  • Broomgrove Trust Nursing Home, Sheffield
As of 2023, Broomgrove has been established for 60 years. The home provides exceptionally high quality long and short-term nursing, respite and convalescent care for people of all ages who have physical disabilities or illnesses, with a specialism in palliative care.

All services are designed to meet each resident’s needs and preferences and the team believe in helping each resident to live life to the full.

Broomgrove is the only charity within Sheffield’s nursing home sector. They invest any surplus they make into further improving their buildings, facilities and services. There are no directors or shareholders and the home is managed by a board of trustees, made up of volunteers largely from the health and social care sector.

As a charity, Broomgrove subsidises the cost of routine weekly GP visits by the fantastic team from the Hollies Medical Centre. They also provide access to a physiotherapist twice weekly at no extra cost.

My dad has been a resident at Broomgrove care home since March last year. Before that, he visited regularly for respite care. Since living full time at Broomgrove my dad has transformed from a frail, vulnerable, anxious gentleman to a happy, smiley, healthy individual with a renewed lust for life. We’ve
got our dad back with his cheeky sense of humour. In his own words “there’s nothing I need” because everything he needs or wants is provided for him. Every member of staff knows him and every member of staff shows the same caring, warm, friendly and professional manner. He has access to nursing care should he need it, GP visits each week, even a dentist and optician visit the home. The enrichment activities timetable is full, varied and always with something for him to do, he even goes out on visits to local museums and concerts. The quality of the food is outstanding and is always a talking point when we see him. I would highly recommend this care home.

Rarely do superlatives such as “first-class”, “outstanding”, “excellent” and “wonderful” apply unequivocally. Broomgrove merits them and more.

Senior management are “hands-on” and always available to talk.

Broomgrove's care ethic is that everyone has a positive “can-do” attitude.

“Behind

the scenes” staff, the kitchen, laundry, the garden/DIY, the cleaning staff all contribute to an upbeat environment.

Mum was able in her last years to feel secure, content, pampered even and above all loved.

Broomgrove responded sensitively to mum’s changing needs. Flexibility was demonstrated in regard to meals, outings and activities.

When mother died peacefully last week, Broomgrove provided us all with immeasurable support. Broomgrove’s dignified approach to mum’s final days was exemplary.

We would unhesitatingly recommend Broomgrove Nursing Home and can confidently say that our mother could not have wished for more in her final days. Nor could we for her.

My mother lives at Broomgrove and she has nothing but praise for the care and attention she receives and she thoroughly enjoys being a resident. She is supported by a team of staff who are capable of meeting her various needs and she takes great pleasure in the various activities on offer, the peaceful
courtyard garden, the wonderful food, and the genuinely friendly and caring atmosphere. Broomgrove is led by someone with a clear passion for the care of older people and the management team are always ready to listen to any concerns or suggestions and respond quickly. Broomgrove is well staffed, including registered nurses, and medical support is provided by an excellent GP.

My elderly mother has MS and a number of complex health needs. She was fortunate to be accepted for a respite bed to give my elderly father some relief.
The home has, without doubt, been the most caring and understanding place that I have had contact with - and my mother has had a number of experiences
in different nursing facilities over the years.
The standard of care is exceptional and the staff are caring and treat the residents with dignity and respect. Nothing has been too much trouble and they have kept me informed every step of the way. Whilst a nursing home can never replace being in your own home - this one comes as close as it gets, which is by far the best accolade.
Residents are treated like family members and not income generators. I would like to thank everyone involved at the home, from management to nursing staff and carers for looking after my mum with such care. I hope that she will be fortunate enough to be able to access the home again for future respite.

My mum was a resident in Broomgrove Nursing Home
from September 2017 until she passed away in December. I cannot thank the staff
enough for their care for mum, and for us. Their professional approach was
evident throughout her time there, and the registered nurses were brilliant in
undertaking training
for a complicated medical procedure that mum required on a
daily basis. Day and night staff were attentive, cheerful and excellent at
communicating details about mum as I live a long way from Sheffield, and the
carers are also well-trained and compassionate in their personal care of mum.
The home is very much a "home" in every way that can be created, and
all staff are welcoming and helpful. The kitchen team can be particularly
commended for catering for individual needs with consistently high standards.
The home is managed by a team who care about all of the residents personally,
and have established excellent working practices. Broomgrove really is a
wonderful nursing home.

My Dad has been a resident in Broomgrove for over 3 and half years and before that stayed for occasional respite care. He is very sick and needs a lot of care which he gets from all the staff at Broomgrove, all treat him with dignity and respect. My Mum is also elderly and not in the best of health
but she visits my Dad almost daily by taxi and she too is treated with dignity and respect and above all friendship. I always feel very welcome when I visit, everyone made a very difficult decision to put my Dad there as easy as it could be, I know he is safe and comfortable and very well looked after and if ever there is a problem I get a phone call with advice I fully trust. Everyone treats us like family when we go and we can't really ask for more than that.

There are always things going on and although Dad is totally bed bound and unable to join in the fact that it is happening adds to the overall feeling of the way Broomgrove is run.

My mother, 95, spent 3 months in hospital becoming unable to do anything for herself, she lost over a stone and became demotivated. She is very frail physically and mentally. I visited many nursing homes, Broomgrove was streaks ahead. My mother depends on me emotionally and is withdrawn, I was worried
about how she would settle in new surroundings. The support and care she received was second to none and she settled quickly. I cannot praise staff enough. On weekly visits, mum is always comfortable, clean and tidy, she has gained weight and socialises, with the staff's support and encouragement. Most importantly - she is content.

Nursing staff contact us when needed. My mother is not the easiest of old ladies and I feel staff "know her". We can live our lives and to go on holiday with complete peace of mind knowing that mum is well looked after and safe in a lovely environment which feels more like a "home" than a nursing home. I cannot praise and thank Broomgrove Nursing Home enough.

My mother was transferred to Broomgrove Nursing Home after a series of falls and was expected to die within days. She had very little movement and couldn’t feed herself, ten months later she is quite cheerful, can take steps (aided) and eats with other residents in the home! The facts alone show how
well she is being looked after. She is 99 and has always been very frightened about going in a home but she now says she is very well looked after, everyone is very kind and is happy. As a daughter, living at a distance and struggling with putting mum into a home, I can honestly say that I have had nothing but kindness, understanding and support.

We can't speak highly enough of Broomgrove. They were truly wonderful with our Gran who entered into their nursing care in a very, very frail state having profound dementia related problems and having fallen, broken her hip and had two hip replacement operations. All the staff were incredibly kind,
insightful and patient with Gran and also with us.
The facilities are wonderful with lovely activities on offer and our only wish is that Gran could have stayed longer and been at Broomgrove when she was well enough to take full advantage of everything that was on offer. At the end of life stage, the staff were incredible - wise and kind, enabling a calm, respectful and dignified end. We can't thank them all enough. This felt to us like bygone cottage - hospital style, real personal care at its absolute best.

This is an outstanding nursing home. Every single member of staff is totally dedicated to the individual needs of the residents. From the kitchen and cleaning and maintenance team through to the excellent care team, skilled nursing team and management (this includes the operational team of activity
staff to strategic team of nurse, assessor and leadership team). Thank you, doesn't seem enough, however, two simple words underpin the highest quality of care, compassionate and safe. We will always be grateful.

Our friend came to Broomgrove to convalesce for a week and ended up staying the rest of her life. The care is A*. Facilities excellent. Refreshments available for resident's guests and the chance to dine with guests. We did on New Years Day and the atmosphere was wonderful. We fully recommend Broomgrove
as a high standard care home. More like home for our friend and she enjoyed her last few years with no worries.

Our Mum, who passed away recently, had been a resident in Broomgrove for the last 18 months of her life. We were absolutely delighted with the kindness and care that every member of staff showed her throughout her stay. Nothing was ever too much trouble and the expert nursing care that was always on-hand,
made those months as comfortable as they could have been for her. We feel fortunate that Mum was able to spend the last months of her life, in such caring surroundings and we would have no hesitation in recommending Broomgrove Nursing and Convalescent Home.

Run for love, not for money, Broomgrove Nursing and Convalescent Home is a rare and precious gem. I have never met a staff member who wasn't kind, courteous and happy to be there. Rooms vary greatly in size so it's pot luck as to what is available but we hope than progression to a larger room will be
offered when possible. The courtyard garden is always 10 degrees warmer than the rest of Sheffield!

Mum made the decision to move into a Nursing Home after a long period in hospital and moved to Broomgrove in June 2016. My husband and I visited Broomgrove on the recommendation of a family friend. We knew immediately that mum would be happy and well cared for. We particularly liked the lovely sheltered
garden and knew mum would enjoy it also. There are activities every week which encourage the residents to socialise. The staff are very attentive and always make time to answer any queries I might have about mums health issues. As we live some distance away we are happy knowing that she is being extremely well cared for in a safe environment.

After a difficult year, it is such a relief to have Mum safely settled at Broomgrove. She is comfortable and well cared for - often saying how kind everyone is and how grateful she is to be there. Over the last 2 years I have found the Broomgrove Convalescent team to be highly professional and caring towards my father. They have taken the time to get to know my father and shown a sensitive ongoing commitment to getting to know my father's individual needs and improving his quality of life. Nursing
staff communicate well with relatives and are highly respectful of their residents. I would highly recommend this Nursing Home.

Mum never wanted to go into a home and it took a while for her to settle in and now she praises all the carers and the home.
The Carers are helpful, courteous, always cheerful, would do anything to help and will always have a joke with you which is very much appreciated. The food is good even though
my Mum is a picky eater they will always try and find an alternative for her if she doesn't like what they bring her. I would recommend Broomgrove to anyone.

Our experience is that mother is being cared for by a higher ratio of qualified medical staff. All hands on care she receives is capable compassionate and cheerful. We have no hesitation in recommending Broomgrove as a very high quality nursing and care home. We also admire the way the home is run commercially,
by a freestanding trust, not a multi home conglomerate.

My mother, who is 99, has been a resident at Broomgrove for two years. Having lived independently in her own home until she was 97 it was undoubtedly not easy for my mother to go into residential care. However, after a short time she settled very well thanks to the kindness and reassurance shown to
her by all the staff at Broomgrove. My mother continues to be settled, which is largely due to the attention and encouragement given by management and staff. Broomgrove engages with its residents but never invades their privacy.

Such nursing care as my mother has required has been good. She has also enjoyed taking part in Broomgrove's full calendar of activities and social events which has resulted in helping her to make friends.

A key factor in our family choosing Broomgrove is because it is a trust . The ethos of not being a profit making organisation is well reflected in the way in which Broomgrove is run.

I have been a resident at Broomgrove for about sixteen months and my family and I are well content. Of course, the premises are spotless, the food is pleasant, the activities are varied but the true ethos of the home is embodied in the staff. One expects nurses and carers to be competent, caring and,
hopefully, friendly and this they are here to a high degree, but their duties would be hindered without a host of support staff who themselves display just those qualities. So if you need a nursing home and the opportunity arises apply here.

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.250)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.250) out of 10 for Broomgrove Trust Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.875 for Broomgrove Trust Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (21 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 4.875

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.375 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Broomgrove Trust Nursing Home is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.25

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
