My relative and I are very fortunate to have staff at Balmoral that are kind and sociable to us as visitors and have a very good rapport with my relative. I am pleased to say that our relative seems settled and happy regarding the care received.
Sadly though, over the past 12 months, I have seen
a lot of staff changes that, if I'm honest, has worried me. I understand staffing changes happen for a number of reasons, but there seems to be fewer staff available when we visit and they are not always available to share general information. More concern is that sometimes it has taken a visit from us as relatives, to notice things that require a member of staff's attention. Thankfully, any concerns that we have noticed have been dealt with swiftly and thoroughly.

I would recommend this care provider to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment as I understand how difficult it is to decide where to place a loved one if they can no longer look after themselves and could be putting themselves in harm's way. The care/support they receive is excellent,
nothing is ever too much, they go above and beyond the call of duty. They are treated with dignity and the staff always have time to chat and take care of the residents' needs. From what I've seen of the rooms, they vary in size and style, some have ensuites and some are without. Overall the rooms are clean and are furnished with everything you could possibly need but you are free to make it more personal and hang family photographs, etc. There is a large dining room where meals are eaten, there are always a couple of options. You can see what activities are planned for the week on the wall in reception. Safety and security are very high. Staff exceptional amid Covid-19 pandemic.

My Mum went into Balmoral Care Home 21-months ago after suffering a Hemorrhagic stroke and spending some months in the hospital. She now has limited memory and doesn't really understand her environment. She is consequently in the dementia ward of the care home, it is an awful time when you are trying
to come to terms with what has happened to your loved one, and you want to be sure you are getting them the best care you can. On my first visit to Balmoral, my impressions were that the decor was a little tired, but the staff seemed great. Having thought about this for a while, I realised that the most important thing is that the staff that look after Mum and care about her, well I can assure you that every member of staff I have come into contact with at Balmoral have been absolutely amazing, so much so, that I class many of them as family friends. They really are an outstanding team, and they deserve every bit of praise I can give, especially in these unprecedented times. Thank you all.

The staff at Balmoral Care home in Sheffield have gone above and beyond to do the utmost for my gran. They are very friendly and can't do enough for the residents. They all work tirelessly to give the care I would expect for my gran as she is my world. They have plenty of entertainment including games,
art sing-alongs. I cannot thank them enough for what they do and the hardships they face. I highly recommend Balmoral Care Home in Sheffield.

Although Balmoral Care Home is my only experience of care for a relative, I am confident that mum could not have received better care elsewhere.
Management have cooperated with external support services such as DOLS, NHS, Social workers etc.
The care staff are extremely friendly and compassionate
in view of mums demanding needs.
All requests from family have been met, within the bounds of H & S policies, especially allowing to have her budgies in her room and feeding them where necessary.
Being able to use the kitchen facilities freely, whilst visiting is greatly valued as this, indeed is her home.

We cannot recommend Balmoral Care Home enough. The care, dedication and sheer hard work shown by all the staff is superb. Our mother was a resident in Balmoral from September 2019 until her passing in March 2020 and we had reservations - we had read about care homes in the press. We should never
have had any qualms. From day one mum settled in and we were so happy with her care. Why had we struggled to help her when it was readily available, if only we had known. Thank you all the staff in Balmoral.

On initially picking this home for my nan we were pleased with the care however due to changes in management and a roundabout effect with staff the care has plummeted to disgraceful. The care on the dementia unit, it is frightening how understaffed and undereducated the management is in dementia care.
Heartbroken how a good home has gone down the toilet due to poor management.

To everybody in Hampton Unit. Eight months ago a heartwrenching decision was made to move Mum into Balmoral. If only I had known that this was the right decision to make, many sleepless nights would have been saved. Right from the day she moved in until the day she passed, the care, love and devotion
she received from all staff were outstanding. We, as a family, cannot thank the staff enough. The first day I left Mum I looked back with sadness and one of the residents looked at me and said don't worry, we will look after her. How right he was. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Mum went into Balmoral for respite care to cover our holidays. Whilst the staff were lovely to her, the feeling was that there were insufficient people to ensure that personal care needs were met and unacceptable wait times for being taken to the toilet. The care home was clean and the food acceptable.

On entering Balmoral Care Home you get a nice feeling about it, the kindness that greets you and the management so caring and kind. The carers are so respectful, kind and caring, the kindness they show to all residents. They are also thoughtful to all visitors and make them feel welcome. My brother
being a resident seems so happy and settled and that makes me happy and more relaxed knowing he is happily cared for.

My father appears to be very content in Balmoral - if asked and capable, I am sure that he would confirm this. He is clean, tidy, fed and watered. As he is not particularly social, the environment suits him well.
My concerns are that the fees are quite high and his income just about covers them. The
longer he lives, the more they will increase and his income will fall behind. I haven't found Social Services to be of any help and systems are incredibly difficult to understand. It would have been useful to me if FSHC had on-hand advice - they obviously deal with a number of these organizations and should be able to make the initial period of time an easier process.
I believe that the staff carry out duties with compassion, care and interest in their patients. I think the organization as a whole are perhaps less so. I understand that this is a business and must function accordingly but reacting to individual needs etc should be paramount.

The care home is clean and does not have an aroma of old peoples homes as some do. My mother's room is very small but manageable, but the furnishings are a little tired and could do with repairs or replacing.

Although my father is bed ridden and requires 24hr nursing care and has been like this for nearly 3 years, I can not comment on some of the questions below but to give just a satisfactory answer. Although I am very happy that my father is looked after well and the staff are doing a good job and are
always helpful.
The building itself is now becoming "tired" and requires attention.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.869)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.869) out of 10 for Balmoral Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.598 for Balmoral Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 92 Ratings = 4.598

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.271 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Balmoral Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 17 = 0.471

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Lesley

Lesley Christian

Job Title: Home Manager at Balmoral Care Home, Sheffield

Since a young age Lesley has been passionate about helping others. With her kind and helpful nature, it was evident a career in care was perfect for her. At the age of 16, she became a care assistant and went on to gain her NVQ Level 2 and 3. Before becoming a home manager she gained experience through roles such as a senior care assistant and a team leader. She is very proud that she has been able to help her team deliver the best care possible. A family-minded individual, Lesley spends her spare time swimming, going to family events and getting lost in a good book. Words of encouragement from Lesley for someone looking for the right home would be: “Ask yourself, is there a friendly atmosphere? Is it nice and bright? Are there lots of activities? If yes, this is good.”

“I love being able to help our residents live a fulfilled life with lots of laughter and joy.”
