My mum aged 104 years has been a resident of Brierton Lodge for five years. During that time she has been extremely well cared for and always treated with dignity and respect. I can not speak highly enough of the staff who are always very caring to my mum and always helpful to myself. I would have no
hesitation in recommending Brierton Lodge to anyone wanting a loving and safe environment for their loved ones.

Staff at Brierton Lodge are friendly, professional and attentive. The rooms are clean and furnished to a high standard. My Mother-in-Law lost her speech as the result of a stroke, and the staff are able to understand her needs because they know her well and take the time to understand the non-verbal
communication. We have visited at all times of the day and been made to feel welcome.

Staff are excellent ambassadors for the centre. Their professionalism, patience and caring are a credit to the home. No request is ever too much and the team always have/make time to chat and make residents feel comfortable. Rooms are clean, tidy and comfortable. Consideration is always made when meals
are discussed. Support is given when required. It's always a pleasure to visit- my friend always appears comfortable and well cared for.

Wonderful calm home with happy carers often singing in corridors and meals are great. Plenty of one-to-one activity which my Mam prefers.

My mother currently suffers a condition which warrants peg feeding her, although she can eat small amounts of soft food. There isn't much variety in the way of food offered and quite often the residents who can consume food normally are served 1st, meaning that she sometimes misses out on poached fish
such as salmon etc. and has to eat yoghurts or mashed potato instead. She is normally offered deserts or mash and gravy which can become monotonous. I would like to think she has the same choice in the first instance rather than at the end. Other than that, she is comfortable and happy and enjoys the company of nurses and carers.

I get on well with one carer in particular we have a good rapport. I don't like to get up out of bed but look forwards to a daily chat with the activity staff. The kitchen staff cater to my daily needs and make alternative meals for me if I request something not on the menu.
I like the windows open
during the day but like them closed each night. The carers know this and accommodate my needs to make me feel secure.

In general the care home is excellent but though my mother and other residents are well looked after they seem to be fed up of being put in front of the TV each day. My mother always says she is bored, so I think that something like a sing a long or even a game of bingo every now and then would lift
their day.

Okay the time has arrived that you must surrender your loved one to a nursing home, it may be in the best interest of the patient but that does not make it any easier for you, what are your next steps?

A nursing home must be found, you worry about the standard of care, the accessibility, the cleanliness,

the accommodation, all of which cannot be found out by the normal visit to the many varied sections of nursing homes available.

What questions should you ask, the carer to resident ratio, are there qualified staff present that specialise to your loved ones individual needs, are there activities to cater to help alleviate any boredom that could occur.

If you are fortunate to live in the north of England then look to a Bupa to run home in Hartlepool, then this will satisfy all your needs. The staff care and that is one of the most important aspects of ensuring your loved one is well looked after and happy.

Look to the awards posted to show that the home has been granted a high standard that is backed up from a leading care provider.

The home offers unrestricted access 24/7, has visiting pets welcome, enabling your loved ones to keep in touch. Additionally the home has regular visiting shows from pantomimes to singers, all arranged by a full time games organiser.

It is understandable that visiting can be distressing but when you find your loved one happy and integrated the personal stress is reduced.

My wife has been looked after now for over two years and has settled from the day she arrived from hospital saying "what a nice place this is".

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.061)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.061) out of 10 for Brierton Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.571 for Brierton Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (72 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 105 Ratings = 4.571

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.49 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brierton Lodge Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.69

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
