Thornbury provides a clean, well-run care home for people diagnosed with dementia. Staff are largely very caring and work hard to make sure residents are happy, well cared for, safe and active. There is a very wide-ranging and interesting activity timetable and families are also invited and welcomed.
My mother is happy with the food and level of care.

Reply from Samantha Thorpe, Home manager at Thornbury Care Centre

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a lovely review. It sounds like Thornbury is doing an excellent job of providing a supportive and engaging environment for our residents with dementia. The commitment from our staff to ensure happiness and safety is so important, and it's great to hear that your mother is satisfied with both the food and the care she's receiving. The involvement of families and the variety of activities available must really enhance the overall experience for everyone involved. Thank you for sharing your positive insights!

My mam stayed in Thornbury just a short time but during that time I cannot thank the staff enough for the care and attention my mam was given, they are an absolutely professional team who make the time to ensure the residents are cared for in the way we all would want to be cared for, I don't have a
single bad thing to say, only good. The final thing they did after my mam sadly passed away was beautiful, laying a single red rose on her bed, from all the family a massive thank you for caring for our mam.

Reply from Samantha Thorpe, Home manager at Thornbury Care Centre

David, thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are deeply touched to hear that the care and attention our team provided to your mam met your expectations during her stay at Thornbury. It is our mission to ensure that every resident is cared for with the utmost respect and compassion, and knowing that we were able to provide comfort to your mam and your family during such a difficult time is incredibly meaningful to us. The single red rose is a small gesture to honour the memory of your mam and to express our sympathy and support to your family. We are truly grateful for your appreciation and your kind words about our team. Please know that your feedback means a lot to us and serves as a reminder of why we do what we do. On behalf of everyone at Thornbury, thank you for allowing us the privilege of caring for your mam. With heartfelt condolences, home manager and the team.

Received a good welcome when transferred from the hospital and settled in quite soon. The staff were very helpful and cheerful, which certainly aided in my comfort and wellbeing and later discharge. Grateful thanks to everyone, which includes the laundry girls and also the 'building boys'!

From the first day to the last day, my mother-in-law was welcomed into the care home. All the staff were pleasant and caring. The care and support were very good. I was kept up to date on any issues, can't thank them enough. They supported us through her bereavement also.

A very caring, safe and professionally run home.
The staff go over and beyond to ensure the residents' needs are met, this includes getting a daily newspaper on their way into work for my father. Cannot praise this home enough.

Reply from Samantha Thorpe, Home Manager at Thornbury Care Centre

Thank you for the lovely comment Jane. Our staff always strive to go above and beyond, it is nice to know we are making a difference and your father gets to catch up on what is happening in society. I will pass your comments onto the staff.

Throughout the three years that my friend has been a resident in Thornbury, I have found the care to be excellent on all counts - physical, emotional and intellectual. My friend's needs are met with a warm and caring attitude by all staff. Quick to spot any physical ailments and find solutions. Supportive
through all of my friend's moods and difficulties.

Mam joined Thornbury in late November last year. The initial contact from two members of staff to Mam's welcome by all the staff and the ongoing care provided to Mam has been utterly outstanding. The management and all staff are totally dedicated to consistently providing fantastic care at all times,
truly dedicated, committed and displaying high standards. I could not ask for more. Thank you so much.

My grandmother is a resident of this home, at first she was very unsure about going into a home especially during the Covid situation. Her fears were soon diminished as she absolutely loves it in this home. She said the home makes her feel really safe. She enjoys the company and interaction with the
staff and other residents. She is really well looked after and looks much younger since she came to live here! Her room is really nicely decorated and she loves the food. She is entertained with lots of activities. The attention and care given to her is excellent and all of her family are happy that she is being looked after so well by a hard-working bunch of staff. Thank you for being great and caring for my grandma.

This home is well decorated and very clean making it feel relaxed and homely. Some of the staff can be friendly. Blankets are provided for residents however for duvets there appears to be a shortage.

Our sister spent the final weeks of her life here whilst battling cancer. She was very well looked after and was cared for with the utmost respect. Every member of staff we came into contact with were professional, accommodating and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.
Initially, when she left
hospital there was no space at the hospice so was offered a room here. When she looked around she was very impressed with it's "boutique hotel" feel. She immediately felt comfortable and had easy access to the garden. When a bed was made available at the hospice, a week before she passed, she chose to remain at Thornbury, a place where she felt happy, comfortable and, in her own words, "liked it here".
In her short time at the centre, she made good relationships with those staff who looked after and even had good banter with one of the maintenance guys! For all of her family and friends that visited her, this was really important.

Thank you for your care and support to our sister.

I needed to find urgent respite accommodation for Dad when Mum was unexpectedly admitted to hospital. Had not seen the home or met the staff, only read the CQC report. It soon became obvious that he needed a permanent place there. The staff were amazing and cared for him as if he were a member of their
own family. They went above and beyond what we could reasonably have expected of them. He was there for just under 2 months prior to his death at the beginning of September. We were all always treated with the utmost respect and compassion by all we came into contact with, and they did everything possible to keep him comfortable and well cared for right up to the end.

I would recommend Thornbury to anyone who needs to find accommodation for a loved family member. It brought much comfort to my Mum, my sister and I, to know that he was being so well looked after.

Current Review Score: 8.2 (8.166)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.2 (8.166) out of 10 for Thornbury Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.478 for Thornbury Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (25 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 46 Ratings = 4.478

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.688 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Thornbury Care Centre is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.8 = 0.313

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
