Was worried with my relative needing to go in to a care home that we would be excluded from his care, but the staff and management have been nothing but friendly and welcoming. He settled in immediately and the activities team and carers really made him as us feel at home. There's been a buzz about
the place recently and it's good to see everyone smiling and laughing with the residents

My partner has been in hospital since October 2023 he has a very complex condition. He has come into this care home to be assessed, going forward I can't fault the staff they are very friendly and are dealing with my partner's complex needs really well they take time out to listen and are also very
nice to me so far so good.

My dad was in Hawthorne Nursing Home because he had Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. The home itself may not look shiny and new, compared to some purpose-built homes, but the care and support the staff gave to my dad during his time there was first-rate. The staff were kind and compassionate and kept
me well informed about how my dad was doing. They were also always very friendly and made me feel welcome whenever I visited my dad.

My husband was a resident of Hawthorne for over 9 months until he passed away earlier this year. In that time I saw my husband treated with kindness and respect.
The nursing home is not modern with en-suite facilities. It is a converted vicarage with all its peculiarities, which makes it a challenge
for staff, but means it has a warm homely feeling for residents.
I was blown away by how quickly the staff reacted when my husband was not well, calling out ambulances and getting him to hospital very fast, which meant infections could be knocked on the head before they took hold. The support I received at these times was incredible. That sort of attention from staff is incalculable.
I have nothing but praise for all the staff at the nursing home who work as a team and make it a home for all those who cannot function any more in the world in which we live.
Staff that are kind, caring and compassionate is what makes a good nursing home and Hawthorne certainly is that.

Both my parents are now sadly in this care home. My mum moved there initially in January, dementia now has more of her than we do. She needs nursing care and I’m pleased to say Hawthorne Nursing Home has given her the support she needs. My dad moved there 3 weeks ago and has Parkinson’s, no dementia
yet. Hawthorne have offered support to both me and my parents that without, I’m pretty sure our situation would now be horrendous. There’s no getting away from the fact that the buildings are dated, the gardens and buildings need some TLC and investment but that wasn’t high on my list of needs for my parents and these are being improved. What was high was support/care/meals/sensitivity/help/dignity which they are both receiving in bucketloads. There are activities in the week which residents are encouraged to be part of. My mum previously was in a far more expensive care home which looked fancy but the care and support was 0. I guess it depends what you’re looking for!

Our mum was sent here in March 2021, during the pandemic, on end of life care, we had little choice at the time and mum made good progress and is still with us. The problem we had with this nursing home, was with very poor communication around safeguarding issues, a lack of transparency and a very high
turnover of staff and 4 different managers within 2 years! The home is very basic with tatty chairs in the lounges that are not fit for purpose. The residents are not allowed to get out of their chairs as there is never enough staff to watch over them. Activities are far and few between and residents do not have any stimulation. After too many safeguarding incidents we have moved mum to a lovely residential home, she is free to roam about and they have activities every day, I only wish that we had moved her sooner!

Definitely not a caring home. Residents were put around the wall in the lounge. Little or no attempt to engage with the residents. No stimulation, even the TV was hardly ever on. My husband was bored stiff! He normally asked to be taken to bed at around 6pm so that he could watch his own TV in bed.
Very often only one carer in the lounge. He thought the food was awful. Needs redecoration throughout. My husband thought it was a dump. I moved him to a different home after less than 3 weeks. He needs an insulin injection every day, apparently, Hawthorne House should have provided 2 weeks medication, there was one insulin pen with only around 3 doses left. The new care home had to phone 111 to get an emergency prescription for the insulin. Hawthorne House did not even provide a list of my husband's daily medication requirements. Absolutely disgusted with the place! One to steer clear of.

Care and compassion were shown to my mother-in-law from start to finish during her short stay at the Home. The Home Manager was extremely professional and caring. The staff tended to her every need and made her as comfortable as they possibly could. During her last hours, a member of staff stayed with
her until we arrived. Thanks again for all your help during this time.

My husband has been in the nursing home for a year now. The care providers have shown him the upmost respect and treated him at all times with dignity.
They have recently redecorated all the communal rooms and they look fresh and clean. I have not been able to visit him for the last 3 weeks due to
the Covid-19 lockdown. However, I have been kept up to date with his progress with a regular telephone call and managed to speak with him each week, over the telephone. (however, this is difficult due to my husband's illness) This is a very difficult time for all, but I can rest easy knowing that they will continue to care for him.

The Hawthorne Nursing Home has been exceptional in their care services provided to my father. The staffing of the care home has improved significantly as well the cleanliness and love provided to its residents. I would highly recommend this care home to any family who is looking for peace of mind when
confronted with such a difficult and emotional decision. The staff and management are truly caring and professional in their actions. A big thank you to the manager and the team for providing comforting for both residents and families too.

The Hawthorn Nursing Home although hidden away behind trees, once inside the staff are welcoming and friendly and nothing is to much trouble. There have been many improvements refurnishing and decorating within residents own bedrooms and the main areas. Yes, it still retains its old-fashioned status,
but that is the charm of the home. The only stumbling block and I don't know what the answer is difficulty in parking.

My mother has been in Hawthorne three years. During this time I have found both staff and management compassionate and caring. Any concerns I have had, have been addressed and if needed changed.
The food is great having plenty of options, if options don't suit my mother then the kitchen will accommodate
with other choices.
The home is clean and free from urine smells.
Hawthorne has a friendly atmosphere and I would definitely recommend.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.677)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.677) out of 10 for Hawthorne Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.483 for Hawthorne Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (30 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 58 Ratings = 4.483

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.194 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hawthorne Nursing Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.2 = 0.694

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
