Our elderly relative came to live at Sandwood in December 2023. The home is spacious, clean, and odour-free. It has large en-suite bedrooms, wide corridors and multiple living spaces. The food is good, with an attractive and varied menu. Our relative is not an easy person to deal with, yet the staff
have always been friendly, welcoming, caring and professional, often over and above the call of duty. They do not just care for physical needs but sit and spend time with residents. They also keep in regular touch with us, her family. Thank you so much.

Thank you for your five-star review. It's great to read how much your relative is enjoying their stay at Sandwood. Thank you for your kind words concerning our staff.

My mum was a resident at Sandwood Care Home for 9 months until her recent death. I couldn’t have chosen a better home for her. Every member of staff, regardless of their role, had an abundance of patience, humour and respect. I had peace of mind to leave Mum in their care, knowing she would be well
looked after. There were many opportunities for activities and to enjoy entertainment and it was great to see photos of my mum participating in these. I was always made very welcome when I visited and was able to stay as long as I wanted. I’d recommend it to anyone.

Sandwood has a Care Quality Commission rating of:
Safe – Requires improvement, Effective – Requires improvement, Caring – requires improvement, Responsive – Requires Improvement, Well-led – Inadequate.
Ignore this at your or your loved ones' peril. Whilst this inspection was from 21 October
2020 I can personally vouch that it is accurate today.
The staff employed by Sandwood are kind and caring, however, the management and Abbeyfield do not appear to have the same qualities. In fact, during the 16 months my mum spent at Sandwood there were effectively 6 changes in management.
Sandwood wrongly administered dangerous, controlled drugs to my mum many, many times – all requiring the necessity to report to Safeguarding.
Sandwood and Abbeyfield may attempt to defend this review in any way they can, but I would say this “is giving up your loved one to a care home with this reputation worth the risk?”
Happily, my mum has now moved and the contrast could not be greater.

I believe that my family friend is being denied her basic human rights. The care staff all seem fine but the management is unpleasant and over-zealous. My friend who is aged 95 is denied visits from her family and when someone is allowed in they place two carers in her room throughout the visit. The
staff fear for their jobs so do not question ludicrous management decisions. It is appalling.

From the first you could see those cared for were shown dignity and respect. The attention paid to my father and other residents was superb. The staff were always a pleasure to deal with and I felt my father could mot be in safer hands, in a warm, friendly home from home environment. Having had to visit
other homes recently, they do not appear to show the same compassion to residents, who appear to be left too much on their own, and they are very clinical. The care home staff and residents should be proud of what they do and where they are. Thank you for taking such good care of my dad.

So pleased with the respect and care shown to Mum, even in the difficult moments due to her Alzheimer's. There is a varied choice in the activities, from walks in the park, doing a spot of gardening, baby animals, music and singing to stimulate the happy times and memories.

My mother moved to Sandwood a year ago. She is capable and has full capacity, but following a couple of fainting fits, she lost her confidence and became withdrawn. Her husband had died seven years previously, and she became lost, lonely and scared.
It was Mum's idea to move into care, and we looked
at three care homes, but Sandwood was the one she felt comfortable with. She has become much more confident and has made friends. The staff know her name, which is very important, and she is well cared for. The home has some dementia patients who can be disruptive, so Mum and a few others have their own quiet lounge, with no television, where they can enjoy reading, jigsaws and chatting. Well done to the home for noticing their needs and providing this for them.
I visit Mum at least twice a week and am always made to feel welcome.

Mum has lived at the Sandwood Care Home for almost a year now, following a series of falls resulting in hospitalisation. She has dementia and cannot walk unaided. She requires a gluten-free diet. The staff all seem to be patient and caring and know the personalities of the individual residents. The
rooms are clean, spacious, light and airy and have ensuite facilities.

We have been very happy with the care our mum has received at The Firs Residential Care Home. The staff are caring and attentive and Mum is very settled. Mum’s transition from a previous care home to The Firs Residential Care Home was managed smoothly and we are pleased to see a wider range of activities
and more regular entertainment scheduled for residents. We recently enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea for Mother’s Day and look forward to sharing more occasions like these in the future.

My mother was discharged from hospital unable to sit up in bed properly. Within a couple of days of arriving at The Firs she was up, dressed and walking. The level of care has been both kind and professional and my mother is now very contented with her surroundings. From a position where we were awaiting
a call from the hospital giving us the news that she had not survived the night we now have regular telephone calls and visits when the pandemic allows and are looking forward to celebrating her 97th birthday.

My Mother came to The Firs from hospital mid-November 2019 in a very agitated condition, she is 96 and suffers from dementia. The wonderful care and kindness of all staff meant that she settled and began to smile again.
During lockdown, I felt comforted knowing Mum was safe, content and well cared
for.
An additional mobile number was set up so family members could speak to their loved ones while visiting was not allowed.
The new manager is making improvements in spite of the Covid-19 situation. Communications between the home and residents' families have also improved.
The Firs has had no cases of Covid19, a credit to them.
Mum is looked after with kindness and respect.
Well done to The Firs.

The Firs is wonderfully run! The team are friendly & professional and show a great deal of compassion for the residents in their care. Even when situations appear challenging to me, they are handled in such respectful and thoughtful ways. We recently held a small 85th party for my mother-in-law in
the quiet room, which overlooks the newly landscaped patio garden. I was encouraged to decorate the room, bring cakes and bubbly and we played a slideshow with music. We had fun, it was very much appreciated by Mother-in-law and Father-in-law and by those who were invited. The very 'smiley' in-house chef even brought Mum in a cake with candles. It is a heart-wrenching situation when care can no longer be provided in the family home, it's a decision made with a heavy heart. To know that she is very well looked after, with a level of nursing care that is second to none, in a warm, clean, safe and caring environment really does help the family to come to terms with the change. Thank you.

I always find the staff at The Firs Nursing Home very approachable and they make time to discuss any worries or issues as and when they arise.
They are always busy but never give the impression that they don't have time for anyone, either residents or visitors. In previous employment, I have visited
clients in many different care homes but I have to admit I could not find any that were better than The Firs at providing first class care to its residents.

This Nursing Home smells good and feels good from the moment you enter the front door. The staff are very busy but never fail to smile and say hello. They know me and they know my aunt well and understand her needs. I can tell that my aunt is comfortable with the staff from Manager to cleaner by the
rapport she has with them. I have visited many nursing homes and usually, they are cold and efficient. The Firs Nursing Home is warm welcoming and efficient.

My mother was a resident at The Firs Nursing Home from January 2013 until her death at 97 in June 2017.
The managers and staff could not have been more kind, loving and caring.
I visited my mother 2 - 3 times a week during this time and only observed compassionate caring by dedicated and long serving
staff.
I would highly recommend it to those needing this level of nursing support.

Current Review Score: 8.0 (7.977)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.0 (7.977) out of 10 for Sandwood Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.0 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.957 for Sandwood Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (36 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (10 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 70 Ratings = 3.957

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.02 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Sandwood Care Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.2 = 0.645

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
