Welcome to Barnes Court.

Located in High Barnes close to Barnes Park and the Royal Hospital in Sunderland, Barnes Court is located on Wycliffe Road close to Barnes Junior and Infant School with onsite car parking and offers residential, EMI residential, nursing and young people with disabilities care. For visitors who are not driving take the 2 or 2A Black Cats Bus, 78 Coast and Country or 700 Sunderland Connect to Sunderland Royal and the home is ½ mile walk.

The home is a multi storey, purpose-built building, which has a secure, central garden containing outdoor seating and raised flower beds for green-fingered residents who enjoy gardening.

Inside the home, you will find many amenities on each floor. The ground floor houses their young residents with disabilities and has an activities room with pool table and games console, meeting room, lounge and dining room. The middle floor has two units, a second unit for younger residents and Dementia unit. Both units have their own lounge and dining room.

The third floor is the nursing and general residential floor which has a coffee shop, lounge and dining room. All bedrooms are offered furnished and there are a number of communal bathrooms on each floor.

They have a dedicated activities coordinator on site and residents enjoy activities in and out of the home which includes trips out to the coast, café’s, bowling or cinema, entertainers in the home, crafts, prize bingo, gardening, home baking, domino’s, knit and knatter club and activities for special events. For residents who do enjoy quiet time to themselves there are jigsaws, board games available as well as 1-1 time.

Barnes Court has a 5 star award in Food Hygiene. They believe food is a huge aspect of their care at Barnes Court and residents enjoy a cooked breakfast, choice of lunch and dinner meals, supper and hospitality trolley with drinks and cakes throughout the day.

The overall standard of this home is very good. Compared to many other homes that were viewed in Sunderland - cleanliness is of a very high standard (even compared to some higher quality standard homes - which was a big thing for us as a family). Staff always work hard to keep the building clean and
tidy. Care standards appear very good the majority of the time and some of the care staff really do go above and beyond (although very busy at times as this has been demonstrated when some residents can't be taken outside when they wish and have to wait). Staff are on the whole very approachable and helpful. Activities are available for residents to participate in if they wish. One downside is that residents are not taken anywhere outside of the home, which we were initially told would happen (trips to the pub/ park/ shops). We were also told initially there was a minibus that was used to take residents out - but this has not happened.

We're delighted to hear that you are happy with the standards of care at Barnes Court and your kind comments about our staff - I will be sure to pass these on to the team. With regards to your comment on the lack of trips out, we usually cut back on the number of planned day trips out during the winter months due to the unpredictable weather which can lead to trips being cancelled at last minute which we always want to avoid. We will be incorporating more day trips out into our activities plan as the weather improves & will be asking for residents' suggestions for places to visit. However, because we understand that getting out and about for some fresh air all year round is important to some of our residents, staff do regularly accompany residents for a walk around the local area, such as trips to the local shops.

My review of this home is good value for money. The care of the residents is good. The staff are good and very helpful, they are there to help and support you if you need them. They are there for support and advice when needed.

As a daughter of a resident who has worked in several care homes myself, I have been extremely happy with every aspect of the care home. My mother seems very relaxed and content with her daily routine and has become a well-loved member of the family group. It is not easy putting a loved one in care
but Barnes Court Care Centre has made a difficult heartbreaking situation more bearable.

The home is and has been very good at dealing with the needs of my mother. At times slow to react to certain things but I put a lot of this down to the red tape of the system as a whole. The staff fully appear to want to care for my mother and are very forthcoming and friendly when visiting. I am delighted
at the overall care and patience and honesty of the staff and feel comfortable having my mother at this home. Thank you.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Hi, my name is Sue Clark and I am the Deputy Manager at Barnes Court.


I have worked for the company for almost 10 years, starting as a Care Assistant, progressing to Care Practitioner and then given the opportunity to progress even further with company support to train as a Nursing Associate at Teesside University. After completing the course I graduated in 2022 and continued as a Registered Nursing Associate, then was offered the job as Deputy Manager in January 2024 which I accepted and continue to be in post, enjoying the day to day running of Barnes Court, the challenges and the positive moments which make my career path worthwhile.
