Old Gates is situated in the peaceful residential area of Feniscowles in Blackburn. It is a warm, welcoming purpose built care home with 90 beds, offering residential, nursing and nursing dementia care.

The home has a number of smaller, welcoming households with sitting rooms, space for Residents to pursue their hobbies and interests and lovely dining rooms.

The beautiful landscaped garden and patio is the perfect spot to spend time with friends and family, and is happily looked after by some of the home's Residents.

The bright, comfortable bedrooms and living areas are all easily accessible by wheelchair.

I like this home. I get cigarettes and whiskey, am looked after. Staff are kind. I have television, friends and chart. I am content.

The facility is fit for purpose. The staff is first class. The only problem for me is that the other residents on my unit all suffer forms of dementia. The only people I can have a discussion with are the staff. The unit I am on is classed as residential. I know this is due to the rapid increase in
dementia patients. Other than this I do not have any complaints.

My father has been a resident of Old Gates since November 2019 last year. He is being well looked after by staff and I like the fact that, as it is a nursing home, there are nurses on duty. Staff are good and always attending to the needs of the residents. I like the activities afternoon (today, Thursday)
and the activities co-ordinator is good fun with the residents.

Medically and care wise, very good. The only issue is the lack of time mum is out of bed. Sometimes, a whole week goes by and she remains bed-bound. I know it requires 2 people and the hoist, but Mum is low maintenance once in her chair. Sometimes her room is untidy.

My mother took residence at Old Gates after suffering a fall at her previous Care Home. I would recommend Old Gates in a heartbeat. My Mother suffered with vascular dementia along with other ailments. The care could not have been better. Right from our first visit we were welcomed at reception and shown
throughout. All staff were lovely having a smashing rapport with the residents. Food is smashing and it is planned for each individual although my mother was there for only a few months I couldn't recommend this Care/Nursing Home enough. We visited a number of Care homes and Old Gates stood out by a Country mile. The Home is light and airy with a lovely atmosphere for the residents. The end of life Care for my Mother was exemplary, caring but sensitive to the family's needs at what was/is a very difficult time. All of the standards we found are met if not higher than required by a dedicated team of Nurses and Carers. Well done and thank you to each and every one.

The care my Dad has received in Rowan ward has been excellent, personal care, food etc. It can be difficult for the staff to cope in all situations but I have never seen any of them lose patience with some very challenging behaviours. This includes my Dad from time to time. The laundry and activities
complement the care.

My father stayed here for a short time on Holly unit. The care my dad received was brilliant he was made welcome by the staff the room was really nice and he was very comfortable and enjoyed his stay and time here.

From our initial visit, with eldest son and daughter, on admission day and the week following, my mind has been put at rest that I have now found a home that will care for my husband to the best of their ability.
The downward spiral in his health and mobility has been almost impossible for me to manage
at home and the decision was not an easy one for the family. My mind is now at rest and I know that I could not have found a more caring, safe and friendly environment where the resident's needs are paramount.

Service, care, facilities, professionalism, attitude - second to none.
As a pastor I see a lot of care/nursing homes - Old Gates is the best of all.
The staff whether due to training or natural capacity, are the most caring, most polite, most excellent I have ever seen.

Introducing Helen Holden Home Manager at Old Gates Care Home, Blackburn


Helen is an experienced home manager with over 25 years of experience in caring for the elderly. Helen has been the manager at Old Gates since 2019 and loves supporting and caring for residents in the home.


She uses her knowledge and experience to motivate her team to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


She enjoys working with her colleagues and being a relaxed and proactive manager who motivates others to be the best they can be. She also has a special interest in caring for those living with dementia.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Helen said:


“The best part of my job is the variety and knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life.”


Helen has 4 children, 2 stepsons and 11 grandchildren and regards bringing up her family alongside her career as her biggest achievement!


Outside of work Helen enjoys getting out into the fresh air and likes to travel and explore new places.
