The staff at Red Brick House Care Home strive to keep standards high but they also try to create an informal atmosphere, where residents, visitors and staff can relax. That’s important for everyone.

Red Brick House is located in the village of Prudhoe, about 10 miles west of Newcastle. Staff care for people in a professional, compassionate and welcoming environment, which caters for all the needs of the residents. It offers long-term care, as well as day and respite care for local residents. Nursing staff are trained in specialist cancer, stroke and dementia care. In fact, Red Brick House has the only specialised nursing dementia unit in West Northumberland.

A key factor in the consistently high quality of care at Red Brick House is the minimal staff turnover. There is a highly professional working environment, which is also relaxed and friendly, with plenty of support for staff, so it’s hardly surprising that people enjoy working there and don’t feel the need to move on.

Staff know how important it is for residents to retain their dignity, and that they each have individual needs. They do all they can to keep residents mentally and physically active, arranging regular excursions and encouraging residents who have particular hobbies or interests to continue with them.

Staff are confident that residents at Red Brick House feel safe and well cared for. That’s why, when people want to know what Red Brick House is like, they’re encouraged to talk to the residents, their families and friends.

I have found the atmosphere at Red Brick House to be very welcoming and friendly. The staff are all lovely and treat the residents and their relations with kindness and dignity. The management team are very helpful, professional and deliver a high standard of care. I am also very impressed with the
measures put in place during the pandemic.

Settled in well, well looked after, good staff and food is good. Chef gets the things we like if we ask for it, could do with a bit more at supper time, yoghurts! Good cup of coffee from one of the staff in the morning.

Reply from Lindsay Donohue, Manager at Red Brick House

Thank you Eleanor for your response. I will liaise with the chef to review the supper.

I have only visited my husband three times since his admission last April. Covid has prevented visiting, therefore an accurate review of the Red Brick House is very difficult to do. The staff have always been courteous and helpful and I am sure that my husband is cared for in a kind and respectful way.
He is not able to communicate so I am making an observational report. I would like to see the room decorated and holes in the wall mended effectively. I am going to provide much nicer curtains too. Please contact me as I would like to discuss this with them.

It is good to have a nice room, my food prep is done for me. My shopping is done, my medication is given to me regularly. As a resident, I feel I must try to be independent and I wonder if I get the full medical help the house provides. I could be happier with more input from outside friends, my GP
and the NHS.

My brother is on end of life care and I have found only care and compassion from all at Red Brick House. The only option I cannot comment on is activities.

Dad moved to Red Brick House from another care home and the difference in the level of care is huge. He has gone from regular weekly falls to none! Due to the excellent observation of the staff. Call bells are answered promptly and dignity is maintained at all times. The home is clean and welcoming
and the activity coordinator is inspirational able to engage with all the residents with ease. I would not hesitate to recommend this home.

The main reason for selecting Red Brick House for our mother was the quality of care and throughout her time there she was treated with great care and dignity. All the staff were kind and friendly, not just the nursing staff. Despite the pressures of their busy jobs the staff all had a good relationship
with visiting family members and kept us fully informed of any changes in my mother's condition.

My mother was a resident for nearly 2 and a half years, becoming increasingly frail and confused latterly. Their care was appropriate throughout. She was treated with respect and her dignity maintained throughout. All staff from the manager down were excellent. The rooms were on the small side, but
the care more than compensated for this. Care during her terminal illness was first class.

From the moment I entered the home to visit I was treated very well by staff. Firstly by taking me to see my friend and finding a quiet spot for us to sit. Other residents are treated with the utmost dignity and respect. All members of staff are approachable and helpful.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.196)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.196) out of 10 for Red Brick House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.596 for Red Brick House is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.596

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.6 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Red Brick House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 10 = 0.8

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
