Old Gates is situated in the peaceful residential area of Feniscowles in Blackburn. It is a warm, welcoming purpose built care home with 90 beds, offering residential, nursing and nursing dementia care.

The home has a number of smaller, welcoming households with sitting rooms, space for Residents to pursue their hobbies and interests and lovely dining rooms.

The beautiful landscaped garden and patio is the perfect spot to spend time with friends and family, and is happily looked after by some of the home's Residents.

The bright, comfortable bedrooms and living areas are all easily accessible by wheelchair.

On each of my visits to administer Holly Communion I have found the staff very courteous and helpful. I have ticked the boxes below that I feel I can comment on, all others out of my experience range I have left blank.

We want to thank all the staff for the care, kindness and dignity they gave my Dad while he was at Old Gates, nothing was to much trouble. The staff were so thoughtful to my mum when we knew Dad didn't have long to live, always keeping us informed daily. We would recommend Old Gates to anyone looking

As a temporary resident for respite care following hospitalisation and operation, all my personal needs were provided. The staff were attentive and helpful at all times. There was plenty of interaction and involvement in activities, as well as being left to rest fully when needed.

My dear mother moved here in mid January 2016. She resides in the nursing unit named Holly. Her general well being has improved way beyond my expectations as she was classed as being end of life prior to admission. Her food intake is now good, where as before she was eating next to nothing. Her room
is excellent even though my mum does not recognise her surroundings. She is now able to walk a reasonable distance with help of 2 carers. The management and staff are lovely and easy to talk to, in order to explain my mums needs and wishes. All in all a very professional organisation.

I welcome this opportunity to thank you. I visit a friend monthly both as a friend and contact from Parish Church. She is on the Rowan Unit. She is very well cared for,t he staff are always kind to her and welcoming to me. It is a busy unit where the ladies and gentlemen need constant care, and everything
done for them. The staff speak to them kindly respecting them. The unit and my friends room are always kept clean and tidy. I cannot speak highly enough of this wonderful home. The food is good (I fed my friend lunch one day, was there last week when she was been fed little bits of éclair) The staff are angels.

Introducing Helen Holden Home Manager at Old Gates Care Home, Blackburn


Helen is an experienced home manager with over 25 years of experience in caring for the elderly. Helen has been the manager at Old Gates since 2019 and loves supporting and caring for residents in the home.


She uses her knowledge and experience to motivate her team to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


She enjoys working with her colleagues and being a relaxed and proactive manager who motivates others to be the best they can be. She also has a special interest in caring for those living with dementia.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Helen said:


“The best part of my job is the variety and knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life.”


Helen has 4 children, 2 stepsons and 11 grandchildren and regards bringing up her family alongside her career as her biggest achievement!


Outside of work Helen enjoys getting out into the fresh air and likes to travel and explore new places.
