My mother was a resident mid-Jan - mid-Feb 2022 in the Lodge at Sycamore Care Centre before passing away, and I feel compelled to write about this home, the management and staff who have worked tirelessly throughout this period keeping my mother safe and well. I cannot speak more highly of the staff
and the home, then the empathy they have shown towards my mum and myself, allowing me to bring her favourite ice scream lolly every day, which she loved, and I know I couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you so much with best wishes for the future and God Bless you all.

Mum was admitted after being released from the hospital into the Sycamore care home. She does have dementia, but she knows her surroundings. She gets upset and is difficult to control when she is away from home. When I was told she was being transferred to a care home, I was dreading the worst. She
has been in two previous homes for a similar experience and never settled to the point I have had to go in to settle her down.
But this time, she loves being in there; she thinks the staff are nice, and the meals are good. I honestly cannot believe she is in a care home and she has settled. She is singing, laughing and generally enjoying herself. Well done to all the staff who are looking after her, and a big thank you from me, as it has made my life so much easier as I do not worry, and I know she is in good hands. She will now need full-time care, and I hope she can stay. The home is clean and tidy. If Mum is happy, then that is all that counts. Thank you.

Reply from Gail Merryweather, Home manager at Sycamore Care Centre

We thank you for your kind words and understand it is always a difficult time for anyone moving into a care home setting. The exceptionally dedicated hardworking care staff we employ, work around the clock to provide a high standard of care recognising individuals for who they are. Thank you for taking the time to post this lovely review; it certainly makes a difference knowing we can bring you peace of mind. With regards to you wishing for mum to stay, please speak to a member of management and we can discuss your options.

Sycamore immediately felt like home. All the staff are so friendly and helpful. The rooms are excellent and kept immaculately clean. The food is very good, and the daily menu is available for anyone to see. The activities are excellent and varied. Residents receive super care, and I was always informed
of any concerns regarding my aunt. She was in Sycamore for six years, and everyone became like family. A great home with great people. Thank you to you all.

My sister currently lives at Sycamore Care Centre, and I feel compelled to write about this home, the management and staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, keeping my sister safe and well. I cannot speak more highly of the home and the empathy they have shown towards my sister, who
is bedfast and totally reliant on their care. I know I couldn’t have asked for more. Well done, and thank you.

Our dear brother-in-law was a resident of Sycamore Care Centre. We couldn’t have asked for a better care home for end of life care. He had cancer all through him, which caused him to loose the use of his legs and it also affected his brain. The staff were amazing; they were attentive and caring and
often had a good laugh with him on some of his better days. The home itself was a beautiful, clean, modern building. With every up to date piece of equipment any hospital could wish for. All the food was top quality food. With a fabulous selection on the menu. His room was a lovely little room. The staff had took the trouble to put bird feeders outside each room to encourage the birds and squirrels to be outside the window for him to see. His room had a spacious en-suite, and the room itself was decorated very tastefully and modern with modern fixtures and fittings. The home was impeccably clean. We, as a family, would highly recommend Sycamore to anyone looking for special care

We looked at 8 different care homes in the area while trying to find suitable accommodation for our Dad. Sycamore came highly recommended by various healthcare professionals. On our very first visit, we found out why. We knew we had found the right place for him. The grounds are simply stunning, and
the quality of the environment provided inside is second to none. From our very first contact, we were both welcomed and felt confident that all of the staff had Dads best interests at heart, and we were right. During Dads time at Sycamore, he resided on 3 different units (we are grateful his changing condition did not mean he had to move far). All of the units he lived on were fantastic. Dads care was very much person-centred. He was encouraged to be as independent as possible and supported to live his life to the fullest. He was involved with all decisions and choices, right until the very end. We will be forever grateful to all of the team at Sycamore, and without hesitation, recommend it.

Sycamore Care Centre deserves a five-star rating for the excellent care and attention plus never-ending patience with my late grandmother. The home was recommended to us by a friend and all I can say is that if you are looking for a professional, kind and caring home for your loved one then book here
with confidence, the staff and the manager are outstanding.
Thank you Sycamore Care Centre!

My Mum spent some time in respite care at the home, and from the first contact, we felt confident that she would be well cared for. This is the first time we have put Mum into respite care, and despite COVID-19 concerns, we were reassured that the staff would take extra care, keep her safe and make
her feel relaxed and welcome.
We spoke with her throughout her stay, and it was clear that the staff showed her patience and friendship, which was doubly important as the COVID restrictions meant that she could not have visitors during her stay.
She loved her room and was very happy with the meals served. The staff were always really pleasant and polite whenever we rang and let us know exactly how she was doing. It was so reassuring to know that my mum was so well cared for.
When we collected Mum, as she said her goodbyes, it was clear she had built relationships with the staff, and we’d be very happy to use the home again for any future needs Mum may have.

This was the second time we used the home for respite care.
Like many elderly people with dementia, my mother has some complex needs. Nothing was a problem for the staff. From prior to admission to coming home, we had excellent staff support from the deputy manager, unit manager and all the care
workers. Her needs were very well met. I will absolutely seek any future long term care needs from this home.

My family inspected a number of care homes in Sunderland for an elderly Aunty with Parkinson's and dementia. Sycamore Care Centre easily came out on top. First class facilities, setting/location, obliging management and staff. We couldn't have asked for more in the last two weeks of my Aunty's life.
Her passing was dealt with compassionately. This was a great comfort to my mother especially. A first-class reputation rightly deserved.

My Mother has very recently passed away. She was only at Sycamore for four days after a stay in hospital. I was keen to find a suitable nursing home for my Mother as we knew, as a family, that she may not be with us long. Did I make the right choice?
I can only say that the care my Mother received
in that short space of time was superb!
We can not find fault with one single thing. Her room was lovely and we were able to arrange her own things there.
The care of our Mother was wonderful. Nothing was a problem whatever she needed. They showed care, respect and affection over a short time.
My family stayed for long periods of time to be with her and without asking, our own needs were equally catered for.
Would I recommend Sycamore Care? 100%

When looking for a new home for mam, this was the first one we visited. First impressions were great, clean, no odour and friendly staff. We had others to visit but decided we would not get a better home for mam. We were right, she loves her room and the staff. We're really pleased with our choice.

Our particular unit was almost residential but with all due respect, the process of time, we are all changing as we age. Some are transferred to other units - we have 9 - depending on their health changes. Understandably some pass away. Service users keep changing but we are still in the 'best of health'
unit. Very fortunate not to have any particular health problems - my experience has been second to none - no complaints at all - everything on hand, doctor, dentist, optician, etc.

My family and I were new to the task of choosing a care home for a loved one. We all agree we chose well. It's never going to be perfect or like it was in their own home but we are free to visit at any time, bar mealtimes, which are protected. Staff are open to our suggestions and share information
openly. Any issues or concerns we have are dealt with quickly.

My mother resided here until her recent passing. The staff were so helpful, caring and compassionate, previous to this, my mother was so happy at Sycamore Lodge. She was cared for to a very high standard, her room was immaculately clean, as was my mother. It was never any trouble to the staff anything
that my mother required, staff made you feel comfortable and relaxed. It was a joy to visit, staff are most welcoming and friendly, always keeping myself and family up to date on my mother's health. In the days before my mother sadly passed, we were most aware of how happy and contented she had been throughout her time as a resident at Sycamore Lodge. I would greatly recommend Sycamore Lodge to anyone who is looking for this type of care home.

My mother was in Sycamore Lodge (The Willow) in the latter stages of her life and was treated in the utmost professional and dignified manner and a level of care and compassion which in my personal opinion could not have been bettered anywhere. The concern and level of professionalism shown to my Mam
and myself from all members of staff helped to make a very difficult and emotional period a lot easier. On behalf of myself and family, I would like to say a big thank you (although this does not express enough our warm felt thanks) for the level of care and compassion afforded to my Mam.

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.422)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.422) out of 10 for Sycamore Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.412 for Sycamore Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (79 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (10 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 102 Ratings = 4.412

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.01 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Sycamore Care Centre is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 113 registered maximum number of service users is 22.6. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 22.6 = 0.31

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
