount we thought were not returned, own GP cancelled by the home leaving us with our relative in end-of-life care with no GP and took ages to sort.

Reply from Emma Smith, Home Manager at Brookholme Croft Nursing Home

We are sorry that you feel you had a negative respite experience. The period of stay to which you are reviewing was back in March 2023, which was a frustrating and restrictive period for all involved. Our resident’s safety is paramount and unfortunately, at the time, care homes were still very much led by Covid government guidelines. The government guidance was continually changing and all new admissions (even respite care) were isolated for a set period of time, even with a covid negative result.
For the safety of residents, the guidelines were that masks were still be used and that visits take place in personal bedrooms. This was to minimise any risk of cross-infection as visitors were no longer being tested. Visits were requested to be phoned in advance so that the residents could be in their room ready for their visit, and also so that we could limit the number of visitors in the building.
It is standard procedure that respite residents are registered as a temporary resident with our nominated surgery during stays. This is so that the respite patients can be treated for any acute illness should it arise, as the surgery that your relative was registered with, would be deemed to be out of area, and would not attend.
If you require any further clarification on the covid guidelines at the time, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 2.273 for Brookholme Croft Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (1 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 11 Ratings = 2.273

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 0 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brookholme Croft Nursing Home is based on 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) =

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2. 0 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.2 = 0

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
