  • The Evergreens Care Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne
The Evergreens Care Centre is a recently refurbished, medium-sized, 43-bedded Care Home, located in the quiet residential area of Forest Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The ground floor, named by the residents at The Cypress Suite, has 17 bedrooms. It is senior carer-led and is dedicated to supporting those with residential care needs.

The first floor, named by the residents as Redwood, has 26 bedrooms. It is nurse-led and is dedicated to supporting those with both nursing and residential care needs.

The home delivers high standards of person-centred care for all residents and prides on working in partnership with residents and their families to ensure that life at The Evergreens is tailored to meet and wishes of the individual.

In March 2019, the CQC inspected The Evergreens and found the service to be Good in all areas.

Each room has en-suite facilities and the home has a number of communal rooms, including an activities room/salon, and a quiet room.

The large gardens offer ample outside space with seating areas for residents and families to enjoy during the summer months, or indeed at any time.

An activities coordinator is dedicated to the social engagement and personal fulfilment of the residents. There is a variety of social activity opportunities on both an individual and group level, and have a mini bus, which enables residents to get out and about and enjoy life outside of the care home environment.

My mother came here in March 2021 after being diagnosed with a combination of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. She was confused at first, had numerous falls and two lengthy hospital stays prior to coming in. It was a very difficult decision to move her into a care home, made especially difficult by
Covid-19, but her safety was the most important thing to her family. I researched every care home in the area before deciding on Evergreens as she is self-funded. All of the staff made the transition as smooth as possible, they genuinely care about the residents. I have had many conversations with the wonderful staff who have made me feel completely at ease, reassuring me that my mother is now safe and well cared for, even sending me photos of her actually smiling, something she hasn’t done a lot of lately. We can have two visits a week at the moment, which are very well organised, involving Covid tests and PPE. Can’t wait for the Government to ease the restrictions so more of her family can visit!

When our aunt entered the home, we were concerned as she had always been very independent, and we worried she would become lethargic and have a lack of interest. #Well, we worried needlessly; the staff are so kind and caring, supporting our aunt to be as independent as she was able to be. She has bloomed
in their care - no falls (many at home!). And she loves the carers and activity worker. She has made a circle of friends and is looking better than she has in years! She always sings the praises of the staff, as do I.
Staff always contact us if necessary, and we feel very reassured she is getting the best care possible. We are very thankful!

My wife was transferred from the hospital to Evergreen in early February 2021. Naturally, I and the whole family were reticent about her welfare going into a care home we had no knowledge of. From day one, we need not of worried, the staff and associated workers couldn't have been more helpful and caring;
you could tell from their body language and their proficiency that she was going to be well looked after. Nothing is too much, from reception to the paramedic nurse to the wonderful carers; they are a joy to behold. My wife unfortunately has advanced Alzheimers, I have been caring for her for approximately 9-years, and was convinced she was better off at home. Although life was tough, she is doubly incontinent, sometimes refuses to eat and drink, cannot converse etc, I still thought I could handle her condition. It was the staff at Evergreen with their tenderness, genuine feelings that have totally convinced me.

My mother-in-law is so happy here. She has dementia with Lewy bodies and when she arrived at Evergreens in July last year she was very confused and unresponsive, eating only crisps and just sleeping. The change in her now is amazing. She laughs, sings and chatters all day and has even started eating
the lovely home-cooked meals provided. All the staff are so friendly and whenever we visit someone always pops in to let us know how my mother-in-law is doing, which due to her illness she is unable to communicate herself. Her room is always spotless, her clothes laundered and she is always tidy and clean. A hairdresser comes every week and we pay for her to get her hair done. The carers often paint her nails to cheer her up. My mother-in-law is self-funding but I never see any difference in any care provided to any other resident and as a family, we are so relieved that the care our loved one is receiving is so good and consistent, which in a previous home was not the case.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review. To hear such positive feedback makes the team feel really proud and serves as a great reminder of why we do what we do. To make a positive difference in people's lives is everything to us and is what we strive for continuously. Having your mam here with us is an absolute privilege and she is loved dearly by all the team. I'll be sure to share your kind words with the team. Thank you.

My mother is currently a resident at Evergreens and I’m delighted with the care she receives and cannot recommend the home highly enough.
Whenever I visit my mother I get a real sense of cheerfulness and happiness within the home. The staff are very caring, friendly and professional and my mother
is treated with dignity and respect.
The bedrooms are a very good size and are clean and comfortable. At mealtimes, if I have visited I have noticed they are very nutritious and well presented.
If you are looking to choose a care home for your loved one please don’t hesitate to visit this home and see for yourselves.
Thank you to all of the staff for taking excellent care of my mother and allowing me to go home after a visit knowing that she is safe and being very well looked after.

My mam has been a resident at Evergreens since July this year. She has dementia along with other medical issues and is completely dependant on the staff for all her needs. I cannot speak highly enough of all the staff. Mam is treated with courtesy, kindness and dignity and they contribute greatly to
ensure this difficult time for Mam is made more bearable. Although communication can be difficult for her, I can tell by Mam's response to the staff that she appreciates what they do. The home itself is warm and welcoming and everyone has a smile for you. Mam enjoys the food and her room is clean and cosy. We as a family feel that our mam is receiving excellent care and the staff are supportive to us too. Nothing ever seems to be too much trouble for them.

Thank you

Our mum moved into The Evergreens from an assisted living facility. She has Dementia with Lewi Bodies and is now fully dependent on around the clock care.
She has improved significantly since living at The Evergreens. She is happy there, enjoys her food and is very comfortable. The carers and management
offer such good support and appear to genuinely care for her. We feel confident that she is being well cared for and that she couldn’t be better placed with the condition she has. She enjoys having her hair done and although she’s unable to take part in any activities, there seem to be lots going on. When you walk in, you get a real sense of community. It’s a very happy environment.

I promised the girls I would get around to doing this so better late than never. This wonderful team have taken extremely good care of my aunty and given me and all the family peace of mind that she is in good hands. The girls are always really busy but they are busy with a smile and always have time
for a kind word and nothing is ever too much trouble. It is easy to feel how passionate they are and how much they care about what they are doing.
I have read and heard others describing the home as like a family but I’d describe it more like a beating heart. The job these girls do is difficult and draining and often easy to criticise and fault but no matter how tough it gets, all I’ve ever seen from them is a real heart of gold. On behalf of our aunt and the rest of the family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done and for all you continue to do, day in, day out.

Reply from Dan Shutt, Home Manager at The Evergreens Care Centre

What a lovely review to read. I have no doubt that every one of the team will greatly appreciate your kind words. The team is indeed very busy and not everybody recognises the ongoing effort that our staff make, day in and day out. When people do see how much they try and how much they care, it does make them feel appreciated and we all like to feel that someone appreciates us. Therefore I would like to thank you and express my gratitude that you have taken the time to post such a kind review.

Visiting The Evergreens always makes me feel like I’m visiting my Mother in her own home. The staff are welcoming to me and so caring towards my Mother. She feels well cared for and loves all the staff.
I would recommend the home to anyone looking for Residential or Nursing care for their loved ones.
I can honestly say I don’t worry anymore as I know she is being cared for so well.

My mam recently came into this home for End of Life Care, and the care she received I could not fault. The carers and the nurses went above and beyond my expectations and I felt so at ease when I had to go home and leave her. I could not recommend the home enough and want to thank all of the staff for
making this hard time as gentle as possible.

My auntie was cared for by The Evergreens Care Centre recently and I was amazed by the total dedication of every member of staff that I met.
My aunt was so relaxed and happy which was such a relief to us as a family, she couldn’t praise the staff caring for her enough.
The rooms are immaculate and
at the same time homely.
Well done Evergreens, great staff and facilities. Thank you and keep up the fantastic work.

The staff at The Evergreens made my husband comfortable in the last stages of his life. They offered exceptional care and support for him and always treated him with such dignity. The family were looked after too and the staff made us welcome at any time of the day and night in his last stages of life.
I
could not have chosen a better place for him and I am grateful for all the staff who work so hard to make the Home the lovely place it is.

The care and attention shown to my mother was the very best with compassion and respect.
The key praise goes to all of the staff that work at the home. They were like family to us and couldn't do enough for us as we were a big family and we were allowed to visit my mam at any time and spend our last
days with her. The home will never be forgotten for what they have done for my mam.

My mother went into this home and the staff were lovely. Her room had all just been done out. Unfortunately, she was only there a week before she passed away, but the care she was given was exceptional. The two young carers treated her with care, dignity and respect right to the very end. Thank you
so much for taking great care, our beautiful mam, god bless.

This home has a very welcoming open atmosphere wherein our Mum has been extremely happy and settled, always seeming to feel safe and secure. The new staff truly know Mam's individual needs and preferences, making her feel valued. Under the recently changed management, we consider the home to have improved,
especially the continuity of their care and concern. Mam said recently "I couldn't be in a better place".

My wife’s sister is currently a resident and we are more than happy with the place. The staff are very friendly and my relative is well looked after. I would recommend the home to others looking for their loved ones to be looked after.

My grandma is a resident of Stephenson Court and although I can’t visit regularly due to the distance, I managed a visit recently. I was very pleased to see the work done to the home and noticed the standards of work were high.
My grandma loves living here and all the staff are so kind and caring towards
her. I know the home has had some difficulties in the past but with the changes of decor, management and staff I was more than happy. I was introduced to some new staff faces and was impressed with the lovely atmosphere around the place.
You all deserve a medal and I am most grateful to you all for making my grandma happy and well cared for.

Current Review Score: 8.8 (8.826)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.8 (8.826) out of 10 for The Evergreens Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.528 for The Evergreens Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (40 Excellents x 5) + (30 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.528

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.298 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Evergreens Care Centre is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.6 = 0.698

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
