St Mary’s Nursing Home is a care home in the Greater Manchester suburb of Moston that provides high standards of nursing and residential care.

This includes care for people with challenging physical needs, those with a dementia or a related condition, as well as palliative, day and respite care.

Dedication to kind and considerate care has led to St Mary’s achieving the Gold Standards Framework (Commended) for palliative care and a Dignity in Care award.

St Mary’s has a chapel on site, which features stained glass and a marble altar.

Residents and members of the public are welcome to attend mass, which is broadcast into rooms throughout the home on both television and radio.

The home offers a clean, comfortable and welcoming environment for care.

Rooms are clean, welcoming and homely, while a guest room provides a peaceful place for friends and family to stay. Lounge areas and a light, airy garden room provides relaxing communal spaces, while a unisex hair salon provides hair cuts.

The sense of serenity within is enhanced by a private walled and landscaped area to the front and mature woodland gardens to the rear that border onto the pleasant green space of Broadhurst Park.

A food menu is served in dining areas throughout the home, while a tea room provides residents with a place to enjoy treats and light bites.

Great emphasis is placed on providing residents with a programme of activities, with the home’s minibus enabling residents to take day trips out.

Located just three miles (5km) to the north-east of Manchester city centre, St Mary’s is within easy access of the M60, with bus stops, a Metrolink tram stop and train station close by.

This is, on the whole, a good nursing home.
It has recently employed a lot of agency staff, who do not have a very good understanding of the job and especially their communication skills are very poor, which does not work with nursing old people, especially with dementia and various, serious health
issues.
I have had issues with communicating with the agency nurse on duty, who hasn't even read my mother's notes and so has no idea of her health issues.

In the short period of time that my wife has been in St Mary's, I have found everything and everybody concerned with the running of them, to be extremely professional and very caring.
I would have no hesitation or doubt in recommending this home to anybody.
A very big thank you to all concerned.

The staff are lovely and always listen if you have any concerns. The rooms are a decent size and we were given permission to decorate our Nan's room and bring in a few pieces of furniture to make my Nan feel more at home. There is an activity room run by two enthusiastic carers, the only drawback is
it isn't available every day.

My mother came here from 1996 to 2008 and spent her last two years 2008 to 2010 when she died on Friday March 19th, 2010, three weeks from being 100.
I have been coming to the care home for 21 years.

Mum moved into this home early in March. She is very poorly but the care given to her is first rate. Kindness and efficiency shine through at all levels. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 7.3 (7.250)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.3 (7.250) out of 10 for St Mary's Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.8 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.5 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.797 for St Mary's Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (28 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (10 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 3.797

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.453 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Mary's Nursing Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 14.8 = 0.203

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
