Elmwood practises personalised nursing and residential care for a number of requirements, including palliative care, convalescence and respite provision.

They want their residents to enjoy their time at Elmwood. Whether they’re coming to recover from an operation or to begin living among them, they are there to offer genuine friendship and a high standard of care.

This extensively refurbished facility features mature landscaped gardens, en-suite bedrooms and versatile social areas for a positive and comfortable lifestyle. Though homely, great attention has been paid to the health and security of the home.

Mealtimes are an important part of the day, with menus prepared by an experienced chef and consisting of fresh and seasonal produce.

The care philosophy includes support for an active lifestyle, with an activities co-ordinator getting to know each resident’s hobbies and interests and organising many social occasions and outings.

Mum's total lack of mobility and dementia meant she could no longer live in her own home. The care and attention she has received since going into Elmwood made the transition between her own home/hospital and care home much easier and acceptable to her. In these difficult times of limited visits, we
have always found the staff to be very helpful in a professional and friendly manner to ensure the visit goes well. Mum is enjoying the activities provided at Elmwood and has welcomed the opportunity to meet other residents in the lounge and out in the garden, which is encouraged by the care staff. The care staff are looking after her extremely well from both a health and wellbeing aspect. Mum enjoys the interaction with the staff, and she tells us the food is lovely. We could not wish for her to be in a better place; she now seems to be enjoying life.

My mother had a stroke in February 2006 and had to go into care. After three different care homes, we found Elmwood. This home has been my family’s savour. The current manager and staff are absolutely wonderful, caring and accommodating, nothing is beyond their remit.

Having moved our mum here a few months ago from another care home, we were worried that she wouldn't settle in. How wrong could we be. The care and attention is faultless, and although it has been a difficult time for visiting, the worry about her well-being has been lifted. Thank you Elmwood.

My wife became a resident four years ago. She was the victim of a catastrophic stroke and a long-time sufferer of Parkinsons disease. The nursing care, love and attention she received from all staff has been second to none. I cannot thank the Elmwood staff enough for making my wife's stay with them
as comfortable as it has possible to have been.

Elmwood was my first choice when it came to choosing a care home for my sister. I had visited before lockdown and the staff were welcoming and professional. Everyone was so friendly and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The residents were always clean and treated with dignity and respect. We were
obviously very concerned about the lockdown, however, I haven't been disappointed. All the staff have gone above and beyond to look after my sister and the other residents with lots of activities on offer, but with safety being first and foremost with any decisions made. My sister has settled so well and I can't thank everyone enough.

Under extreme pressures and uncertainty Elmwood has continued to provide exceptional care for my grandma. We haven't had to worry about her care or wellbeing as Elmwood has always kept us informed and reassured with the wonderful security it gives to her and to us. She is so happy and living there is
still a joy for her. Whatever is happening in the world her wellbeing is always paramount to them. Thank you so much for the reassurance you continue to provide to us.

My wife's cousin was a Christian and regularly visited care homes. She saw many. She chose this nursing home herself. Ultimately she suffered 2 massive strokes and eventually was on 'care for life'. Instead of 48 hours, she lasted many days. All the staff were superb and the care and devotion were excellent.

We have nothing but praise for the Care Manager and her fantastic team in the 6-months that my mother has been a resident. Nothing is too much trouble, and my mother is treated like 'one of the family' which has been so important during the Coronavirus epidemic when it has not been possible to see our
mother face-to-face for many months now.
All the staff have been vigilant in keeping all the residents safe and have remained extremely positive and upbeat despite now having to wear full PPE. They were one of the first care homes in the country to push for Covid-19 testing of all the residents and staff, which is applauded.
I can't speak more highly of how wonderful Elmwood is. My mother had been in two previous care homes down south before moving back to Leeds, and neither was a patch on what Elmwood offers.
My mother is happy and comfortable, which gives us so much comfort during these challenging times. The group should be very proud of the Elmwood team. Thank you.

Mum has been in several care homes, living for an extended period in three of them, with Elmwood being 'home' for over three years now.
Without doubt - Elmwood has been and continues to be by far the best place Mum has lived.
This is because Elmwood has a dedicated team of people who do actually care
about the people they look after.
There are too many individuals to single out as special, all I can say on Mum's behalf - is thank you to each and every one of you for your genuine care (which has not wavered during these last difficult months) and ongoing hard work in looking after all your residents to the very best of your abilities.

An excellent care home. From the first day, my mother was treated with respect and dignity. Elmwood staff and management have gone out of their way to ensure that all of my mother's needs are met. The staff are courteous, friendly and caring. They are compassionate, attentive and highly professional.

Mum had a wonderful 94th birthday thanks to the hardworking staff's thoughtful and generous provision of decorations, refreshments and lovely birthday cake. Mum is being very well cared for, we are four generations of family, we were able to relax together with peace of mind, to celebrate.

We as a family are very pleased with mum's care. The staff are very caring indeed as are the management. Mum is very content here and so are we knowing she is in good hands.

My mother has been in this care home since November 2017. She sadly passed away this month, but the care and compassion the staff gave mother and the family were excellent. The staff and management were so friendly and approachable.

Things here continue to impress, it all appears to run with a high degree of customer satisfaction, particularly as far as the residents within are concerned. Attention to detail is paramount. I have been staying here to recuperate (post hospital) for over two weeks I have received the kindest attention from all the staff. Kind smiles from all well appreciated. I was at first a nervous patient but found it a please experience, nothing was too much trouble.

The key to any nursing home, in my opinion, is its staff. Ultimately their individual care, empathy and skills will impact the life of the residents more than any other single area. The staff at Elmwood possess these qualities. Friendly, caring and respectful toward their charges.


I asked my mother

when she was able to speak, if she felt cared for - possibly the most important question for me as her son, she replied that she did. It is this care by the staff, in all its forms, I believe has kept my mother alive and well 2 years longer than the GP's expectations when she first arrived at Elmwood. The facilities are good, cleanliness excellent but the staff from the reception to the social host to all nursing staff and care assistants are what make Elmwood.

My mother first entered Elmwood having to be hoisted to do anything. My family members and I truly thought this was going to be a very confusing and short existence. It has turned out to be the exact opposite. Our mother is now (albeit very limited) able to manoeuvre herself unaided under watchful eyes.
We truly believe this improvement is due to the level and quality of care given at Elmwood.
P.S The food is fantastic.

Tom Carter

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2022

Having a passion when it comes to healthcare, my background is built on Operational NHS Community Service Management. My experience from these roles includes service improvement projects to streamline Community Services, renovating Child Development Centres through to commissioning new therapy rehab programmes. I made the change to Bupa care services to enable a more focused improvement approach with the aim of providing the highest quality care to our residents' whilst promoting independence and dignity in a setting that can be enjoyed by everyone.


My appreciation of this role comes from the improvements we can provide for residents, and equally their families lives. Providing a safe engaging environment where residents can be themselves alongside visits from their loved ones helps us achieve a home away from home setting here at Elmwood.


I commute daily from Brighouse and spend my spare time with my fiancé and Toy Poodle, Ralphie, who is well known and fondly thought of by residents. I recently adopted 6 chickens and enjoy spending my time outside when the weather permits. I also serve on the board as a Trustee for Carers Trust Mid Yorkshire in my spare time to give back and help shape the local care provision and support in my local area.

I have been a registered mental health nurse since 2016. Prior to Elmwood I worked in NHS services, including forensic wards, mental health wards, acute general medicine ward and acute older persons mental health ward. During my working career within the NHS I was able to progress to ward manager, providing leadership and management throughout the pandemic. I enjoy working in care services as making a change to someone’s life and improving quality of life is very important to me.


I am born and bred in Barnsley and have 3 children – a son, and 2 daughters. I have a cockapoo called Millie and in my spare time I enjoy walking, camping, travelling and reading. When I'm feeling creative I also love a bit of painting or crochet.

I have worked here at Bupa for 29 years. I enjoy working in the care home sector as nurturing is an element I have naturally gravitated towards; it was instilled in me from a young age by my mother. I worked in hospitality in the 70's and 80's, and subsequently came into the Bupa family many years ago - I enjoy the family dynamic here; everyone is an extension of each other and our team is all part of the foundation that keeps it running so well.


I am a mum of two and a grandma to one. I live locally to the home; just a stone's throw away from Roundhay Park and in my spare time I love learning about culture and places that proceed beyond home. I'm also a lover of soaps, you can't beat a good episode of EastEnders!
