Thornhill Nursing Home provides round-the-clock care in a homely environment, taking on all aspects of health and security concerns, including hygiene, nutrition and lifestyle.

Carers offer residents and their families the support they need during what many find some of the most trying times of their lives. Families are truly grateful for the personal support they receive, when faced with one of life's very difficult decisions and the team pride themselves on continuing that support to residents and their families from the moment they contact the home throughout the whole of their stay and beyond.

The approach to care is simple - look after the person and not the ailment/condition alone - Carers want to get to know their residents and their families, thus enabling them to look after the whole person and not just to concentrate on the task in hand. Staff get to know their clients, who they are, who they were and how they have come to be at the home.

Carers get to know their families too and like to understand the dynamics within the family setting and how best they can support these as they build a relationship of trust. They understand that choosing a care home is not just about excellent amenities, but about a true and real understanding of relationships being nurtured, trust being built and a life being lived. Professionals believe in true, real and honest care and keep this at the heart of their approach.

The home welcomes long stay residents but also those wanting a shorter stay, perhaps for rehabilitation or convalescence or to build confidence after a fall. Has also offered respite care and support to those suffering from nervous conditions following a break in at their home

Hill Care have are well respected in the North of England for a homely range of care accommodations that incorporate the latest sector technology and recognised good practice.

My mother-in-law was cared for and treated with the greatest of dignity, care and compassion during her short stay, by each and every one of the staff.
At a very difficult time, it was comforting to know that the care she was given helped us greatly until she sadly passed away.

Also, the concern

and support given to us the relatives was very much appreciated.

Many thanks for everything you did, we will always be grateful.

My friend has settled really well at Thornhill Nursing Home. The staff are pleasant and friendly.
The food is good plus a nice cup of tea. Clean and comfortable.

When my husband was admitted, the staff put me at ease as it was a very traumatic experience for myself and family.

The first room I was shown to had very old fashioned furniture and appeared dingy. It (no. 24) needs refurbishing. I was offered next door, with much better furniture and pleasant. Staff were mainly pleasant and all fulfilled all requests (except for one v unpleasant kitchen employee who was cross
when I expected my tea and toast to come sooner than 1 1/4 hours after I had ordered it. This was immediately remedied when I spoke to a senior carer about it). Overall the facilities and service are good, except that when one buzzes for help it is quite often a long time before anyone comes (15 minutes not unexceptional) and take-over times (morning and evening) there often seems to be no help available for 30 minutes.

When my wife arrived here she was in the grip of a delirium but the staff gradually got her out of it with kindness and she is now fully rational and back to her old self.

The staff are very good and work extremely hard to ensure my father has the best possible care. My only concern is there are not enough cleaners employed and the level of cleaning is poor.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.400)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.400) out of 10 for Thornhill Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.500 for Thornhill Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (63 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.5

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Thornhill Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
