My husband has had the best care in Berwick Grange.
The carers are wonderful people and work so hard to make sure everyone is comfortable and well looked after.
They know each resident well and will approach them knowing how they will usually react in each circumstance and are, therefore, prepared
for difficult behaviour.
The home is well led and all the staff know the relatives well and will help in any way they can.
Advice is offered and given whenever appropriate.

My father moved into Berwick Grange in July 2024 and we have been more than happy with his care. The staff are what makes this home. They genuinely care for the residents. They take them out on trips and on individual walks (or wheelchair) onto The Stray regularly. The secure outdoor area is pleasant
and laid out so that residents can easily do a bit of gardening or sit in the sun/shade. They cook the food on site and it always looks and smells appealing. You are welcome to eat with your relative, if you wish to.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend the home to give you peace of mind that your relative is safe and being cared for - certainly better than we could ever have managed at home.

We are really quite happy with the care my uncle gets at Berwick Grange. The staff are all great and when we attended the "Christmas party" recently, they pulled out all the stops and the residents, staff and visitors all had an excellent time.
Back to reality, I think the staff are amazing as the
job they do must prove difficult at times but despite the difficulties, they always manage to smile and have a few words with us when we visit. My uncle has definitely improved since he became a resident at Berwick Grange and he likes all the staff there but he does have a favourite and it shows in her demeanour.
The manager at Berwick Grange is very approachable and I am sure he would be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have. All in all, a caring and professional approach to services offered here.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. All the feedback we receive is useful, as it helps us to maintain and improve our standards of care based on residents' and visitors' views. Your kind words are appreciated and I am pleased to know that you have had a positive experience of our home. As well as a confirmation for myself and the team that we are meeting your uncle's needs, the review will help other people looking for a care home and considering Berwick Grange as one of their choices.

My sister has been a resident for about twelve years. She suffers from dementia. In all that time she has been looked after very well. Always clean - always attended to when she has needed something. In that time, she has had a few falls and broken hips. Each time I have made sure she returned to Berwick
Grange as soon as possible. The doctors believe she is reaching the end of her life but I have asked that if possible she can spend her last days at Berwick where she is known and loved rather than a hospice or hospital. This has been agreed. Obviously, in that twelve years there have been many changes but my sister has always been the benefit of the best care - and that continues now. I am so grateful that she is so well-loved and looked after. Thank you all at Berwick Grange.

It is reassuring for myself and my colleagues to know that we continue to meet your sister's needs and I am pleased to know that you have had a consistently positive experience of the home throughout her time here. Your review will help other people who may be considering Berwick Grange for themselves or a relative or friend.

I am so pleased with the care my mother is receiving at Berwick Grange. There is a lovely atmosphere in the home: from the minute I walk in to visit staff are welcoming and friendly.
My mother is very happy. She feels safe and very well looked after. I am kept well-informed of her needs and I know
if I have any concerns I will be listened to; I feel in partnership with her care.
Regular visits by the chaplain and music therapy are a great asset to my mother.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff for their care, warmth, cheerfulness and diligence. I would definitely recommend Berwick Grange.

I believe that things have really improved immensely recently. The home has had a lot of staffing issues having to rely on agency staff but this issue is now being resolved with their own staff now being recruited and the new staff are brilliant. Also, a new manager has been put in place and he is also
brilliant. Staff now seem to work as a team and you can see the difference in the residents and the staff. Which for me is comforting, the home itself is purpose-built and has lovely surroundings. The food is excellent the home has a lovely courtyard and garden and I volunteer to help with the upkeep of and looking really good this year. I believe that this home is nearly back to the high standard it had previously and I would recommend it to anyone.

My mum has been a resident (Alzheimer's with nursing care) for over 4 years. I have always found the staff to be very caring and accomodating. The facilities and food are excellent. There has always been a desire to involve relatives as much as possible in the home and to provide a wide range of activities.

My Mum has been at Berwick Grange for five months now. She took a while to settle but once settled I am overall happy with her care. Some of the carers are amazing, very friendly and helpful. I think they are saints to do the job they do. As with most care homes there just aren’t enough of them! The
Activity Coordinators are lovely and do their best to get residents involved in all sorts of activities, plus they run the visits. I get good telephone feedback and updates from the nurses as and when needed. I was particularly impressed with the Music Therapy sessions that my Mum had, both group ones and one to one. The only down side at the moment, apart from restricted visits and Covid-19 is that they don’t have a dedicated permanent home manager. Hopefully this will be rectified soon.

We are confident that my mother is being given the best possible care. She recently had a "significant birthday" and we were delighted to see that the staff had gone out of their way to make it a memorable and happy day for her. Although we were unable to visit in person due to Covid-19 restrictions,
we did see her via Zoom and it was obvious from the smile on her face that she was enjoying all the attention. One of the carers took photographs of her, which were then emailed to us. We couldn't have asked for anything more.

During the lockdown I have not been able to visit my husband and although they rang and said he had got Covid 19 I was not at all worried about his care. He has been so well looked after by all the staff. His medicine, food and general welfare. He has recovered from the virus but he has taken quite
a while to get walking again but with care, the staff have helped and kept me informed of his progress. I am just waiting for lockdown to end so I can go and see him and thank the staff personally but although I can't see him I know he is in good hands.

Reply from Phoebe Rathmell, Administration Manager at Berwick Grange

We’re so thankful your husband is recovering well and we do appreciate that it must have been difficult for you not to be able to visit him. Thank you for trusting us with his care, it means a lot to know that you feel he is being well cared for here.

All staff at Berwick Grange have shown 100% professional and personal commitment since the outbreak of covid-19. This commitment and expertise was clear prior to the pandemic but has been underlined by the necessary increase in procedures which staff must adhere to and the inevitable problems arising
from implementing them.
I have not come into contact with any member of staff who does not understand the complexities of caring for those living with dementia and all have exhibited those skills.
My Mum has settled so well into a scenario that she has not wished to be in and that is a testimonial to the skills of the staff. She is safe, well, content and stable with thanks to all at Berwick Grange.

Ever since her first day at Berwick Grange two years ago, my mother has always been treated with such respect, kindness and care. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone. The staff are all great - I have never come across anyone in any role who hasn’t been friendly, kind and helpful. Even though
these difficult times with Covid, every member of staff has ensured that care for all the residents has been of the utmost importance.
We are lucky that Mum is there, and I believe that she would agree.

I have always found the staff to be friendly, kind and welcoming and the operational process and practices in the home, transparent and open. I have been impressed with how staff engage with and assist residents, even when those efforts are not appreciated by the resident. This can be a very difficult
job, it involves hard work and stamina; it is often invisible to the outside world and is undervalued as a result. Those working at Berwick Grange, rise above these obstacles and show a high level of commitment and professionalism. I would like to take this opportunity to praise the care provided by all staff at Berwick Grange and to assure them that although they may have felt abandoned by some of the outside world in recent months, they have been in the thoughts of those relying on them to look after our family members. I am happy to recommend Berwick Grange.

As a person with very aggressive dementia, my husband has settled in fairly well - even though his speech and understanding is rubbish, all the staff have shown patience and care when helping hime and have made him feel at home. He really enjoys the music therapy and 'singing' hymns.

Dad has been at Berwick Grange for about two months. The care he has received has been wonderful. His dementia can change literally from day to day but the team recognise this and adopt his care needs accordingly.
As dad was ill one Sunday I spent the whole day with him. It made me realise how all
the staff work so hard and their love and kindness towards their residents is wonderful.
I feel more guidance is needed for the agency staff as I saw one lad sit in the lounge for one and a half hours doing nothing but reading the paper and watching television!

I have been impressed with the manner in which the carers look after the people in their care. They do not assume they can do as they like but treat each individual with care and respect. Their manner is firm but courteous and they ensure that each person is helped as far as it is in their ability to
do so.

My mother was at Berwick Grange for 7 years and she always got the best care. I know most of the staff and more importantly, they all knew my mother, not always the case in some homes.
When my mother died the staff were all kind and considerate and made sure mum had a peaceful end.

I am pleased that my husband is at Berwick Grange. I find he is clean, appropriately dressed and seems comfortable. The staff treat him as an individual with particular needs, are kind and extremely patient. The activities provided are fewer than they were, that is a pity. But he, himself, would no
longer benefit from those he did before his Alzheimers disease worsened.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.038)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.038) out of 10 for Berwick Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.861 for Berwick Grange is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (10 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.861

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.177 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Berwick Grange is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.577

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
