Southlands offers both residential and nursing care including support for those living with Parkinson’s. The home also offers short stays for recovery and respite, tailored to suit the individual, as well as a day care service available to the local community which includes meals and activities for the day.

Southlands dates from 1870 and was formally one of Harrogate’s premier hotels. It still has much of its charm and combines homely qualities with modern care technology. Occupants enjoy having their own ballroom and traditional bar, as well as ensuite rooms.

You’ll find Southlands in the popular spa town of Harrogate, surrounded by winning landscaped gardens and close to the local shops, with the train station only a short 10-minute walk away.

Yorkshire traditions are embraced in the food menu, which includes homemade cakes and speciality teas and coffees. The chef takes a personal approach to diet, and meals are catered to individual tastes. There are always cold snacks and alternatives available throughout the day.

There’s a real sense of community at the home. The staff work to discover what residents enjoy doing and the home's social calendar is organised around those interests. Visiting musicians and choirs are examples of some of the activities residents can experience, alongside arts and crafts, sherry mornings, croquet and themed events such as ‘messy play’ with the local nursery, coffee morning or lunch clubs.

The care that was given to my mother-in-law was wonderful, they did everything thing possible to look after her, nothing was to much trouble, and even when things got difficult with Covid-19 they still did whatever they could to enable us to spend time with her before she passed away.

My brother arrived in April 2019 and since then we have peace of mind that he is safe and well looked after. Staff are professional, friendly and caring. He has a nice bright ensuite room which is cleaned regularly. Good variety of activities incl visiting singers and choirs and my brother is always
encouraged to join in. Afternoon tea served in the ballroom is always a treat. Pretty garden at the back where residents can sit weather permitting. Food is good and catering staff try their best to accommodate dietary requirements.

We had to find a home for Mum as she required 24-hour care, it was a very hard thing to do but we never regretted choosing Southlands. They were so friendly and cared for Mum so well. They were also very good to us and especially so in the last few weeks and months with the virus preventing us from
visiting. They kept us informed and set up FaceTime and video calls. We could also go in and see Mum on the day she passed away. Forever grateful for their kindness.

During these COVID-19 times when we can not visit in person, the team at Southlands have been proactive in giving updates and personalised message/photos about my mum to our family. They have enabled us to have social media style chats with her on a regular basis which has helped us to stay connected
and has been a source of comfort.
Mum has been here over 7 years and has been content (but would rather be in her own home the way it used to be!)
The overall atmosphere at Southlands is one of a well-kept, aesthetically pleasing home with a variety of communal rooms for residents to socialise or be quiet in.
The staff are friendly and caring and build relationships with the residents. There are monthly meetings to receive updates and make suggestions.
Residents are stimulated with activities and physiotherapy and a hairdresser is available. Family and friends are always made to feel welcome. All of this has been consistent in the many years Mum has been there.

The welfare manager has gone above and beyond her call of duty to enrich the care of Mum. She initiated video calling on Mothering Sunday during the COVID-19 lockdown, and this vital form of communication is still available to all families of residents today.
The care staff have all endured the COVID-19
situation, with a smile on their faces and a happy word or two on their lips.
Mum has had the dreaded COVID-19 virus, which must have been scary for her, but was made bearable by the loving care she received from caring staff at Southlands and she endured the fourteen days of total isolation.
The staff contact us and they also help Mum to make phone calls, now that she is weakened by the effects of the virus, and we appreciate it so much.

I have experienced stays in about four care homes for my wife. This one is by far the best, with the residents allowed to mix the dementia residents with the other residents is a big plus. The food is good and the environment very pleasant with access to a big garden and a large assembly hall. Entertainment
is good especially, covering a fair amount of the time residents experience every day.

We are always welcomed into Southlands each time we visit my stepfather. He has been in the care home since April 2019 and is very happy there. He has put on a good amount of weight over the months which proves what the food is like, it's superb. We have had lunches too, very tasty. The activities are
really good and varied although my stepdad prefers to stay in his room. The staff have tried to engage him but to no avail.

All staff are always attentive, kind and very welcoming when we visit. We as family members are made to feel part of the Southlands family. A charity fundraiser arranged by the staff took the form of a Christmas Market - it was exceptionally well organised and there was lots of effort evident in the
presentation of the stalls. I won a raffle prize voucher entitling me to a free 2 hour home cleaning session, donated by a lovely lady, very kind. She carried out the clean for my parents last week and they were very grateful for her efforts, her cheery personality added extra pleasure to their day. Her kindness was very much appreciated. Friends who have visited Southlands with me, are very impressed by everyone working hard to create a lovely home from home environment. Very impressive.

At a very anxious time and under pressure to find a home for my mum-in-law, we went to Southlands. It was tea time, but we received a warm welcome and after a chat, much needed cuppa and look around. There was no doubt that the family would be happy with our decision. What a huge relief. All the staff
are excellent and respectful of the residents, very caring and thoughtful too, with cheerful greetings to visitors and time to explain medication/treatments etc. The home is kept beautifully clean and the neat gardens enhance the overall environment. A huge thank you to all for everything you did for Granny and our family.

My mother as in Southlands for four months receiving palliative care. She was bed-bound for the whole time. The care she received was fantastic, treated with care and dignity at all times. Communication with staff was good at all times.

My father was at Southlands briefly between his first and final days in hospital. The family could not have wanted a better care home for him. He was admitted quickly and efficiently, and we were well briefed about the care regime. The individual and common rooms are bright, comfortable and well maintained.
Staffing
levels are good and everyone we met was friendly, helpful, thoroughly professional and respectful towards the residents. There is a very good programme of activities and my father was actively encouraged to take part. The food was sufficient, sufficiently appetising and adapted to his needs.
We were particularly impressed by the watchfulness and thoughtfulness of the staff. They recognised signs of whether my father was at ease (because he could not easily express it) and immediately adjusted his care accordingly.
He was enabled to settle in quickly at a time of considerable confusion and strain for him and this undoubtedly calmed him in his final days.
A key member of staff gave up his Christmas Day's leave to supervise medical care for my father and to arrange for him to go to hospital when he suddenly deteriorated. That is exceptional care.

The moment you walk into Southlands you are aware of the warmth, friendliness and liveliness of the place. It is very well staffed by caring people, most of whom have worked here a long time. The lounges and common areas are light, clean and beautifully kept. The room my mother is in is superb. Cosy,
clean and immaculate. The food is excellent. This place couldn't be bettered. First class.

All the staff are friendly and very welcoming. The care my mum is given is constant and of high quality. The home is clean and there are plenty of activities although my mum isn't ready to fully join in yet the staff are trying to get her to join in more without forcing her to do so. I also like the
fact that the same staff are on duty from day to day. This consistency has helped my mum to settle well into her new surroundings.

Job Title: Clinical Deputy Manager

I started working at Bupa as a care assistant in 2010 whilst I was doing my nursing qualification in the University of Northampton. When I qualified as a Nurse in 2013, I became staff nurse and then progressed to Unit Manager, and now I'm Clinical Deputy Manager.


I first acquired my qualification as a nurse in 2007 after finishing my Bachelor’s Degree in one of the Universities in the Philippines. I eventually worked in hospitals, then decided to come to the UK to explore other options - I've always had an interest in Geriatric Nursing, hence why I chose to work and progress in the care home sector. I enjoy working here as I like working within the Southlands team. Making a difference in someone else’s life is the most fulfilling feeling as a nurse.


I live local to the home, in Harrogate with my 7 year old daughter. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my daughter doing gardening, crafts and watching movies. My family and I like to travel and explore different cultures and foods.
