Located in the historic town of Leigh, Bedford Care Home provides long and short-term care for people with a range of different care needs, including nursing, residential and palliative care, along with care for older people with disabilities and dementia nursing care.

Bedford is a purpose-built home that is made up of six separate houses, all offering beautifully landscaped gardens and patios. Communal lounges and a conservatory provide the ideal settings to socialise and relax. Bedrooms are furnished and comfortable and all include a 24 hour call system. Residents may personalise their room with their own small pieces of furniture and belongings.

Nutritious meals are tailored to personal taste and dietary needs, and lighter snacks, homemade cakes and night bites are also available.

A full programme of stimulating and enjoyable activities are organised by the dedicated organiser and include arts and crafts, bingo, bowls and gardening. The home also takes part in a variety of local charity and community events, and friends and family are always made to feel welcome.

The staff at beech house were truly amazing with my dad in the two weeks he was there

I can honestly say the staff work so hard and they engage with all the residents even when they are really busy they treated my dad with dignity and respect at all times that goes for all the staff from nurses to the cleaners. We felt reassured that my dad was receiving the correct care whilst he was at beech house.We cannot thank the staff enough for making my dads time at beech house a positive experience and it was the only the distance for us that we knew we would have to move him to somewhere closer to home.

My Father was placed in Bedford Care Home after 2 strokes, Wigan hospital said he was moving to a home, it was a worry for my sisters and I, to be fair we had not heard of Bedford Care Home, however, there was no need to worry as all the staff where fantastic, my Father had his own room, but spent most
of his time in the communal lounge, where the was always staff around to cater for all his needs, the staff also created interesting things for them all to do, my Father actually enjoyed the care, and they helped him with his recovery, as he began to feel better, and eventually we took him home.
I have to say, "The staff helped him in his recovery and my thanks go out to them".

Before my Mum was moved to Bedford, she stayed inside all day, she didn't eat well, didn't sleep well, was reluctant to mix with other people and was becoming more and more agoraphobic and morbid. Since she moved to Bedford in January, she has really started to enjoy life a lot more. She has been out
to dancing and singing events, Bolton aquarium and museum, attended parties and made new friends and is even going ten pin bowling next week! I am so thrilled with the love and care provided by the whole team at Bedford, especially the way the activities team are able to get my Mum involved. It must have taken an enormous effort to get my Mum to believe she can be happy again and I can really see that she enjoys every interaction with the carers, nurses and staffing team. She now eats like a horse, sleeps in a proper bed and she even thanked me on my last visit for "giving her, her life back!". Thank you to the Bedford team for caring and helping my Mum to 'be happy' again!

Wouldn't put my worst enemy in this care home, the lack of care and acknowledgement the staff give their patients is evil. My nan sat from 6am to 4:30 pm in her own filth and was only changed as I requested it. This was done on multiple occasions. 40 beds and 5 staff at best. Ridiculous. Luckily we
moved my nan to a different care facility after 2 weeks. I would give this place 0 stars if I could.

I would like to say that the staff, from the people behind the scenes, to the staff on the units, are amazing. The care and love they give, without it being false, is truly humbling. Both our parents are there and I can say hand on heart it was the best thing we could have done for Mum and Dad. There
is joy and laughter, the rooms are clean and if mum is having one of her off days, shall we say, they go above and beyond, even making her jam butties, as she loves them. Never have I left there thinking I'd chosen the wrong home. I know I couldn't have done any more. All the staff are brilliant.
I don't know the management hence 4 stars, but everyone else is 5.

My mum went into care in October 2024 due to her Lewy bodies. She was initially assessed in a unit and then was moved to Astley House. Since being there, my sister and I are much happier. She is more settled and content. My dad came into Astley House in December 2024. We tried to keep him home but he
wanted to be with mum. He is well cared for. The carers are kind and look after all residents with a passion for ensuring they are engaged in activities and happy.

My mum moved to Bedford Care Home in December following twelve months in another care home. We chose Bedford due to my mum's rapid declining health with dementia and Alzheimer's. The care home she originally went in did not meet her care needs, since moving to Bedford last month, I have noticed a massive
change in her everyday life.
She has now settled in relatively well, has a lovely room which we have been able to make a "home". The staff from senior management, carers, domestics and activity workers are brilliant.
They are very knowledgeable when dealing with advanced dementia and very caring.
This for us, as a family, has been the best and right decision for my lovely mum.
I used to dread visiting her in her other care home as both she and myself would be quite stressed and get upset, now, thanks to Bedford, I do not have the same worries and anxiety, this is due to them actually caring for my mum like one of their own.

My dad was a resident on Lilford Unit for over three years and latterly, on Pennington where Dad passed away. The care my dad received was given with love, patience and kindness during this time by all staff. During end of life, the care team attended to Dad, making sure he was clean and comfortable.
Both day and night staff treated Dad with kindness and respect while he was unconscious and everyone supported me throughout the time there, giving me emotional support and care. What I can take away from my experience is that everyone knocked on the door before entering Dad's room, his personal care was attended to every 2 hours, both day and night. I was given plenty of food and drinks while I stayed with Dad and received lots of emotional support. Care staff from other units who knew Dad visited to see how he was doing and when he passed gave me their condolences.
I never wanted Dad to go to hospital but stay at the care home to die as he was cared for so well by brilliant and caring people.

My mother who is 89 years of age has been a resident in Astley House Bedford Care Home for the past 12 months. After suffering from frequent falls it became apparent she required 24 hour care. All the staff are excellent in their care and treatment of my mother and the organised activities are a great
way in helping to keep her mind active, slowing down the declining process that aging brings. The food is excellent quality with great variety and I find this is also helping in giving her more strength in her body than she previously had. The days out are superb whether it's visiting a museum or having afternoon tea. Regular visits from the hairdresser ensures my mother always looks nice keeping her dignity. She has her own room if she wants some quiet time but I always find her in the main room with all the other residents socialising. I am extremely pleased and grateful to the staff for their dedication carrying out their duties and their treatment of my mother.

Mum is happy and settled on the unit. The team care for her with dignity and respect, supporting her as required.
Relatives are kept informed regularly of a service user's progress, changes in health needs, including liaising with the multi-disciplinary team. Team members genuinely care about the residents
and can often be seen chatting to them.
Regular meetings are held where plans for the home are shared and questions answered.
The staff are always happy to answer questions regarding your relative.
Senior members of staff are also willing and do support the staff, relatives and service users.
The well-being team provide daily activities and trips out. They provide innovative ways to engage residents' participation.
Care plans are regularly updated, providing high-quality individualised care according to a resident's needs.
Residents are encouraged to make decisions for themselves.
Mum's room recently was redecorated and new furniture.
All in all, a great unit.
My mum's health had deteriorated in the last few months prior to progressing to Mum requiring end-of-life care.
Additional equipment was obtained to meet her needs.
Staff, including senior staff were very supportive both to my mum and myself.
Mum deteriorated very quickly one night and the staff who were on duty had known Mum since her admission and were amazing. They stayed with her until I could get there and were so supportive.
The next morning, the undertaker came for Mum and many of the staff came to pay their respect.
On the day of the funeral, as we prepared to leave Bedford Care Home, many of the staff came to offer sincere condolences and pay their respects as they said goodbye to Mum.
Some of the team came to the funeral.
On behalf of the family, I just want to say a huge thank you for everything they've done for Mum and the family.

My father-in-law has been in Bedford Care Home on Astley House for around 18 months. I visit very often and it is always a pleasant visit. Staff make me feel so welcome, my father-in-law is so looked after and he feels like he is part of their family in the home. It makes us as a family so relaxed knowing
all the staff are so caring and happy in their jobs. They all work so hard.

My grandad has been at Bedford Care Home for a good while, the home is such a nice happy place to visit my grandad. The staff are all very professional and helpful, the staff on reception are so helpful and always appear to be very happy. Management is very supportive with anything we need help with.
Activities are excellent, always things going on and days out are brilliant. They work so hard to make a happy environment.

Worst time having to leave my husband here. The hospital contacted them to transfer my husband 11th May. On arrival no staff knew he was being admitted. We waited, staff simply cleared a previous client's room, no cleaning involved, broken bed, dirty throw, he never in all the 3 weeks had his name on
door. He constantly had infections, he couldn't take his medication. I told them he had difficulty swallowing, I was ignored. He couldn't get out of bed, they left his food so far away he couldn't reach. I also told them he needed help eating. He had 21 meal replacement drinks and when he left he still had 12, should have 3 daily. He was at the end of the corridor alone, and on many occasions whilst I was there they forgot to bring his lunch. I had to find staff, they replied "oh he's out of our sight and we do forget him". The final straw, I told them he was unwell, to call a GP, he prescribed meds and it arrived 5 days later. He went back to the hospital on 29th May with an infection. Sadly he passed.

Unfortunately, no complaints or concerns were raised during the stay in May however an internal investigation has identified some behavioural issues at times and a poor nutritional intake as your husband himself declined meals on a frequent basis despite our continued attempts and efforts. We feel that the low gradings are not representative of the quality service we offer as is evidenced by our general feedback and review scores. My husband was in Pennington for over twelve months, the care he had was wonderful, the staff were amazing with him, I can't thank them enough, he had dementia and truly believed he was home which was a blessing. He unfortunately passed away in there and even the hours after they were amazing with myself

My mum has mixed dementia and we were worried about how she would settle. From day one, in January this year, her physical health has improved due to her nursing care and she is so happy and settled due to the appropriate activities provided and great trips out, as well as the care she receives which

I've been here since August and so far my stay has been wonderful. The staff are kind and management have been so helpful. But also respectful of my need for independence. Its reassuring to know I have the support if I need it. I can't speak highly enough of everybody there. I'm in a wheelchair and
I got to go on a barge trip the other week and it felt so nice to do something that I didn't think I could do. The care I've received has been second to none!!

My husband has been in Bedford Care Home since late December 2023. I was very anxious how he would be but after a month or so he settled.
The staff are wonderful very caring and very attentive.
The activity team also do a wonderful job. They involve residents in all kinds of things indoors and out.
All the activities shown on website are well planned and very enjoyable. Karaoke, exercises, dancing arts and crafts, bingo. Just a few of activities the residents are involved in and outdoor trips.
A really big thank you from myself and my family for all you all do.

When my mum was taken to Bedford Care Home, I was very wary after extremely bad experience at another place.
She was completely incapable of doing anything herself but with the amazing care, help and encouragement from all staff on Pennington she is now up walking and sometimes dancing!
The different
activities are well organised, in the home or out on day trips. It's great to see the photos of her enjoying herself and I know she's safe.
I'm always contacted if there are any illnesses or concerns, this is massively appreciated.
I can definitely recommend.

All the staff at Bedford Care Home are lovely, my grandad is in Astley House and although he wasn't happy at first, he has settled in lovely. Job Title: Home Manager

I started at Bedford Care Home as a Care assistant in 2005. I loved working here at the Nursing Dementia house I was at then, Since this I have progressed in my career through various roles at Bedford. I have been a Nursing Assistant, Unit Manager, Head of Care and Deputy Manager and I am very proud to now be the registered Manager.


I have always had a passion for Caring since leaving school and the Dream was to become a Nurse, But I took a different route as I had children early on.


My Goal is to make Bedford have a warm and welcoming feel to ensure residents/families, staff and visitors all feel at home. Everyone at Bedford is like Family.
