I am a friend of a resident here. I assisted him making the choice of care home. From the start the staff were so welcoming & approachable. My friend moved in in October & has been very happy & feels safe & cared for. There is always activities etc to join in with & Halloween party, Christmas events
etc. In my opinion this residential home is one of the best that I have seen.

Mum has been a resident for nearly 6 years - Millfield and its staff are the best in the area. The facilities (bars, lounge, shop and cafe etc) are fantastic and homely. The rooms are spacious, clean and well-presented/furnished. All staff are friendly, approachable and professional - they all feel
like our extended family! They look after Mum perfectly and make her happy/comfortable. There are loads of activities and Mum is always encouraged to join in when she's able. We can't rate this home highly enough - it's perfect!

Your care home is full of the most wonderful and loving people ever. You took care of my great-grandmother until the very end. I saw the love and care you had for her, when your carer came in and kissed her on the head, in the final days of her life, whilst I was visiting her with family. You are such
a compassionate bunch. Keep up the really great work.

I must write a review the staff are caring, compassionate and go well beyond their remit. My son has MND and the staff are brilliant with him and make him feel valued. No one wants to be in a care home but this home is one I would recommend highly.
A huge shout out to the ladies who interact with quizzes
and activities to keep everyone amused and happy.
Thanks to you all.

The Unit Manager and Care Team have been amazing, and nothing has been too much trouble, my aunty is comfortable, well cared for and settled and looks better than she has for a long time. As a family member, I have felt continually supported and informed throughout the whole process of my aunty coming
initially as a short-stay resident to now being permanent. My aunty has a nice room, with a great view of the lovely gardens.

My dad was transferred here from the hospital as he was at end of life. He was only there for approx 8 hours before he passed away. The staff are friendly enough but the home itself is not very clean. My dad's room hadn't been cleaned, there was a bin in the room that was full of rubbish. The floor
was dirty and the overall decor was very outdated. I wouldn't have had my dad as a resident in there and unfortunately, as he was at end of life the hospital decided it was their choice not mine to transfer him there. I think there is a lot of room for improvement to the home and then it would be a lovely place.

Reply from Gillian Starkey, Customer Services at Millfield Care Home

Firstly we would like to offer our sincerest apologies on the loss of your father.
We are already aware that the decoration does require some updating and this is an ongoing project with some areas of the home already completed. We also note your comments in regard to the cleanliness of the home and this is something which we will be monitoring closely.
We apologise that the experience you have received was not to our acceptable standard and will be working on this with the home.

Absolutely shocking care home. Tell you to phone to book an appointment before you can come and see relatives yet you can ring all day every day and no one ever answers the phone. Yet when you turn up at the home majority of the staff are sat in the office feet up. Absolute disgrace. Certain staff roll
their eyes at you when you ask them a simple request like can you let me out as it is key coded doors like they have no interest in actually doing their job.

My mum's been in two previous homes before this one and I can honestly say this is the best home out of them all. The staff are tremendous with all the residents and helpful. If you have a question they have time to explain things and put you at ease.

The care given to my mum during these difficult times has been amazing. She tells me when I FaceTime her, don't worry about me, I'm being well looked after, which makes me feel at ease when I can't see her. I have always been happy with the care she receives and the home as a whole. I would definitely
highly recommend to anyone.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.007)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.007) out of 10 for Millfield Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.772 for Millfield Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (75 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 92 Ratings = 4.772

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.235 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Millfield Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 92 registered maximum number of service users is 18.4. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 18.4 = 0.435

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Managers

I started my nursing training in 1986 and have worked in the care sector ever since, becoming the manager at Millfield in 2018.

I always wanted to do something medical and to teach, and I am extremely lucky to have had a career in which I have been able to fulfil both of my ambitions. I have been a nurse in both the NHS and the private sectors and have lectured in the adult education sector.

My "personal" motto is: “Treat others how you wish to be treated yourself”. It is of the utmost importance that our residents are always treated with respect and dignity, and that they enjoy an enriching and fulfilling experience at Millfield.

I am married with two grown-up children and love to read, cycle and walk my dog. I am also a trustee of a local charity that runs six nurseries.
