Moorland House provides high-quality care in a loving caring environment. The feeling in the home is like a big family living together. The health care is brilliant and the needs of the residents are paramount.

When we found out that my father had to go into a care home, we thought it would be difficult to find the right one. Moorland House has proven to be a fabulous ‘home from home’. From the first meeting to our final goodbyes, my father's care has been outstanding. Over the last 2-years, nothing has been
too much trouble. The staff often going above and beyond the call of duty, especially under the trying conditions of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Professional and empathetic their care has been genuine and heartfelt, and I (and my dad) wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend their service. My family would really like to thank the whole team for their kindness and devotion throughout dads stay, and know that we made a perfect choice.

My mother's care throughout her years at Moorland House has been excellent. All the staff really knew and understood her as a person, respecting her individuality and her wish to be as independent as possible. They are friendly, caring and compassionate for families as well as residents, and well
qualified and knowledgeable too. They try to keep events and celebrations going in Moorland House, to give residents a focus and enjoyment - particularly important when visits are difficult. They also have worked hard to enable contact and some visits once covid restrictions started to ease - that was a really difficult balance when the safety of residents and carers had to come first. My mother and I really appreciated our times together in the garden over the summer; they made all the difference for us. Moorland House is a home, and its friendly, homely atmosphere stands out.

My husband and I have been struggling with his Parkinson’s for some time now and following a fall requiring surgery we decided he needed a more protected environment and were lucky enough to get a room at Moorland House. Although Covid has prevented normal contact, meaning I haven’t even seen his room
properly, the staff have been very helpful and welcoming. The care is such that after a few weeks I see him looking better than he has for a long time which is a big relief to me. Part of this is due to the reliable administration of Parkinson's medication. I have never experienced less than patience, kindness and receptiveness to ideas from the Staff and appreciate all that you are doing to make my husband feel at Home and cared for with Professionalism especially in the context of the current Pandemic complications. N.b option choices completed without the benefit of being able to observe Care in action due to Covid.

My mother moved into Moorland House in July 2020, at a time of some difficulty for her and during lockdown. She now feels much more at home, but initially she found it hard to settle. Without the help and support of the staff we could not have achieved this, and I really feel that they have 'gone the
extra mile' to help and address her specific needs. The management is approachable and accessible. They discuss problems with us and together we have found creative solutions to Mum's problems under very difficult circumstances, including ways for the family to help support Mum. My mother is in a good place and she also recognises this. Although currently scaled back because of the virus, the programme of activities offered at Moorland House is still quite diverse and Mum has enjoyed and benefitted from them. Our overall experience is that Moorland House is a caring home, with committed and caring staff and management, who have been very supportive and sympathetic to Mum's needs.

Mum has been in Moorland House for 12 years and she tells us that going there was one of the best decisions she ever made. Inevitably there have been a few bumps in the road over such a long time but that is only to be expected. She has been safe, warm, well fed and comfortable and I have always been
happy to know she was in safe hands despite my being 150 miles away. The staff are kind, respectful and considerate and do a remarkable job in often very difficult times. I greatly admire what they do for her. Unfortunately, as her closest relative, I have not been able to visit more than 10 times a year but have always been made welcome. Everyone's job has been made so much more difficult by Covid19 but Mum has nothing but praise for the way that the staff are coping with this impossibly difficult situation.

The staff at Moorland house have been excellent throughout the COVID period working hard to keep relatives in touch with residents and ensuring that the residents are looked after very well. The staff are very thoughtful and caring and have coped remarkably well with the undoubted strain of the current
pandemic. While it has been tough on residents and their relatives, I have been happy with the arrangements put in place to visit whenever the situation has allowed. My mother has remained cheerful and happy during this period which is a testament to the care she receives.

Lovely place, saving up to live there myself! Everything and everyone is friendly, clean and welcoming all the time. My mother chose to give up her own home to move there after my father died. She has lived at Moorland House almost 4 years now, and she feels it is definitely her home, not just where
she lives. As her physical condition has deteriorated over the past year her daily care from staff has increased but she is treated with fondness and kindness by all the staff, and we could visit anytime and take her out before the Covid 19 restrictions came in.

Mum has lived at Moorland House for almost four years. Staff are aware of how hard it is for many people to give up their home and move into care and they do everything possible to ease that. They respect Mum's preferences and routines. The environment is lovely and the activities programme outstanding
– varied and engaging. Mum loves the music events. Mum would still prefer to be fully independent but values the support of staff, given with love and good humour. They are caring, committed and compassionate. Staff and leaders are always accessible and responsive. It was important to Mum that family continued to be actively involved in her care and the staff have been exceptional in accommodating this wish. They have welcomed us not just as visitors but as full partners in Mum's care. It is a happy home with a strong sense of family and friendship among staff and residents. The staff have worked hard through the Covid crisis with great success, to keep Mum safe, healthy and happy.

In my view, Moorland House is excellent. The buildings are well-appointed and the gardens are nice. However, it is the staff which are the key. Both pre-Covid and during the current crisis, the staff have been determined to do a great job - they are kind, caring and compassionate. They know and clearly
care for the residents. They are good at communicating with relatives and have done all they can in this very difficult time with, as far as I can see, very little help from the Government. I take my hat off to them. I am glad we selected this home for my mother. I really appreciate all you have done and will continue to do for my mother.

Your mother is a valued member of the home and is involved in the indoor and outdoor activities that are really important in keeping the residents stimulated and in touch with developing the social interaction that we all need. Although the residents have, like everyone else, been restricted in what we can do, your mother has still managed to continue what she likes doing at the home. She walks in the grounds and gardens of Moorland House with friends that she has made (keeping 2 metres apart ) and I agree these are lovely. She has recently had a seed kit for growing plants in the garden so is busy with this project at the moment. She is a pleasure to know and care for and we are blessed she chose Moorland House.

My spinster friend has been a resident for just over one year. She is now very fond of the staff who have become close to her and when time allows chat with her. I feel she looks on them in place of family. She is often "singing their praises" to me. I have found them to be caring, kind and when I have
needed to ask questions or help them be aware of issues regarding my friend, they always listen and act upon information.
This friend is in a room with no view, which she has not been happy with in the past, but now that she has the possibility of a move does not want to change.
My friend, due to health issues will sometimes not join in the entertainment/activities provided, but when she does often enjoys them. She likes shared mealtimes.
During the lockdown, it has been extremely hard for the staff and residents, but the staff have worked really hard and the neighbours, Methodist church family and Minister, have been pleased to encourage them with the 8pm 'clap for carers'.

I was dreading putting my mother in a home, however, the great team at Moorlands made the transition really easy for her. She has been a resident for two years and without question, the staff have been so friendly and supportive, both to my mum but also us as visitors, making the whole process far better
than I ever imagined it could be. The recent way the staff managed to contain and support the residents during Covid highlights how dedicated they all are. At times, the processes may be a little lax but to me, this is more than made up by the happy environment. Rooms and grounds are good and so is the food - testified to by the weight gain of my mum after losing so much before she was properly cared for.

Well-appointed home. Pleasant gardens and easy access. Rooms vary but all are reasonable. Staff are very caring with huge doses of patience. They always seem very friendly and eager to assist when I visit. They are very knowledgeable of the residents.

My father decided to enter Moorlands House in early 2018 following on from a couple of trials/respite in the preceding two years. During his stay, I found that the general standards were very good. Specifically, the comfort, security and presentation, maintenance and cleanliness of the bedrooms was
first class. Alongside which the programme of activities/entertainment was both sufficient and appropriate. However my main purpose in providing this review is to express my appreciation to each and every member of the team - it is not possible to express in words how truly superb they are - suffice it to say, they managed to combine consistently high standards whilst demonstrating wonderfully caring attitudes at all times. Thank you.

My mum has been living at Moorland House for two and a half years now and has settled in really well. This is in no small part due to the staff who have always been friendly, caring and supportive, they really do go the extra mile. This has meant that Mum feels this is her home not 'a home' and this
is really important. The food is great, good quality and varied. As Mum is quite fit and active she is always keen to be involved in any activities or outside trips that are arranged, if anything there could be more provided in this respect. She loves the easy access into a big garden and the fact that she can walk easily into the village or to the local bowls club which is only a few hundred meters away and can even take slightly longer walks from the house down to a beautiful river. Her room has a nice view which she values highly. Overall though the home is made by the people, and the staff here have been wonderful in all respects.

My mother spent 5 weeks in Moorland House during March and April 2020, initially for respite care but Covid meant her stay was extended. During her time there the team were really good in looking after Mum - they appeared kind, caring and compassionate. Given the challenging circumstances in that
we were unable to visit due to lockdown they were great at accepting the parcels that we delivered and always tried to take the phone to her when we all called her which was greatly appreciated. When she was taken ill the nursing team looked after her really well and kept us informed.

The love and care which my father received during his time at Moorland House were excellent. He was particularly complimentary about the food but I also know that he felt safe and looked after by everyone.

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews.   • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Shirley Reece-Johnson

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2018

I have worked in the care sector since 1998 after completing my university studies. Initially working with Children in Care then I moved to working with older people and this is where my passion is. I have been part of the MHA team since February 2017 and worked at Queenswood in Nottingham first then moved to Moorland house 2018 and I love the home, residents and we are blessed to have a wonderful staff team. I am married to Bri and I have 2 sons Adam, Tim and 2 grandchildren Ophelia and Cosette and daughter in law Sophie. I live in Chesterfield and my interests are reading and watching dramas and movies this helps me to unwind. We recently adopted a dog (pug) called Alfie that we are trying unsuccessfully to train. I enjoy going on all types of holidays and spending time with my family and extended family.

Job Title: Deputy Home Manager

I have been in the care industry for over 10 years now and worked in numerous care environments such as Residential, Assisted Living, Domiciliary and also training. Since the age of 21 I have always had a job role in a senior position. I have learnt a wide range of skills and knowledge in the care sector throughout the years, and I have always been passionate in providing the highest standards of person-centred care. The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming which to me, is what makes Moorland House so different to previous homes I have worked in. The staff team who I work alongside with are an absolute credit to the home and MHA as a whole. My favourite part of the job has always been interacting with the residents, hearing their individual stories or just simply seeing them smile. I have worked at Moorland House for over 2 years now and I’ve never been happier! Outside of work, I’m usually spending time with my 7 year old daughter and going on adventures together with our Labrador puppy, Harley.

Job Title: Administration Manager

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.

Susan Lamprell

Job Title: Home Chaplain

Joined: 2020

I started working here as a Chaplain in August 2020 and I had such a warm welcome from staff and residents. As part of my job role, I work alongside our amazingly talented Activity Coordinator getting involved in activities participating with residents and spending quality time with them all such as playing scrabble every Tuesday and also arts and crafts. I carry out a midweek service every Wednesday morning and also hold a prayer group every Friday morning. I am always available to talk to anyone, staff, residents, relatives as a listening ear. I spent over 20 years working for the NHS as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals in London and Essex and more latterly at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I am very involved at St. Thomas’ the local Anglican church where amongst other things I help lead the Home Bible Group for the older folk and help run ‘Young at Heart’ once a month where we get together for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and plenty of chat.
