Mum was placed into care at Ashcroft i January. The hardest decision we have had to make.
Ashcroft have made this a lot easier as the staff are warm and friendly and although mum may sometimes be distressed the staff look after her with kindness and compassion. On the whole even though mum has dementia
she seems happy and everyone likes her. Thank you to all the staff for your compassion and kindness.

My mum has been a resident of Ashcroft since May 24, she settled in really quickly due to the kindness of the staff, the lovely home baked food and endless cups of tea. Mum joins in the activities when she can being chair exercises with the lovely carers, and likes doing word search books and reading
especially back in the day memory books. Her room is clean, bright and light. The staff work extremely hard and are kind caring and respectful with residents and visitors.

I highly recommend Ashcroft. Before my mum was admitted to Ashcroft we was in the process of looking for a care home as her Alzheimer's was getting to the stage where she was becoming vulnerable and she was not safe. She lived alone with regular family visits. However over Dec there were a snow fall
and she had a fall. Luckily she was ok but had to stay in hospital for a few days while she was checked over. At this point the nurses would not let her return home by herself. This is when she was placed in Ashcroft nursing home. As a son who lives overseas it was very difficult to know that her freedom had been taken away, however on the other hand I know that she is safe, looked after. Well fed and looks happy. I have regular video calls with her. I get to speak with the staff and managers who all are very nice and caring.

Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing Home

The home manager and staff make every effort to provide a person-cantered approach in the care we deliver. This includes family involvement, connections and communication to loved ones, near or far. We support our customers to access The Social Hub to facilitate regular video calls and continue to have meaningful connections with their families. It as been a real pleasure to support both you and your mum to continue to engage in meaningful connections. Thank you for your feedback, I will certainly share it within the organisation.

My mum stayed at Ashcroft for two weeks of immediate care following a hospital admission. The manager and his team were welcoming to me and my mum and were all extremely dedicated and professional. The home itself is basic but adequate. During the time she was there, I felt confident that she was safe,
well looked after and well-fed. Thank you all.

My mum, like others, had property go missing on numerous occasions. The staff said that they would look into it but nothing was ever replaced. There was never enough staff. Lots of staff left during the time mum was there. They were slated in the latest CQC report which came as no surprise.

Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to leave us with your feedback. We welcome feedback as this helps the home to continue to deliver caring, safe, effective, responsive and well-managed care for all at Ashcroft Nursing Home.
The home has a simplified complaints policy that is displayed in the entrance. However, there is no evidence of you bringing this to the attention of the home. If this had been the case, the home would have acted promptly to try and resolve the issue immediately.
The staff levels are based on the service users' needs and not the number of service users at the home. Staff are always on hand to help when needed.
As a learning organisation, we feel it is vitally important to invest in staff, to aid in their development and gain new skills. Whilst it may be selfish to want staff to stay working at the home, we are very proud to help staff in their development, so that it leads to other opportunities within the care sector.
Thank you for your feedback.

My mum passed away on the 23rd February 2023 after spending two very happy years at Ashcroft.
Mum had dementia and in the last six months breast cancer and skin cancer during the whole time, the staff were so loving and caring towards Mum and my whole family. This made me feel content knowing she
was safe in their care.
During her time here lots of improvements have been made, the bedrooms decorated and new furniture, the conservatory rebuild. but most of all the ongoing well-being of the residents.
I would recommend Ashcroft to anyone looking for a place where your loved one is cared for with dignity to the very end of their life.
I will always feel part of the Ashcroft family as they are helping me through this sad time

Mum went to Ashcroft initially for respite then had a fall which resulted in 2 broken arms, this meant mum had an extended stay of 6 weeks. Mum enjoyed her stay so much she requested to remain at Ashcroft on a permanent basis. All staff are very caring and compassionate and look after mum's needs extremely
well.

All the staff are so very caring and go out of their way to make my mum feel special and wanted. I am very pleased and happy with the care she receives and would highly recommend this care home for anyone that needs 24hr care.
My mum is so much happier and brighter since we moved here in and I can
rest easy knowing that she is in safe hands and well looked after. Staff are very approachable and caring and will go out of their way to make families welcome when you choose to visit. visiting times are exceptional and can visit anytime as long as meal times are protected for just the residents.
My mum can be quite difficult in her mannerisms due to her illness but the staff manage fantastically well with her. The building is very modern and has been recently renovated to a high standard.

The staff took my mum's coat for safekeeping as she wore it every morning. It then went missing. I was told they would pay for a new one. When winter coats were available this is now not true, other items went missing including a pair of £60 shoes. If they can not look after possessions how can they
look after our loved ones. Also, they will not provide me with the address/email for the head office, a right I have by law.

Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing Home

We specialise in dementia and have trained staff to meet the sensitive needs of challenging behaviour. Staff work in a person-centred way to support individual residents and therefore staff will have assessed and risk-managed your mum's wish to wear her coat throughout the day as this provided her comfort and a sense of security. As your Mum wearing her coat did not present as a challenge to herself or others there would have not been a need to take your mum's coat for her safekeeping. The missing items were allegedly missing in 2020 and there is no evidence of a conversation taking place of you bringing the missing coat and shoes to the home's attention, nor is there any evidence of a conversation of any payment for a new one. The home has a simplified complaints policy that is displayed at the entrance that clearly states the director's contact details. The home manager has endeavoured to contact you on several occasions by both phone and post in relation to this matter with no response.

My brother is happy in the care home. The staff talk to him on a personal level and appear to care about how he is. The public, shared areas, are clean and tidy. Drinks are available on a self-help basis as required. My brother says he enjoys his meals.

Please mind your loved ones in this home and ensure they are getting adequate attention to cleanliness and hygiene and medical care that they deserve. Sadly I have seen many good staff leave over the last 6 months and now there never seems to be enough staff on duty to cope with the number of residents
in this home. It has been heartbreaking to witness kind staff being overworked and stressed out trying to cope with residents with severe dementia upsetting others as they are all in the same communal room as those with slight dementia.
Over the past 6 months, I have also witnessed the quality of care deteriorate alarmingly whilst more attention has been given to renovating the building.
Staff struggling to multitask by filling out lots of paperwork and files whilst trying to mind residents, not enough cleaners for a residence this size. I have to ask myself are the directors cutting corners to make more money? Where has the "care" to residents and good staff disappeared to?

Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing Home

The Manager finds your review to be an unfair representation of the Home and a contradiction to the feedback given by your siblings, regarding the care that was delivered to your loved one. The home undertakes a staffing level matrix which is based on our customer's needs and the Home has adequate staffing levels to meet the needs of our customers and this helps us to deliver safe care. The renovations of the building are essential in providing quality care in a safe and well-maintained environment. The renovations do not impact on the quality of care that is delivered at the home and I find these words to be unwarranted. The home regularly seeks feedback from visiting Multidisciplinary professionals, staff, customers and families who have reported positive feedback regarding the quality of care and cleanliness of the environment. Due to confidentiality and data protection, I am open to inviting you to make an appointment to discuss this further and I look forward to speaking to you.

Some staff are excellent, some poor. My mum has a number of issues, advance stage dementia, nursing needs and general old age. The staff/management haven't understood and listened to me and my sister about Mum's diet and her other issues. The room is below standard not completely clean and the furniture
is abysmal. They do not clean my mum as I would like, she has frequently dirty hands, feet from faeces. But Mum seems happy but does need a lot of improvement and staff.

Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing Home

Thank you for leaving your comments. Despite having many positive conversations with you and other members of your family regarding your loved one. The home finds your comment “The staff/management haven't understood and listened to me and my sister about Mum's diet and her other issues” unwarranted. The home welcomes input from families to be a part of their loved one's care planning and we endeavour to take on board all the information to help us deliver safe, effective care. You have personally been involved in conversations with the Home and multidisciplinary teams regarding your loved one's care. The Hotel Services staff work very hard and all rooms are cleaned daily.

Fabulous carers and nursing staff, cannot fault the care given to my mum. Management on the other hand not so good, manager not around enough, always outside chatting to workmen. Felt that money should be spent on more carers, always short-staffed and agency workers on-site who do not know my mum. Owner
was very very rude to my mum, unplugging things and moving things around for what he said were health and safety reasons! He needs to take another look. Cleaning was disgraceful, I cleaned my mum's room myself on a weekly basis. Meals were very basic, didn't cater for my mum's disability. I brought in sandwiches from home. I washed most of my mum's clothes and bedding. Maybe not spend money on a massive red hot conservatory but update resident rooms instead, curtains and bedding very dated. I had to buy incontinence pads for my mum as the manager didn't have the right ones. I was asked to buy a harness for the hoist for my mum and we had to buy our own wheelchair as there wasn't one to use.

Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing Home

Dear Amanda, the home has a duty of care to ensure that residents, staff and families are protected, and their safety is promoted at all times, especially during times of refurbishment in and around the Home.

In reference to your complaint “Owner was very very rude to my mum unplugging things and moving things around for what he said were health and safety reasons! ” The Manager has instructed all staff to remove any items deemed to be breaching fire safety, infection control or health and safety regulations. The Home has a duty of care to ensure the entire environment is compliant with all regulations and legislation. The health and safety of staff, visitors and customers are paramount. In addition, this type of language is completely unwarranted and therefore in contradiction to the many positive interactions we have had on many occasions. Had you taken the time to raise these concerns directly, this would have given the Manager an opportunity to resolve the issues swiftly.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.225)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.225) out of 10 for Ashcroft Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.325 for Ashcroft Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (80 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (12 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 114 Ratings = 4.325

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ashcroft Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
