Situated in the attractive village of Ruddington, and only five miles from the centre of Nottingham, Balmore House is a fine country residence that has been sympathetically converted to offer its residents high quality residential and nursing care. The large gardens contain many well-stocked borders and trees and offer residents a choice of several places in which to sit and enjoy the warmer weather.

My mother moved into Balmore Country House on 26th September 2024. The staff from the Manager to the whole team are all highly professional and all possess that can-do attitude. Their approach to care for the residents is exceptional. The home has that airy bright vibe and my mother was very well cared
for throughout her stay. I felt highly confident in leaving Mum in the staff's care.

My father-in-law had Dementia and was a resident of Balmore for about a year. We all found the staff incredibly caring working hard to get to know him, his background and his interests and using these to respond to his needs in a really personalised way. They created resources that reflected his professional
career and the phase of life his Dementia placed him in, helping him to settle, feel he belonged and was valued for who he was. Everyone who worked there knew his name and spoke to him when they passed him. Despite events occurring when residents became agitated or incidents occurred, we never saw staff respond in any way except calm and caring. And even when things became problematic, they still worked to find a solution that centred around my father-in-law remaining calm, safe and cared for. As a family, we were always welcomed, with my Mum being invited to share meals and events at the care home with her husband. We will be forever grateful to everyone for their care of him. Thank you.

My father was resident for a week and a half of respite at the Ruddington Retirement Village, part of the Balmore complex. He had a great experience, the staff couldn't have done more and the facilities and his room were very comfortable and extremely clean. He also enjoyed the food and drink, even
a little party with dancing. As a family, we found the staff gave useful feedback, were easy to communicate with and his stay was a great success.

The family and myself are happy and satisfied with the care my sister is receiving at the Balmore Country House Nursing Home. The staff are very kind, caring and helpful.
Unfortunately, my sister is not able to make and meaningful contribution regarding her care as, due to her Alzheimer's, she is
no longer able to make her views known. However, she does seem to be content, settled and accepting of the situation she is in.

My wife suffered a stroke which significantly affected her cognitive functioning. As a result, after a long stay in the hospital, she was transferred to Balmore Country House after I had conducted quite extensive research as to the most suitable nursing home in which to place her.
I visited her on
a regular and frequent basis and during her three-month stay there I observed how the staff dealing with all aspects of her care were not only professional and diligent in the ways in which they cared for her but also kind and personally involved in doing so.
As she came to her end they showed the greatest compassion to both her and my family and looked after us in a very loving way. They did not have to do that.
Advice - read between the lines of the CQC reports. I decided that Balmore’s “good” was better for my wife than the “excellent” awarded to other perhaps more institutional places in Nottingham.

My mother and father who were both suffering from dementia were very well cared for and the staff are all very friendly. I was made to feel welcome whenever I visited and my parents were very happy in the care home. They had rooms opposite each other and we were able to sit together in Mum's room and
watch television if they wanted to be alone. They also took part in activities organised by the staff.
My mother also had Parkinson's disease and the staff encouraged her and my father to sit out in the beautiful garden in fine weather.
As their health deteriorated more care was given and they had regular visits from the doctor. I would recommend this home to anyone looking for care for their relative.

The home is a quiet, calm and friendly environment. The staff are capable, professional and skilled at their jobs. All the staff I have encountered have been patient, polite and caring. My mum has been a resident for 16 months and the turnover of staff has been low meaning staff know Mum's likes and
dislikes well and take care to chat with her while they carry on their jobs.

My granma was admitted to Balmore Country Nursing Home in June 2022 (against our wishes) as she needed to be kept off her back due to a pressure sore. She wasn't kept off her back at all she was flat on her back the whole time. When I questioned a staff member about this I was told she was 'on a tilt'.
She wasn't 'on a tilt ' I have pictures. My daughter and her partner visited the Saturday night and whilst they were there my granma was being sick. It took 20 minutes to find somebody to come to my grandma's aid. She was on her back and if my daughter hadn't been there she could've choked. She died in the early hours of Sunday.

My dad and family received the level of care and support we had hoped for. Communication with the administrative staff and nurses was very good, even during Covid lockdowns. End of life care was excellent and Dad was comfortable and calm. Real effort went into out and indoor activities and entertainment.

Lovely, hard-working, caring staff. Rooms are very basic. Intrusive residents are dealt with, but consequently, belongings go missing. Mum has spent huge money living there for three-plus years, and the extensions look wonderful. Wheelchairs need maintaining and cleaning more frequently. Overall, staff
work with challenging, heavy workload residents. Thank you all.

My mother has been a resident of this care home for a little under a year and while the care started out as adequate it has declined considerably over recent months. Clearly, staffing issues are a major problem as there is never enough staff to cope with demand. Dementia patients are left to wander
around unsupervised, call buzzers remain unanswered sometimes for hours at a time. In reality, this means Mum can spend as much as 18 hours confined to her bed as she requires assistance to get up. She is put to bed sometimes at 4.30pm in the afternoon. I believe this is a benefit to the care home staff and not my mothers well being. Recently clothing and personal items have started to go missing from Mum’s room and although this has been raised numerous times with the manager, she shows very little concern or ability to be able to deal with the problem.
I could not in all honesty recommend the Balmore Country House as a place to put your loved one if you want them to have reasonable care.

Staff were all lovely - very caring, polite and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble.
They were always willing to talk about any concerns. Even though my relative is finding a change of home confusing. I feel happy that she is in very good hands well treated and respected. I'm sure it will soon feel
like home.

A caring and conscientious staff, and professional manager.
I was impressed by the level of cleanliness and the staff were most helpful in enabling my mother to adjust to her new setting.
Visiting and Covid testing routine ensures the home is Covid free.
The home is in an attractive rural setting
with well laid out lawns and gardens.

As a nurse myself, I have been very happy with the care being given by the staff in this care home. My mother-in-law says that all the staff are nice and very caring towards her. She has a very pleasant room leading into a garden area. Her appetite is poor and the staff always try to find suitable food
to tempt her to eat. The home is also very clean. Overall I feel very happy to recommend this home.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.874)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.874) out of 10 for Balmore Country House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.713 for Balmore Country House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (60 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 80 Ratings = 4.713

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.161 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Balmore Country House Nursing Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 15.2 = 0.461

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
