My wife has been in Newlands since December 2017. She has always been treated with kindness and professionalism. Staff work extremely hard under, very often, difficult conditions. I have only ever seen residents treated with respect.

We have found this home to be full of kind, caring professionals who go the extra mile for their residents. It is clean, well kept and up to date. Residents are encouraged to 'personalise' their accommodation with their own things and to help them feel safe and secure. Nursing care is excellent. It
has a happy feel to it and activities are provided for residents on a regular basis. Food is fresh, nutritious and cooked on site - with special requests catered for whenever possible. As they say - 'If a well-known brand did CareHomes...'

In increasingly difficult times in elderly social care, I have nothing but praise for this Barchester Home at Newlands Park, Workington. The dedicated team of nurses and carers have treated my mother (dementia patient) with gentle compassion while affording her the dignity, her 84 years requires. The
EMI ward is light and airy with access to enclosed gardens (safe and pleasant). There are varied activities on a group and individual levels and a mini-bus for excursions. Excellent, approachable management.

My dad has been in the Lakeland Unit in the Newlands Care Centre for 2 years now as we were unable to care for him at home any longer. His condition has deteriorated throughout his stay and staff have really adapted to his needs. Staff and management are quick to address any of our concerns and do everything
they can to maintain my dad's safety, dignity and well-being.


Unfortunately, it is a very difficult job and at times, it is noted more staff are required as they simply cannot keep up. Extra safety equipment would be most helpful eg. up to date hoist - wheelchairs - bed monitor equipment and CCTV: as staff can't be everywhere at once and need to be able to see all the residents at all times to enable them to keep everyone, including themselves, safe.
More recliner chairs are needed and perhaps a few extra hours worked by domestics because the toilet facilities and dining area are constantly being messed up by the residents.


Please note - the staff are very hard working and caring and I could easily name at least 8 members of staff that I would grade as exceptional on the Lakeland Unit - unfortunately they are overworked and underpaid and will be forced to look elsewhere if improvements to help them are not made. Without your loyal caring staff on the Lakeland Unit, I am sorry to say the facilities and the overall standard would be very very poor. The staff are what is keeping it going - so treat them as well as they are treating my dad. Many thanks.

Mother, now a centenarian, who had lived independently until 98, found the initial transition from independence to being part of a cared for environment a shock. However, the staff's attitude to her, made her realise that it was a sensible decision and move, at her then 98 years of age. We as a family
have no doubts that our choice of home was correct nearly 3 years ago and remains so today. The choices in the boxes below indicate our judgement of Newlands. Having not had Mother in any other such home we cannot judge against other establishments but can draw from the experience of occasional visits to other homes over the years. Good selection indicates what we would like to achieve if she was with us, the excellent selections to reflect our views on Newlands. Family and friends who occasionally travel to visit Mother all remark on the excellence of the staff and cleanliness. Value, a motive subject for any family which has to pay, government policy dictates.

The care in this home is outstanding. The residents are given more than expected; support respecting their dignity and nothing is too much for any of the staff, no matter what their role. All residents are treated with respect and everyone goes out of their way to make the families visiting feel welcome.


We are kept well informed of any incidents, updated monthly on reports and changes in every aspect of care. The staff ring and explain any new items that might appear in a report so the family are prepared before it is written and sent out. The family is excellent and valued by us all.

Kim Whelan

Job Title: General Manager

Hello, my name is Kim, and I am the General Manager here at Newlands.


I have worked for Barchester since January 2019. I relocated here to Workington from County Durham. I have been a registered nurse since 1982, and I have worked predominantly in the social sector in nursing and care homes. I have a special interest in working with people who are living with dementia.


Here at Newlands, we endeavour to enhance the lives of all of our residents. We are proud of the care we offer and would be delighted to show you around our home.
