Mum has been at The Sands for nearly 11 months, she went in straight from hospital and was given end-of-life care, she is still with us, thanks to the care and attention given by all the staff. Dad goes and visits every day and he is made to feel welcome, he is there 4 hours a day, he is also catered
for, it is a friendly place for Mum and the staff are great and professional, dignity and respect are given at all times. Relatives are always made to feel welcome and encouraged to visit. Birthday and special occasions are celebrated with cakes and sometimes entertainment. I cannot imagine how I would have coped without the support from the staff at The Sands. The receptionist offers the warmest of greetings to whoever visits. The Sands Care Home has been a godsend to myself and my dad.

Mum was with The Sands Care Home in their EMI unit for two months. Throughout this time she was treated with professionalism, dignity, compassion and genuine affection by all the staff. They supported her challenging health needs and provided us with regular updates and support. Thank you to all the

Mum has lived at the Sands for seven months now. It is a great relief to see her being cared for by such a professional, considerate and compassionate team of staff. They have got to know her well and meet her individual needs with respect, patience and sensitivity. There is always a warm and friendly
atmosphere whenever we visit or phone. Since living there she has put on weight and is obviously eating well. She likes being able to choose from the menu every day. Her room is now a mini version of her house with her most treasured possessions around her to make her feel secure and comfortable. Communication from the staff team is very good and we are always kept informed anything new and our queries are always answered as soon as possible. Any health or medical issues are dealt with immediately - the doctor called- the family contacted. Mum is treated with dignity and respect and says she is happy to live with such lovely people to care for her.

Current Review Score: 8.1 (8.103)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.1 (8.103) out of 10 for The Sands Nursing & Retirement Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.2 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.875 for The Sands Nursing & Retirement Home is calculated as follows: ( (21 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 4.875

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.228 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Sands Nursing & Retirement Home is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 97 registered maximum number of service users is 19.4. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 19.4 = 0.103

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
