My mum was looked after beautifully during the years she lived in Belong Wigan. Choosing a care home for a relative is such a difficult decision but I'm so glad we found Belong as they really do provide the highest quality of care you could hope for. Mum was diagnosed with a complex neuro-degenerative
condition at a relatively young age and the care staff at Cedar house took the time to get to know her and give her the support she needed (physically, mentally and emotionally). The household's accommodation is cosy and homely - it felt like her own home, rather than the typical nursing home set-up but still had all the equipment and adaptations needed. Belong Wigan is a happy, vibrant community with staff who really care about their residents. Thank you again for looking after Mum, I know she was well-cared for and happy there.

Since moving to Belong Care Home our daughter's life improved greatly (and ours also). The staff showed compassion to both of us as parents and still do. Choosing a nursing home can be so difficult. For anyone reading this, there are four features about Belong Wigan Care Home that make it stand out. First; the household system (eleven residents per household) is fantastic. My late father had dementia and the familiarity of being in a living room that
resembles a home, where people sit and eat together, is excellent. During Covid, it also minimised infection. Second; the home has on-site nursing care 24/7 and they are excellent. Other homes say they have this but actually use external resources. Thirdly the online portal enables you to log on and monitor every move, from their meals, the amount of fluid intake, activities, sleeping - everything is on there. If you live 200 miles away, like me, this is a godsend. Finally, the culture of the home is a testament to everyone who works there. It's a happy place, you hear laughter all the time, staff are loving and caring, it's a vocation not a job. Hope this helps!

Belong Wigan has provided residential dementia care to my mother for over eleven years, and it has been of a consistently high standard throughout. The staff are not just professional but also naturally caring, warm and committed. Many of the current care staff who look after my mother have been there
as long as she has, and it's very good to have this continuity. Communication is good - I am always informed of any concerns and consulted on significant decisions. The living areas and bedrooms are comfortable, pleasant and well-furnished. It's hard to imagine a better place for my mother.

Mum has been living at Belong Wigan for 3 months and thanks to the brilliant staff team, she has settled well and is happy. The range of activities on offer and the quality of the food are both excellent. We look forward to our lunches in the Bistro when we visit! The rooms and shared areas are well-decorated,
clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly, helpful and kind. It's lovely to see how staff speak to and interact with residents. Mum's quality of life and general well-being have been greatly improved by the move to Belong Wigan and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a safe, caring and friendly place to live.

I can relax knowing my disabled brother is being taken care of, his inability to read or write holds him back but the staff are wonderful with him even when he's having a tantrum and swearing and shouting at them.

Belong Wigan is an amazing place to live. Mum moved into her apartment just as Covid hit. The Belong team cared for Mum in her darkest hours when she couldn't see her family and had left the place she had lived all her adult life. The staff are amazing. We have never met more helpful, caring and committed
people anywhere. We would recommend Belong Wigan to anyone who asked. We have never seen mum as happy. The staff go above and beyond.

Nan moved in during Covid May 2020 and has never been as happy as she is now. She has made new friends and has got her independence back. Thanks to the activities ladies, she now has fulfilled days, full of amazing activities to keep nan busy. Her mobility has improved loads thanks to the ladies. Nan

The staff at Belong are extraordinary from the carers, through to the front of house staff, managers and catering staff. They are courteous, helpful and speak in a friendly and caring manner to residents. The Belong reception area where we visit residents during the pandemic is bright, warm and welcoming.
You are always offered a drink when visiting relatives!
My dad is in Elm House. The staff are so helpful and make my dad very comfortable giving him the care he needs whilst giving him some feeling of independence too, which is a fine balance. The food is of good standard and the staff go the extra mile to offer alternatives if he doesn’t want what’s on the menu that day.
Belong is not like any other care home. It is a home from home. Thank you, everyone.

My father was a resident since December 2020 at Belong in Wigan. He passed away on Friday 13th August 2021. Dad used to live in London but became terminally ill. I didn’t want him to be alone so, I took time off work and moved him in with me at home in Wigan. However his health deteriorated within 7
months and after speaking to the manager and her team at Belong in Wigan, I knew dad would be well cared for and his need met. They made him feel welcome, loved and like a member of their own family. This has been a great comfort to me and my sister. I can’t thank them all enough. Everyone at Belong I have had the pleasure to meet and know are truly wonderful and caring people. Thank you all. I know he wants the easiest of residents, but he was my dad and I loved him. I thank you all for your kindness, compassion, patients and care. God bless you.

My elderly father has been a resident at Belong Wigan for the last 12 months. From my first inquiry phone call to Belong (at the height of Covid lockdown) to the ongoing daily care, he has received subsequently, the management and care staff have been kind, helpful and professional. Over those 12 months,
dad has needed more and more nursing care: it is obvious from his care notes (which we can view daily online via the Gateway service) and most obviously when I and family members visit, that he is being well looked after and all his needs met. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday and staff did everything to make this a special day for him. From the standard of food, cleanliness, to the professionalism and kindness of staff, we cannot praise Belong Wigan enough.

Gill Menguy

Qualifications: NVQ 5 in Management, Level 4 Registered Managers Award, C25 Coaching Certificate, D32/33 Assessor, D34 Internal Verifier, Moving & Handling Instructor, First Aider, Fire Safety Instructor, NCPLH (national certificate for personal license holder – sale and supply of alcohol)


Gill has led the team at Belong Wigan as General Manager since the village opened in 2009. She is highly experienced and has worked in the care profession for over 25 years, starting her career as a care assistant in a dementia unit. She progressed to the role of Care Supervisor and then to Care Manager in 2000, working at several homes within the organisation. Gill was promoted to the post of Home Manager in 2003 and moved to Sherwood House in 2006, where she moved the learning and development strategy forward to prepare the team of staff for the move to the Belong setting and working culture. She holds the Registered Managers Award, along with a number of other management and training qualifications.

Lana Welsh

Job Title: Support Manager

Qualifications: Registered Nurse, Level 5 in Leadership and Management


Experience: Lana moved from Edinburgh in 2002 to complete a nursing degree at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and qualified in 2005. She worked as a Registered Nurse for eleven years, as a Specialist Nurse in women’s health and oncology.


Lana's goal was to move away from acute care into a social care setting and in 2016 she began her career at Belong Wigan, as a Registered Nurse. She went on to be nominated for the Good Nurse Award at the 2017 Great British Care Awards, before progressing to the role of Lead Nurse in 2018 and in April 2019 she was appointed to the role of Support Manager. Lana has since completed a Level 5 in Leadership and Management and remains a Registered Nurse.

Tanya joined Belong in 2012 as a temporary receptionist and developed her role whilst working toward Health and Social Care qualifications 2 and 3, progressing to the role of Senior Support Worker and later to the role of Experience Coordinator, with responsibility for the development and implementation of a programme of activities for customers living in the village and the wider local community. In 2021, due to the retirement of the village’s long-serving front-of-house manager, Tanya made the decision to move back to the front-of-house team to lead the front-of-house, administration and caretaking teams.


Charlene

Charlene Frodsham

Job Title: Experience Coordinator

Local community champion, Charlene Frodsham, from Wigan, joined the team at Belong Wigan in early 2021, taking up the post of experience coordinator and working alongside residents and colleagues to provide a creative programme of meaningful occupation via events, one-to-one and group activities.


Initially from a customer service background, Charlene's enthusiasm and cheerful nature prompted her to take on the role of community champion for the supermarket brand Asda. It was here that her talent shone as she organised community challenges and fundraising activities for local groups and charities, including those that provide dementia care and support for adults with learning disabilities. When donating board games to Belong, she was 'blown away' by their set-up, which far exceeded her expectations of a typical care provider. Upon learning about the vacancy of experience coordinator, Charlene was excited to apply, feeling this was an opportunity that she couldn't let pass by.


Taking a leading role in both these programmes, Charlene will be working closely with the residents and providing activities to inspire and delight them.


Sophie

Sophie Walls

Job Title: Belong at Home Area Manager

Qualifications: Level 5 in Leadership Management.


Sophie has worked for the organisation for over 11 years, starting her career as a support worker in the village households. Two years later, Sophie was appointed to the role of senior support worker and quickly progressed to the role of lead senior support worker, before joining Belong's home care team.


Sophie has completed a level 5 in leadership Management and in 2013 Sophie won the Excellence in Resident Handling Award at the Regional Care Awards and went on to the National Care Awards and won the National award. Particular outstanding features included her ability to empathise with residents in their own care planning for moving.
