I cannot thank nor praise staff enough for their care and dedication extended to my wife who suffers from dementia. Unfortunately she is bedbound and unable to do anything for herself, relying on staff for her meals, liquid intake and other essential functions. Sometimes I do think staff could be a
bit more proactive but readily act if a request is made to them. Dental and oral hygiene continues to be an issue.

Up and down, one minute it's ok, then the next minute it's not. Depending on my mood. It's a daunting thought that this is my life now.

The staff at the care home were amazing and devoted to looking after my late uncle.
My issue is that when he entered the care home he had to submit a £5000 deposit, this should have been refunded 28 days after we terminated the care when he died. It is now 117 days and we have not received any refund
and are unable to contact the management team that deals with refunds. I would like to warn all relatives that this appears to be a deliberate act to hold on to family's monies.

Reply from Paul Lawson, National Sales Manager at West Ridings Care Home

Thank-you very much for your review and feedback. We extend our continued and heartfelt condolences for the recent loss of your dear uncle. The refund has been paid in full into your bank account and we apologise that it took longer than expected to finalise. Thank-you for your kind comments about the staff team and we send our very best wishes to you and the family.

All staff are very friendly and have the time of day for everyone, residents and family members too. I will say the meetings that are held need to be more working hours friendly, also some units need looking into due to being mismatch. The offer of a drink would be nice. Also I must stress all staff
on Calder are amazing! The nurse could help staff more and take more time with residents while dealing with medication.

When my mum-in-law became ill and was about to be released from hospital we were extremely worried for her safety at home. So when she was offered respite at West Ridings Car Home we were relieved. She went to Calderdale unit and was instantly welcome, the staff were great and she was so happy. As visitors,
we were welcomed and became part of the group. Excellent facilities. She loves to go to the summer house for an ice lolly and to feed the fish. Many thanks all round.

My sister and I arrived at West Ridings to view a home for our mother who had a stroke and wasn't able to live on her own sadly anymore.
We arrived unannounced and were welcomed warmly by the REM who showed us around, we were so happy with what we saw, all carers were welcoming, REM saved us a room
for mum till that afternoon, as we needed to see to our mum.
Mum had been in respite here and will be staying long term, mum has a beautiful garden room, the Wharfedale unit is residential, all the carers are wonderful, Mum plays bingo, has her hair done every week, eats very well, cleaners do an excellent job, they clean the room every day, mum is happy and safe.

Having previously checked out several other Care Homes I was delighted when I came across West Ridings Care Home. The Resident Experience Manager who showed us around the Care Homes's facilities and rooms, was very welcoming, caring, considerate and understanding.
The Home itself is made up of several
single storey buildings and the rooms, garden areas and facilities are very impressive.
We were very impressed with the level of care, compassion and kindness that we received from the Resident Experience Manager and her colleagues, and so this, coupled with the high standard of the facilities at the Care Home itself, made it an easy decision to select this particular Care Home for my Father.

My mum needed care after being in hospital for five weeks and my first point of contact was with the bed manager of the home. This lady was kind, caring and genuinely concerned, she couldn't have done anything more to help our family. During the transition period, she kept in touch and made sure we
were up to date on everything that was happening. Mum was welcomed by everyone to the home, all the staff are so kind, caring and have treated Mum with dignity and respect. Mum is on the Whafedale unit at the home and nothing is too much trouble, the manager of the unit and all staff make it a happy place to stay. Thank you.

The staff in the Swaledale unit are welcoming, caring and as attentive as possible, which is commendable as they are constantly very busy. It is a comfortable place for my mother to recover after being in the hospital, she is enjoying the meals provided.
There are some minor maintenance issues with
the room, however, it is clean and comfortable with a good location and outlook to the garden.
After a couple of weeks, we have now been through my mother's care plan with the unit manager and we feel comforted that the process is well documented and the team welcomes feedback.
The site feels secure and safe requiring pre-booking for visits. However, this could be improved with an online booking system, without the need to interrupt the carers.
We recommend you review your residents and family induction procedure in your care home. This would help reassure both parties and establish a good settling in period. Adoption of online videos and calls with a greater social media presence would be welcome.

My husband has dementia, his main problem is trying to walk and does not realise he cannot, he is always trying to get from his chair. The carers have a problem with this but he gets up and falls. Constant visits to A&E but the staff do their very best and really care for him.

Staff on Airedale Unit are caring and kind. It has been difficult for everyone throughout lockdown but my Mum feels safe and well cared for. We have had issues with Mum's care and the unit manager is open to discussion and listens to our concerns. Sometimes the same issues have to be raised time and
again and there is some lack of communication between staff. Staff on the unit keep us informed if there are any problems or if Mum is ill and they are willing to work with us to ensure that she receives the right care. I feel that there is a lack of information from Advinia and from the care home manager regarding wider issues such as policies and procedures. Staff is not given information which should be cascaded down from senior management to ensure consistency. We have a good relationship with the manager and staff on the unit and they seem to genuinely care for their residents and often go the extra mile which we as a family really appreciate.

Reply from David Martins, National Sales Manager at West Ridings Care Home

Thank you for your kind words regarding the team on Airedale and that your mum is well cared for. We will endeavour to review the rest of the information to try and make this better going forward.

My mum has recently passed away having spent the last few years of her life on Wensleydale, a specialist dementia care unit. The staff have been amazing and represent everything good about the sector. They are caring and considerate to residents, and to their families, and through their dedication and
care, regularly going the extra mile, they have made my mum's final years dignified and respectful. This has been under very difficult circumstances where staff and residents have suffered the effects of Covid-19. The team worked hard to find out Mum's likes and dislikes, which at times due to Mum's condition were challenging. Mum's key workers and other staff provided Mum with such a high standard of care, I really don't know how they go home to their families after an intensive and often highly emotional 12-hour shift to return the next day and give that consistent level of care, but they do. Staff were so kind and patient.

Each time I visit my grandma she is always so well cared for and happy due to this care home. The care that goes into the home is the best I have seen. Specifically, I would like to specially mention one member of staff who is such an amazing person and an even better employee, she is an asset to this
care home and deserves so much. She always has a laugh and a smile on her face and genuinely cares for her residents. Thank you for all you do, I do hope you see this as well as your manager.

My Dad was placed on Wensleydale residential unit, they went above and beyond to help him. The staff were great and really looked after him. Unfortunately, he really needed nursing care and had to be moved. Would recommend for your loved ones. The care home manager that took over about a month before
my Dad left was brilliant. Previous home manager was very poor.

A big thank you to all the staff on the Calderdale Unit for looking after my mum during the last weeks of her life with Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's is such a terrible disease that takes no prisoners but mum passed peacefully in a lovely setting with caring people around her. Sorry cannot answer all the

My mum has been in Swaledale since February when she was brought in from hospital. The care she has been given is exceptional, she is very well looked after. The staff are all wonderful and nothing is too much trouble, they always let you know of any changes to her care and I have to say that after
months of anxiety over my mum I am now happy to say I feel that she is getting the care she deserves in this wonderful care home. Thank you to all the staff for the wonderful job you do and how fabulous you’ve been throughout the pandemic.

Current Review Score: 8.2 (8.174)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.2 (8.174) out of 10 for West Ridings Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.152 for West Ridings Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (56 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) + (17 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 105 Ratings = 4.152

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.022 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for West Ridings Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 180 registered maximum number of service users is 36. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 36 = 0.222

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
