My experience during September 2024 doesn't differ from my experience since my mum moved into Woodley Hall some 14 months ago. I visit several times a week and see nothing but my mum and other residents being treated with the utmost care and respect. Both management and staff are very friendly and are
always more than happy to help with any issues or questions. I may have and are quick to get in touch if they feel there is anything I need to know. It is a small home but this gives it a more personal feel, there is a lot of laughter and a lot of staff have worked there for a number of years which helps too. More like a 'Home from home'. I couldn't ask for more.

My father-in-law has had 4 periods of respite care in Woodley Hall. It's been really beneficial to him and the family. The staff have made every effort to get to know our relative and have a good understanding of his needs. They have consistently treated him with care and respect.

My mam has been a resident at Woodley Hall for almost six years. I am currently happy with her care. There have been a few ups and downs over the years, this, in part, is because until you experience Alzheimer's, you are unaware of the change your loved one will go through. There have been two members
of staff who I have been unhappy with, and I have spoken directly to management. I could not care for my mam, and I am grateful that the staff can do that for me and my mam.

My wife has been a resident at Woodley Hall since May 2019. On admission, her Alzheimer's Disease was moderate. She was active, able to engage in conversation, take part in activities and resistant to personal care. The perseverance and good care that the staff showed made a big difference in her
quality of life. She settled in. Covid restrictions reduced - and for a time stopped - my visits. However, knowing that she was safe, well cared for and loved helped me to deal with this.
Her disease has progressed during her residence and she now says little, sleeps a lot and has little meaningful engagement. This has not altered the home's approach to treating her with dignity, promoting independence and practising personalised care. Over the last 5.5 years, there have inevitably been a few minor issues but these have been dealt with promptly and to my satisfaction. This is due in large part to the good relationship that I have formed with the manager and staff.

We have had to take the drastic step of removing our 91-year-old dad from Woodley Hall. He has dementia so the last thing we wanted to do was to go through the upheaval of transferring him to another home. The home is nicely appointed and newly decorated but the care standards fell very short of our
expectations.
1. Basic care - dad was often found in an unkempt state.
2. Communication with senior staff even basic information was not relayed to the family.
3. Issues involving safeguarding. We have attempted to address these issues with senior management and the company but have had to escalate all the issues further.
We found some members of staff to be approachable and kind but others lacked any kind of empathy and understanding. It is with regret that we cannot recommend Woodley Hall.

Reply from Steve Smith, Operations Manager at Woodley Hall

We are very disappointed that we were unable to meet the expectations of the reviewer however every effort was made to discuss the issues raised with the reviewer. The 91 year old had lived in the home for a number of years without any previous issues being formally raised and we are sorry they have now left. The reviewer recently made a complaint and this was investigated and responded to formally, and a meeting arranged to discuss any areas of concern. Staff have always tried to communicate but the reviewer tended to get aggressive on some occasions and therefore staff had to distance themselves on some occasions. Following the meeting it was agreed to meet again to gauge progress. Unfortunately the reviewer removed their relative before this follow up meeting could occur. We strive to provide the best care and support consistently and always with the best intentions and this is the first time we have ever had a resident removed for unsatisfactory care.

My elderly mother was in Woodley Care home for 6 months, initially for 2 weeks respite, but as she settled well and her health improved, she remained until she died.
Woodley has changed my opinion of a care home, the staff showed nothing but respect for my mother and always treated her with dignity.
Her well-being was paramount, and medical assistance was called for immediately it was required.
The meals were of excellent quality and variety.
Weekly activities were planned from manicure to singers, hairdressing was available, opticians and chiropodist.
Every time we visited the home was clean, and Mam's room was always clean and tidy.
Nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff, even though the residents could have special needs.

Every staff member did their job with a smile on their face, laughing and singing with the residents, it was a big happy family.

Although my review is from July when I visited my mum, I live in Belgium and phone my mum every couple of weeks. The staff are always extremely pleasant and friendly when I phone and they always bring my mum to the phone when she is awake. My father visits 2 or 3 times a week and the staff are always
very helpful to him and it is of great relief to us that we feel my mum is getting such excellent care 24 hours a day. She has settled in very well since her move from Wylam and she likes the staff and food.

Woodley Hall provides a family atmosphere. The size is perfect for the needs of my mother. The staff are brilliant, very caring, professional and reliable. As a relative I am able to visit at anytime, feel very welcome and confident that any issues with care would be dealt with in a confidential manor.

It is a small and friendly care home. The staff are particularly nice, very caring and approachable. As soon as you ask something (e.g mam needs to go to the toilet or wants a glass of milk) they oblige immediately. The home is always very clean and does not smell in any way.

Woodley Hall care home is very welcoming both for residents and visitors. The caring staff are the essence of the home, they treat the residents as if they were part of their own family, whilst still maintaining a respectful, professional approach. I can't thank them enough for the way in which they
have cared for, supported and helped my mother to settle in and regard Woodley Hall as her home. She now feels secure, less anxious and is being very well cared for. This has given me and the rest of the family huge peace of mind after a very stressful time.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.689)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.689) out of 10 for Woodley Hall is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.362 for Woodley Hall is calculated as follows: ( (23 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 47 Ratings = 4.362

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.327 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Woodley Hall is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 21 registered maximum number of service users is 4.2. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.2 = 0.952

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
