I am able to visit my mum after not seeing her since VE Day last year 2020. It's been a horrendous year for both the care home and my own family in lockdown through the pandemic. When I first received the call to visit Mum, I was excited and apprehensive about how my mum looked after a year, how she
coped with the virus lockdown. No need to worry; Mum recognised me straight away smiling. The home had looked after her and kept her safe. Her hair was long, needing a good cut, like all of us needing the hairdresser. Activity to afternoon teas had to stop. Mum seems happy, she's looked after, safe, quality of life maximised, given her health problems.

Since Mum became a resident at Balmoral in September 2019, we have been generally happy with the care and facilities provided. Mum appeared to settle in reasonably well, and whenever there's been a problem, ie, medical, we've always been contacted promptly. We have found the staff friendly, helpful
and courteous, and we have never had a reason to complain about her care or treatment.

All the staff are so kind, caring and professional. The care they gave my mum especially in her final weeks was exceptional. They provided a high level of support for the family also.
Nothing is too much trouble for them and I cannot praise the care home enough.
Thank you to all the staff.

The care home went out of their way to provide a solution for me to see my mother at short notice. All staff are very kind and approachable at all times, especially the events coordinator.

My mum has been a resident at Balmoral for almost 2 years. I cannot speak highly enough about the staff and the care she continues to receive every day. My mum has dementia and struggles with all elements of day to day life but the staff have taken the time to get to know her and at all times she
is treated as an individual and with care, kindness and dignity.
During the period of disruption brought about by CV-19, staff have gone above and beyond to ensure that the residents have had access to regular and varied activities. It has been great to be able to see examples of these on the Balmoral FB Page.
The communication from Balmoral is very good and any concerns, issues or changes to my mum’s care are discussed prior to implementation. Any incidents are notified to immediately together with a plan on how to negate it happening again.
Putting my mum into residential care was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make.

I am absolutely delighted with the care my Mum received during her stay at Balmoral.
My Mum has had a tough year and has been vulnerable through her condition and illness, I am so happy that she was in such good hands as we were in times of this virus that prevented any of us seeing her.
So Balmoral
gave us our own Facebook page it was wonderful to have access and see how my Mum was doing throughout the course of the day.
I saw her with a friend in every photo which comforted us and as they laughed ate and had craft and art exercises we could see the stimulation and care provided.
We saw photos of my Mum joining a cookery demo of tasting delicious snacks.
The craftwork was a card that she made for us all with the team.
My Mum is a lady who before she was unwell loved art and cookery and was always very creative.
She cried when she left as I know she loved it - She told me and I know that this has rehabilitated my Mum to navigate the changes she has faced this last year.

I had my first zoom call with my nanan who I haven't seen since my birthday on the 8th march so it was so lovely to see her again after all this time and she got to meet her second grand child for the first time. Unfortunately my other daughter was upstairs at the time of the call. The staff were really
great as this was their very first zoom call, a few complications on both ends trying to work out how the video and sound worked.
They helped my nanan to work the zoom call and to see us properly as technology and my nan don't really mix. They stood by her and helped her remember her activities through the day until she told the staff she was hungry and wanted to get off. It's really nice to know that she has put weight on since being there, where as at home she would barely eat anything and was also very lonely, she eats more in the day now than I've ever seen her eat in a full week. The staff keep her occupied, someone to chat to and she also gets involved in all the activities.

The staff at Balmoral are very friendly and they can't do enough to help especially with the Situation with Covid-19. The staff at Balmoral are very caring individuals and you can see how much they care for the residents. They put together a Zoom meeting for my family and Mum, so we could see and speak
to her, and they did a excellent job. I am very happy that Balmoral is the right residential home for Mum, I wouldn't have her anywhere else, and I know that Mum is happy there. Thank you to Balmoral care staff.

Can't rate this care home enough. So friendly and caring people. Mum loves it. She was so ill, lost loads of weight, and very depressed before she went in. Now she has put weight on, so much happier and better in health. Can't thank the carers enough for what they have done and continue to do. Thank
you!

Mother in Law was in Balmoral and was looked after well. When it was her birthday, staff organised a party with entertainment and cakes. "Great". So when my wife developed dementia and the home she was designated to couldn't give her 24/7 attention, we decided on Balmoral, knowing they would look after
her well.

I have chosen to pass on my thoughts on Balmoral Care Home, in a period where the Covid-19 virus was running riot throughout care homes across the UK.
Balmoral staff had kept our family up to date throughout this unprecedented period, squashing any negative reports on PPE and what was happening in
the home. The home manager phoned me personally to inform me that the home did and still does have a stockpile of PPE for both staff and residents.
My father is fragile, and if he has had any mishap, no matter how small or large I get a phone call explaining the incident and the procedures the care staff have taken, which is very reassuring that you know that the staff has Dad’s welfare as their main priority.
The home has still carried out lots of activities throughout this period and tried to let the residents socially mix where possible at mealtimes. This is probably the only time he wants to see others as he tends to stay in his room. The home opened a Facebook page as well.

Thank you to all the care staff for looking after our mam, especially during the lockdown. Unfortunately, mam contracted the Coronavirus and was then admitted into hospital, she was one of the lucky one’s going back to Balmoral. We can’t praise the staff enough for the love and care she receives from
them all. Mam can’t speak due to a brain stroke, but she had the biggest smile on her face when she saw all the care staff. Special thanks to a certain member of staff who called me to say we could all go and see our mam on VE Day in an outside area, keeping to the strict two metre distance. This was the first time we’ve seen Mam since the second week in March. She looked better than we expected and gave us the thumbs up. A big thank you to all the team.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.869)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.869) out of 10 for Balmoral Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.598 for Balmoral Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 92 Ratings = 4.598

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.271 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Balmoral Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 17 = 0.471

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Lesley Christian

Job Title: Home Manager at Balmoral Care Home, Sheffield

Since a young age Lesley has been passionate about helping others. With her kind and helpful nature, it was evident a career in care was perfect for her.
