Douglas Bank Nursing Home is set in beautiful countryside with stunning views over Appley Bridge, a quaint canal-side Lancashire village. It is easily accessible with good road and railway links.

The building was previously a 17th Century farmhouse and has been converted in a luxury care home, which specialises in providing nursing care for older people and people living with dementia as well as adults with enduring mental health difficulties.

There is a dedicated activities co-ordinator who provides a varied programme of activities that stimulate residents both physically and mentally.

All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and the team encourage residents to bring little mementos to make it feel more homely. The home has its own private gardens which residents enjoy at every opportunity.

My mum has been in the care of Douglas Bank care home for a couple of months now. She transferred from a more prestigious home in the Wigan area so that she could have dementia nursing care. A difficult decision to have to make during the Covid pandemic, but I'm so glad we chose Douglas Bank. The care
that Mum receives is excellent, and Mum always seems very happy, relaxed and contented. I would definitely recommend this care home to others in a similar position. The current CQC rating in my mind does not reflect the current situation, and if the management keeps going with their programme of improvements, then that can only mean a 'good' rating is on its way! Keep up the excellent work Douglas Bank.

Five years ago, our lives were shattered, and the decision was made to move Mum into Douglas Bank Nursing Home. She had been sadly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and her safety had become a concern for the family. Moving here meant that Mum was well cared for in a safe and secure environment. The staff
have always been very supportive, and her needs met. The home is clean, and the staff are friendly. Thank you to all those that have provided care for my mum, as we could not have done this ourselves.

Mum went to Douglas Bank in November last year as sadly we couldn’t provide the 24/7 care she needed at home. She was really quite poorly and traumatised at the time, having been in and out of hospitals and care homes during Covid 2020. It had been a very cruel 6 months for her not to be able to have
a family with her to support her, and she was very upset to have to isolate again in yet another room. However by Christmas, you could see Mum was much happier and since then she has just kept improving, physically and mentally. She feels safe and very well looked after. The staff have been amazing with her and really pulled out the stops to help make Mum and Dad's diamond wedding anniversary a special day for them. She has regained a quality of life that no one was expecting her too, this can only be attributed to the fantastic care she is receiving there. I can’t rate everything due to never being in the home (can’t wait!) but as Mum has no complaints I’ll put satisfactory for unknowns.

My Mum continues to thrive in this lovely, homely, happy, caring place. The last year has, obviously, been a worrying time but I know my Mum is in the best place and I am so glad I chose this home for her. The staff are lovely and the atmosphere is so friendly. They have done an amazing job keeping

My mum stayed in Douglas Bank for a period of respite, 5 weeks in total. The manager was particularly helpful in supporting communication with my mum during the Covid restrictions via telephone and video calls. This was a great support to me and my family when we weren’t able to visit mum. The manager
has a strong vision and work ethic to make Douglas Bank Nursing Home the best it can be moving forward.

Our dear friend had a fall and ended up in hospital. She needed a few weeks in a nursing home before she could return home, and moved to Douglas Bank. The staff at Douglas Bank are so caring and cheerful, always helping our friend whenever she needed anything. We couldn't recommend this home enough
to others who are considering a nursing home for a friend or a relative.

I regularly visit my friend who has lived at Douglas Bank for a couple of years now. I have seen the home go through some changes and in recent times, it is definitely moving in the right direction. The manager has recruited some lovely staff who work really hard, and the nurses can't do enough to
help the residents. The new activity lady is bubbly and outgoing and is perfect for the job. The place is homely and clean with some lovely meals offered to the residents. I think it's a shame that the CQC didn't see the positives in the home when they visited. The inspection should be based over the course of a few days, or a few different visits to get a true picture of how nice things are.

Very kind and friendly staff. Such an effort is made for residents, it is heartwarming to see. My sister enjoys the regular entertainment for residents and having her hair done in the onsite hairdressers.

My mum was a resident for three years with vascular dementia and terminal cancer.
My mum has always been treated with respect and love by the staff, encouraging her to undertake activities, encouraging her to take pride in her appearance - always giving praise.
In the last few months of her care,
she received intensive care and support, as did I, from all the staff and my dog was allowed to come in with me so that I could stay 24 hours with my mum.

I have been a resident in more than once care home so I can give an overall view. At present, I am a resident in Douglas Bank. An unusual case, I am in care due to a big mistake. A next-door neighbour put me into care after a fire in my house. They then decided to steal my land but a friend put a stop
to that and pays my fees. Douglas Bank is the best one that I have resided in and after seeing social worker I will be on my way back to reality.

My aunty stayed at Douglas Bank for a period of respite following a stay in hospital. The home manager assessed her at the hospital and she was admitted very quickly. The staff made her feel very welcome and really looked after. Thank you to everyone at the home.

I found the home very caring, the people are very considerate and loving. From the first visit until my mother's death the staff were terrific. No chandeliers, no fancy decor just a good homely feeling a warm feeling and as comfortable as possible.

John

John Holland

Job Title: Registered Manager

John Holland is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of experience. He started his nursing career at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. During his training as a nurse, he also worked at the Broadgreen Hospital and Stoddart House in Aintree Hospital. When John completed his nursing training specialising in mental health, he then worked at Ashworth Special Hospital and Altcourse Prison.


John has a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience and has been managing a care home for over 10 years. He enjoys caring for and supporting residents living with dementia and complex care needs through person-centred care.


John wants to use his nursing and managerial skills to help Douglas Bank develop and improve while keeping Residents and staff at the heart of everything they do.
