Lister House is situated in landscaped gardens in the historic North Yorkshire town of Ripon, sometimes known as ‘the gateway to the Dales’. The town is easily accessible by road and public transport. They are surrounded by local beauty spots and stunning scenery, including the Dales.

Spacious and comfortable, Lister House is somewhere the residents can feel at home. There’s a shared bond because each resident has a Service connection. It means there’s a team spirit and a feeling that everyone looks out for each other. Lister House has 60 en-suite bedrooms in their main building, as well as a specialist dementia care wing. Their excellent team of care assistants and nurses provide a genuinely relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They have comfortable lounges, a bar, library and attractive landscaped gardens to relax in.

Camaraderie and social interaction play a big part in the day-to-day life of Lister House. There is an activity co-ordinator who helps residents to pursue their passions and hobbies through a range of regular events, including live music, bingo, quizzes and crafts. They also have an ecumenical Chapel where members of the Ripon Cathedral Chapter celebrate regular services.

This month my wife will have been in the nursing home for 3 years, after severe operations for a rare case of infection on the brain resulting in 2 operations to remove the infected part, It's been a difficult time to recover to the level she is at now thanks to the excellent nursing including the testing
and help to get the increase in her condition. We're not there yet but, we, my family, me and all the staff have worked hard to get her to this much-improved state.

Lister House is the most wonderful place. My dad was resident here in the ground floor nursing unit for about 2 years.
The care, dignity, compassion and love he received over that time was sensational, not just for him but towards myself as I live away and had to stay at Lister to be with him.
I
could go home knowing he was happy. He was always taken to the restaurant for meals, the entertainment, nothing was ever too much trouble.
Dad passed away on 24/12/18. My Lister House family were wonderful both to dad and myself. Nowhere can compare to Lister House.

Lister House cares for my 96 year old uncle on residential status, and formerly cared for his wife (who had advanced dementia) on nursing status, till her recent death. In all the time spent there my Uncle has had only praise for the quality, comprehensiveness and professionalism of every aspect of
their provision. In all our visits, which are never announced, my wife and I have never found anything wanting in their provision of either level of care. Lister House is part of the British Legion charity and direct comparison with commercial care provision, of which we also have experience, is difficult. Given that, this establishment truly offers the gold standard of care and I cannot imagine anywhere else could be better.

Steve Kay

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 2019

I began working in care at the age of 17 as a Nursing Assistant in a rather large Victorian hospital in Middlesbrough. At the age of 24, I successfully completed training as a qualified nurse. During the following years, I progressed from Staff Nurse to Charge Nurse, Community Nurse, and spent several years working with the Armed Forces in the Middle East as a Nurse. I then returned to England and worked for a national social care group as a Clinical Lead, managing an early-onset dementia unit. This later progressed to an Associate Manager role and finally became a Registered Care Home Manager.
It has always been my life's ambition to work in a non-profit organisation/charity sector of care, another was working with the ex-military. My role at the Royal British Legion combines both ambitions, it is often said "Be careful what you wish for" - well, this is certainly not the case at Lister House and the Royal British Legion.
The residents, their families, and the staff are extremely well supported, the levels of staffing and support far surpass the levels that I had become accustomed to working within the commercial sector of care.

I joined the Royal British Legion in 2014, I am the Wellbeing Lead at Lister House. This post is extremely rich in its diversity as I plan the activities for the whole home in collaboration with the Clinical Leads and Laura, one of the Deputy Managers. I also run the Day Care Service "Poppy Fields"; unfortunately this service was suspended during the pandemic, and I am looking forward to it reopening very soon.

I am currently in the process of setting up a music therapy group with our residents, we already have a residents' choir; singing is a passion of mine and I am proud to be a member of the Military Wives Choir.

The team and I are always willing to try new activities and entertainment, the regular meetings that we have support our residents not only to choose the activities but to also organise and run them.
