Old Gates is situated in the peaceful residential area of Feniscowles in Blackburn. It is a warm, welcoming purpose built care home with 90 beds, offering residential, nursing and nursing dementia care.

The home has a number of smaller, welcoming households with sitting rooms, space for Residents to pursue their hobbies and interests and lovely dining rooms.

The beautiful landscaped garden and patio is the perfect spot to spend time with friends and family, and is happily looked after by some of the home's Residents.

The bright, comfortable bedrooms and living areas are all easily accessible by wheelchair.

Mum is settled and happy here, therefore I am happy.
The home always listens to any concerns and rectifies any problems that may arise.
Staff are so lovely, friendly and kind and Mum's main carer goes the extra mile for Mum and family.
I would like a room here myself.

The very nature of the residents means this home is difficult. People are distressed. The staff seem caring and do care. I only visit once a week but the staff know my name.

Under the circumstances, acceptable experience.


My sister has been well looked after and treated with dignity. Acceptable food. In need of redecoration but clean. She feels safe and nothing is too much trouble.

My experience is that the overall care depends on the staff on duty.
We have received good quality care but also poor care.
More attention to detail is needed with some staff members. Minimum and careless attendance is not acceptable.

Since my mum arrived here in Jan 2018, I have had no concerns or issues around her care.
She has come on leaps and bounds with eating, drinking, mobility and is her happy, confused self once again.
The staff are all lovely, professional and always let the family know what mum has been up to, good
or bad.
The home is welcoming, a friendly atmosphere.
I couldn't think of a better place for mum to live.

A nice clean home with plenty of helpful and polite staff. My Mum commented that the unit is usually short staffed on nights. My mum also said that there is not enough choice when it comes to diabetic puddings and afternoon tea. There is always plenty of good activities on, which is really good.

We will look into your Mother’s comments about staffing shortages at night; we believe we are not currently short of staff but we accept that there are less staff around at this time of the day. Please be assured we will monitor this closely. There has been some confusion about diabetic puddings since we have implemented the HC-One menu. At HC-One we ensure that all our puddings are suitable for our diabetic Residents. We will ensure this is communicated to all staff immediately. We will look to review our afternoon tea service with this in mind.

My grandmother has been here for over 12 months and we are very happy with the care she receives. Staff work very hard and are friendly and helpful. My grandmother enjoys the food and there are plenty of choices! The activities are very good and the staff really encourage the residents to get involved.
Overall this is a lovely, clean, friendly home.

My uncle came into Old Gates Care Home 18 months ago he lives in Cherry Unit I visit my uncle every day during this time I can honestly say that the staff are very caring treating each resident with dignity and respect and maintain happiness throughout the whole, friendly faces to greet you on entering
the home by the reception staff. The management is very caring and understanding always listen to points of view and act very respectfully to ensure resident and family are happy in their care. What I like about a nursing and residential home is that there is always a qualified nurse on duty at all times in the home and regular GP visits, also a massive praise to activity, laundry, domestics, kitchen and maintenance staff who are all doing a great job. My uncle is very happy and comfortable here at Old Gates Care Home and is happy to spend the rest of his life here, thanks to a wonderful team.

Although my father was only resident in Old Gates Care Home for just less than two weeks, we found his care here excellent and always professional. The nursing staff made sure he was always comfortable and listened to our views. He was cared for with care and compassion in all aspects.

Introducing Helen Holden Home Manager at Old Gates Care Home, Blackburn


Helen is an experienced home manager with over 25 years of experience in caring for the elderly. Helen has been the manager at Old Gates since 2019 and loves supporting and caring for residents in the home.


She uses her knowledge and experience to motivate her team to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


She enjoys working with her colleagues and being a relaxed and proactive manager who motivates others to be the best they can be. She also has a special interest in caring for those living with dementia.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Helen said:


“The best part of my job is the variety and knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life.”


Helen has 4 children, 2 stepsons and 11 grandchildren and regards bringing up her family alongside her career as her biggest achievement!


Outside of work Helen enjoys getting out into the fresh air and likes to travel and explore new places.
