St Mark’s Court Care Home serves a community that was once dominated by shipbuilding and many of the staff and residents have lived in the area all their lives. This explains why there’s such a warm, communal feeling there. Staff, residents and their families have many shared experiences, which helps staff to build meaningful relationships with residents.

Visitors to St Mark’s Court often remark that it is very homely. This could be down to the warm greeting every visitor receives but it could also be the fact that every bedroom is different, as residents are encouraged to give their room an individual feel.

Residents at St Mark’s Court are encouraged to be busy and active, and they are helped in this by the energetic and creative activities co-ordinator, who supports staff and also has strong links with the local community.

The Salvation Army holds a weekly lunch club. A dance teacher comes once a week, as well as an artist. Students from the local college also do sessions on memory with residents and help them to create a story which they can write down and retell to the others.

St Mark’s Court takes part in ‘HenPower’, a project that creatively ‘hengages’ older people in arts activities and hen-keeping to promote health and wellbeing. Residents enjoy relaxing with the hens, which they may put on their knee, place their hand on them to settle them and then just sit quietly.

In general, residents get involved in a host of activities around the home, from laying tables to the gardening club.

Dad went into St Marks Court for 2 weeks respite in March 2024 and I was more than happy with the standard of care given. He then went back home and subsequently had a fall which required 2 weeks hospital admission. It was decided on discharge that he needed a period of assessment, and I was asked if
I had a preferred care home in mind for him. I asked if he could back to St Marks because of his previous positive experience there. Following 6 weeks assessment it was agreed that he should remain there permanently. I had no reservations about this as he has thrived there health-wise and seems content and happy. He enjoys the food, the company, the social activities arranged for the residents and the care from the friendly, always happy to help, professional staff.

My father-in-law was in here for 2 weeks for palliative care, I would like to thank all the nursing staff and carers. The love, care, compassion and support from all the staff was exceptional. They go above and beyond to help all residents in this home, I would highly recommend it to anyone! They deserve

My dad transferred to St Marks and was here for a year and he was on the residential floor then went on nursing, he was happy but then was unhappy.
So as a family, we decided to take him out and he is now in a new care home. He is really happy now.

Very prompt and efficient move-in process and changing room to be more comfortable and near the nurses station. Good communication from nursing staff with health updates. Staff are positive and engaging. Would like more receptiveness to sensor mat alarms, but understand pressure on staffing, plus clothes
missing during laundry. But overall, our family have been very grateful of the level of care and respect offered to our family members and we would recommend St Marks to others!

We had to come to this home for respite as our roof blew off in the heavy wind and the home got soaked inside with all the rain. And we had nowhere else to go. All the staff welcomed us and looked after us so well.
I can't thank everyone so much for all they have done for us.

At all times I have witnessed the staff treat my father with dignity and care. At times there has been a tense situation and the staff have always managed to control and resolve the situation. The management staff have been very helpful, and when I made any enquiries. All my questions have been answered
fully.

Mam fell and broke her hip in hospital 3 weeks ago. Back to home then back to hospital (breathing problem), returned back to home for palliative care. Passed away 3rd January.

We transferred Dad to St Marks from the hospital to receive palliative care.
The staff at St Marks cared for my dad as if he were their family. Dad felt safe and happy to be in a home-from-home environment, and his death was calm, comfortable and ultimately peaceful.

After almost one year of care, we removed my father to another residential home. St Marks were unable to maintain and ultimately provide the basic level of care needed. Staff attrition led to increased reliance on agency staff, subsequently, levels of care declined to a level which justified multiple
complaints. Six months on and no improvements and care continued to decline.
The food provided was generally unhealthy and lacked variation. St Marks left my father unkept, and unshaven, with hair not combed, and wearing other people’s ill-fitting clothes became too much for the family.
Safeguarding issues were the last straw and my father was removed from the home within a week.
I’d strongly recommend considering alternative residential care.

Very friendly approach. On the welcome of my mam, staff, manager and depty were very nice, caring and supportive towards me and my mam. Good size rooms, food very good standard and loads of activities too. I would definitely recommend a stay at st Marks.

We have recently moved my step-mum from another care home to St Mark's. My 1st visit to check the place out was brilliant - as soon as I walked in the door, I knew this was the place for my step-mum. The manageress was very welcoming and friendly, with outstanding assurances my step-mum would be very
welcomed and looked after here.
Once my step-mum arrived, she was settled within the day; she is actually looking so much better prior to the previous place - she is in excellent hands! The staff, from the carers to the nurses and management are all brilliant.
St Mark's also offers daily activities from animal visits to singers etc, family are well informed, and a calendar is listed with all the activities, etc.
I honestly can't fault the place; I know I can leave my step-mum after a visit without being traumatised or crying on my journey home.

Dad settled in very well and is well looked after by the staff. If the family has any issues or worries about anything, we discuss any concerns with the manager and are always happy with the outcome. The manager is very approachable and understanding.
