My Mother could not fault the care she received. She also said the food was amazing. The staff are extremely caring both with the residents and their families, especially through difficult times and with the extra problem of Covid. The staff were excellent at keeping us updated with Mum's condition
and were very helpful at keeping us in touch with Mum charging her phone for her or letting us talk to her on the home's phone.

Mum was end of life, the care she received was excellent, the staff were brilliant with mum, myself and my sister, helped us understand mums care and nursing needs and were very sympathetic and caring when mum passed away. The home was also spot on with Covid regulations and cleanliness. Would thoroughly
recommend the home to anyone seeking one for a member of their family or friend.

Some of the staff here are excellent, very caring and we know that they had my grandma's best interests at heart.
However, the lack of communication from the home regarding visits and facilitating her to communicate with family was distressing for all of us. On one particular occasion, no one had mentioned
there was only one person allowed to visit which caused my brother and I to be turned away and told we were not even allowed to wave at her from a safe distance. This broke us all emotionally.
I understand that it is difficult in these circumstances and government guidelines haven't been very clear.

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review of our service. We are sorry you have had cause to raise a concern in relation to Covid-19 visiting restrictions. We are sorry that you were not communicated to in relation to visits to the service and apologise for any distress this may have caused to yourself and your family. As I am sure you appreciate, Government guidelines are changing frequently in response to the escalation of Covid-19 and as such we endeavour to communicate information as quickly as possible to all our relatives throughout our services. Unfortunately, at the time of your visit, the restrictions in place stipulated one consistent visitor which the service adhered to. All our Next of Kin contacts were telephoned to advise of the changes to visiting however it appears you were not present on the contact lists. We have reviewed our system in relation to this and updated our records accordingly to minimise the risk of any such incident of this nature occurring again. Again, may we take this opportunity to apologise for any distress this may have caused and thank you for your time in raising this concern.

Kind, caring management and staff who lovingly looked after our terminally ill daughter. Nothing was too much trouble. The pandemic made things difficult for visiting and access, but every effort was made to ensure that our daughter had as many visits as possible including overnight stays. We appreciated
that everything possible was done to make our daughter's last days as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

My mum spent the last 4 weeks of her life at the home when her medical and care needs could not be met at home. The care they gave more than exceeded our expectations and the nurses were wonderful especially with end of life care. Highly recommend.

My mother was a resident for just over 5 years, having suffered a stroke after already showing signs of dementia. She was looked after with care, thoughtfulness, compassion and kindness. The staff were always easy to speak to and gave me confidence that they knew what they were doing, especially in
terms of Mum's medical needs. The building, having been built I guess in the 1960s or thereabouts was beginning to look a bit "tired" in places when Mum moved in, but ongoing improvements were made and continue to be so. The place has a comfortable, cheery atmosphere and always appears clean and fresh. The staff were particularly kind and helpful as Mum approached her death.

My husband was in the home until his death on November 30th, having been sent there from hospital for end of life care 3 days earlier. His care was good. We have no complaint with the home but were disappointed by the NHS system because he could have ended his life in the care of the hospital where
he was also well cared for.

Introducing Nicola Millar
Home Manager at Shelton Lock


What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?


“Kindness to me is treating everyone you meet with respect and dignity, in a way in which you would expect to be treated yourself.”


After beginning her career in the care industry more than 15 years ago, Nicola has gained great knowledge of general nursing, with a specific interest in palliative care.


As a qualified nurse and dedicated healthcare professional, Nicola has gained a wealth of experience in providing care to elderly people to help enrich their lives, leading to her progression as Home Manager.


Nicola closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for every Resident. She extends this caring approach to her Colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to Residents in a way that means they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


When asked what she enjoyed most about her role, Nicola remarked: “I love being able to make a difference to Residents’ and Relatives’ lives through providing compassionate, kind and high-quality care.”


Nicola credits her greatest achievement to diving the Great Barrier Reef, where she got to experience swimming with sharks.


Outside of work, Nicola enjoys an active lifestyle as she participates in Zumba, yoga and Pilates, as well as spending time with her horse and upcycling furniture.
