I am so impressed with the quality of care in St Mary's. The staff are absolutely wonderful, caring, dedicated and hard-working. My mum is very happy there and feels safe, supported and valued. Highly recommended.

What beautiful words, thank you so much, I will pass this on to the staff.

After being discharged from hospital to another care home which wasn't fit for purpose we contacted St Mary's to see if they could meet my dad's needs. From initial contact to my dad being admitted we were kept informed of everything and staff were more than welcoming answering any questions or concerns
and reassuring us that he was in safe hands. I have visited every day sometimes twice a day and no matter what time I visit Dad is always clean, tidy and comfortable. He can't recommend the staff enough saying they go "above and beyond". The carers do a difficult job with a smile, empathy and compassion. In the nicest possible way I hope it's a short stay for him but whilst he is there it's reassuring that the care he recieves is to such a high standard and that nothing we ask is ever too much trouble. Thank you genuinely doesn't seem enough.

My father was in St Mary's for approximately 14 months, before sadly passing away on the 27th of April 2024.
Whilst in St Mary's he was treated with dignity and respect, any problems that arose I was contacted by the staff anytime day or night.
The staff were always very professional and welcoming
which must be very hard at times for them whilst working in a very challenging environment.
The last few days of my dad's life were made very comfortable for him by making sure he was in no pain or agitated in any way.
After my father had passed all my questions were answered and we were treated in a very professional manner.
The staff have all been excellent and are a massive credit to St Mary's Care Home.
All I can say is a massive thanks to all of you.

Reply from Emily Manager, Manager at St Mary's Care Home

Thank you for your kind words I have passed this on to all the staff. Dad was an absolute pleasure to care for and I know the staff was very fond of him. I know the staff was also very fond of another particular person, please tell her to come and visit anytime, the staff will always gladly have the kettle on and waiting for her. Please take care of yourselves and you know where we are if you need anything at all.

My husband has been in hospital for twenty-six hours with a catheter-related UTI. Before admission into A and E, he had ongoing pressure sores to the rear and to his heel. One week later the pressure sores, particularly the one on the backside, is now deep and the skin is split open. The virtual team
was checking on him now it is down to the District Nurses and thank goodness for the District Nurses. The District nurses are not happy with the basic care of emptying catheter bags and general care. The air pressure was not on my husband's bed! My husband is in pain or discomfort every day. He is now eating better and he is being prevented from falling out of bed. However, the state of the pressure sore is unforgivable.

Can't say enough about this care home and the so friendly, caring staff. My dad sadly died yesterday, but for the few weeks he was there, the staff always put a smile on his face and kept him comfortable and well-fed.

Staff need more dementia training, they do their best, but the company have a duty of candour to provide this, and I'm sure it could be in-house training, as all dementia people are different, so should be person-centred. Bedrooms could do so with a makeover. Activity coordinator - excellent worker.

My mother was placed in St Mary's Care Home following a stay in hospital. I am so grateful for the care she has received. She's physically fitter, looks younger and is well cared for. The staff have also supported me, and I am most appreciative of it.

St Mary’s has moved under a new provider since April 21. It has proved challenging to reach an agreement with management to have an essential caregiver status but, after what seemed like a long battle, this has now thankfully been agreed. Staff continue to be very caring and responsive to Mum’s changing
needs and variable medical conditions. They continue to work through the challenges Covid presents, working hard to reduce the risks to residents. With staffing changes, there have been disruptions to activities for residents, but these have now been re-established and are varied and interesting. Communication with families is limited and more information would be appreciated.

The care my father received in his 10 years of residence was brilliant, he was always happy there and loved by the staff right up until his death recently. I was always kept well informed about everything. The recent manager had been my father's carer when he first went in St Mary’s in 2010, and she
was a favourite of Dad's and kept him on his toes if he was being awkward. I would like to thank all the staff for everything they did for him right till the end.

I have no major complaints about the care given because my father was happy when I visited him before I moved away from England but I find that my attempts to enquire about my fathers' wellbeing and health are ignored. I have sent numerous emails and received no response at all. I have called and been
told to contact a sister I have no contact details for and they refused to ask her to get in touch with me. So I consider that to be very rude and ignorant, particularly as they are aware of the fact that I am not in touch with the rest of my family and a cousin is actually staff. I have reached a point where I have had to request a police welfare check just to know if he is even alive.

Reply from Sam Armstrong, Regional Manager at St Mary's Care Home

My sister declined quickly this year. I think she has been cared for well considering her condition. She is a shy and introverted person who will not take part in activities but they are available to take advantage of. Generally, I have been very impressed.

My mother has been a resident for one year. I feel happy with the care she receives as due to her dementia she is unable to live independently.
I know that due to her condition, some days are better than others but always feel that she looks well cared for and is treated with kindness by all the staff

My mum has been in St Mary's since October 2018, originally going for 2 weeks respite but has been there ever since. Staff and management are excellent, rooms very well decorated and activities and outings are regularly organised. Mum now calls it "home".

Current Review Score: 7.8 (7.840)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.8 (7.840) out of 10 for St Mary's Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.6 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.271 for St Mary's Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (32 Excellents x 5) + (4 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.271

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.569 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Mary's Care Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 47 registered maximum number of service users is 9.4. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.4 = 0.319

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
