Westwood Lodge Care Home, situated in a peaceful residential area just outside Wigan, is a friendly and purpose-built home offering personalised nursing care.

Inside, the home boasts patio, premier and en-suite bedrooms, as well as a variety of places for residents to relax, dine, exercise and socialise including a hair salon, hobby room and large garden.

With a wealth of knowledge and experience in the care sector, the Home Manager leads the team to ensure residents receive the best possible care and support.

Paying attention to the nutritional needs of each resident, the catering team at Westwood Lodge create delicious meals to ensure a lovely dining experience for all residents and visitors, all of which can be enjoyed in the spacious dining areas.

The wonderful care team at Westwood Lodge design a varied and enriching activity programme, getting to know residents individually so that their personal interests and preferences can be factored in. This works towards creating an inclusive and engaging lifestyle at the home, where residents have something to look forward to each day.

To ensure connections with the wider community are maintained, the team also have good relationships with local community groups and schools across Wigan, and regularly arrange meet ups and trips to get involved with.

My father in law was welcomed into the home on 8th January 2019. Sadly he passed away on 17th. During his brief stay, he was well cared for by staff who were caring and very professional. Dad was treated with dignity and respect and so were his family who benefitted from an open visiting policy. The
facilities are excellent overall and a clean, safe environment. The manager was very open, informative, and supportive. The care staff and manager enabled Dad to die peacefully and with dignity and his family present. As a family, we can't thank them enough.

After having a stroke, my Dad moved into Westwood Lodge in June 2018. My Dad needs a lot of care and has vascular dementia. Overall we have been pleased with the care and support. Just a few problems with lack of numbers of carers, but this seems to have been resolved. The staff are amazing and take
good care of my Dad, take time to show consideration and dignity to all. There is a lovely atmosphere in the home. The staff have also shown kindness and support to me and my family.

Carers overall very good. Nurses as well. The only fault I have is when things that attended to by workmen i.e. Lengthening the bed, mending the hoist it takes too long.
My husband's bed has been reported for 4 weeks and still no one has been, I also think rooms could be hoovered more and urine bottles
removed from overbed tables.

It is with deep regret that we were unable to have your relative's bed extensions placed in a timely manner, unfortunately, we were transitioning maintenance operatives at the time and there was a communication misunderstanding. We have rectified this issue by introducing a more robust communication system which will reduce such issues in the future. Rooms are hoovered daily, however, sometimes it is difficult to access rooms more than once whether this be due to visitors or if it is not convenient for the resident if, for example, they are sleeping. We encourage dignity for our residents on a daily basis, however, we are respectful of individual residents' choices which at times are not seen as suitable to others.

Mum is confined to bed unfortunately so it is bedside care on an hourly basis.
Very good and friendly staff and managers seem good too although agency at times.
Very happy so far and would recommend these facilities and the workforce without hesitation. Very pleased.

Overall the home is good. Problems involving aunt and a member of staff that has been addressed and staff dealt with by police. Keyworkers now back in and running. When I have been at meal times, I can't tell what the food is when aunt asks. Better prepared fresh food needed, and fruit (I have mentioned
this a few times before). Safety of entrance to home has been addressed now after a break in, seems to be working well.

Mum has been here for 2 weeks up to now and will be a resident for a few months.
Up to now, we have been looked after with good information, good care, good one to one.
Mum is kept clean, comfortable and quite happy during the long period of recovery.
Everyone is friendly.
The facilities are very
good and the room that mum is in is lovely and clean, as are the general public areas.

After having a stroke, mum moved into Westwood Lodge in August 2016. She is severely disabled and needs 24/7 care.
There have been a few problems with lack of numbers of carers in the past but this seems to have been resolved. The staff are lovely and take good care of mum unless they are short staffed
(when a couple of occasions mum was left in bed all day - happened in 2017). Generally, the home is very good and I feel confident that mum is being looked after properly.

My mum has been well cared for and the staff are pleasant that are known to my mother. The downside is staff shortages, although agency staff are good, they are often unknown to my mum. Laundry, cleaning, meals are very good, activities are excellent, good entertainment, small things such as mums beads,
scarves etc overlooked due to staff workload.

We are currently recruiting for additional care staff to reduce any need for agency care usage. We strive to promote person-centred care to all of our Residents including the personal touches. We encourage Residents and relatives to liaise with their key-workers and unit managers so that individual care plans can reflect this.

For a great majority of the time, my wife has been very well looked after. The staff are caring and compassionate and always seem to cope when understaffed. Although my wife's room is nice and comfortable the community areas are a little tired and need updating and modernising. The car park always seems
to be a mess and needs to be lit up in the evening.

Our staffing levels are reviewed regularly and are based on the dependencies of our residents and the home’s occupancy and as a result, staff ratios will differ at times. Westwood Lodge is in the process of having a re-fresh where all communal areas will be redecorated and modernised in 2018. Additional lighting to the rear of the building has recently been installed, with the car park situated to the front of the building part of the next phase of maintenance work. Our maintenance operative regularly conducts external walk rounds to ensure any debris that has been collected is removed with immediate effect.

Since my mother has become a resident of Westwood Lodge I've had no problems with the care she has received. All the staff are very friendly and willing to help if you have any concerns. The home always looks clean and tidy and I am always made to feel welcome when I visit. Anyone considering a residency
here, I would definitely recommend it.

The staff are so caring and professional, you feel they are more family than employees. The housekeepers take such care in their work but also take the time to interact with the residents so they become friends. The activity staff do a really good job organising singers, exercise sessions, animal activities
etc to entertain the residents. I would recommend Westwood Lodge to anyone looking for nursing home care.

My father was resident at Westwood Lodge for seven weeks I cannot believe anyone could complain about the care given by the staff at Westwood Lodge. They are working with patients some with dementia, some very demanding and in my opinion, they cope very well under very stressful circumstances. I would
have no problem recommending this care home to anybody. My father died in their care and was treated with dignity and respect until the very end and I would like to thank everyone concerned from the cleaners to nurses for all they did for him.

Having moved my mother from another care home I have found Westwood Lodge to be excellent in all aspects of care. My mother's overall wellbeing has improved dramatically since going into Westwood Lodge and she is happy being there. All the staff are excellent and I put that down to the leadership of

What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?


“Treating people with compassion and respect, while also being careful and competent in response to their needs. To make a difference in someone’s life you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to care.”


As a Registered General Nurse for almost four decades, Karen has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for residents.


Karen closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for each and every resident. She extends this caring approach to her colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Karen remarked:


“I can ensure that residents are comfortable and well cared for. I am a good communicator and work closely with multidisciplinary teams to improve outcomes and experiences for residents.”


Outside of work, Karen is an adventurous traveller, having visited the Galapagos Islands, Bora Bora and a safari tour in the Serengeti. She also loves spending time with her grandchildren, Bobby and Nancy.
